Baby Banana Brush {Giveaway} Closed

Dental Hygiene. Cue daunting music. Oh how I love that amazing feeling after I’ve brushed and brushed and flossed and swished. It’s fantastic! Try telling that to a teething tot. As Baby Cakes’ mom I feel solely responsible for those cuties; I have to make sure those teeth stay that perfect pearly white. I need to brush them! However, when his gums are swollen he’ll chew on anything he can get his hands on (including his hands), but if I try to get his tiny baby tooth brush in his mouth it is a struggle. He would probably carry it around and chew on it, but that is just too scary for me. Thank goodness for Baby Banana Brush; they have found a way to solve these problems!

babaybananabrush

Baby Banana Brush  “designs, manufactures and distributes fun, innovative and, most importantly, safe infant and toddler care products.” They’ve created 100% medical grade silicone products that combine teething and brushing into a totally cute and helpful product! They have 4 teether/ tooth brushes on their market right now. Two of them look like a peeled banana, one is a purple octopus, and the last one is this adorable blue shark called the “Banana Baby Sharky Brush.”

IMG_4371

As soon as I opened it Baby Cakes stuck it right in his mouth and started chomping away! The ‘teeth’ of the shark are actually little bristles that are made of the same silicone as the rest of the body. They’re super soft and help scrub his little teeth while relieving some teething pains all at once. You can also use the brushes to help teach your tot how to brush their teeth as well!

IMG_4379

There are a bunch of cool features about this little “Sharky.” Your toddler can chew on every single part of it. The tail has four finger holes for your tot to hold onto, or if they’re in the mood the fins make a good set of handles too. I think my favorite thing about it is that Baby Cakes can’t gag himself on it. He can get the teether back far enough to reach the area where his molars are bugging him, but not so far that he’ll choke. Not only can Baby Cakes tote this around without me worrying about him falling and hurting himself it’s made the greatest teether to take in the car! I can hook a binki tether to it if I need to, but he’s pretty content on holding onto it for our car rides.

Collage

So what do you think? Do you think your teething tot would love this as much as Baby Cakes?

The winner of this giveaway will receive one Banana Baby Sharky Brush for their own teething tot!

Ingenuity Washable Playard {Review}

Surprise!!

My sweet baby was born just after midnight a couple of weeks ago, which ended up working out perfectly for my husband to stay the night with me since our older boys were already asleep at a friends’ house.  When my husband got home the next day, he called me at the hospital and asked if I knew anything about the brand-new playard that was sitting on our front porch.  I was ECSTATIC to hear this news since I had applied to be part of a review campaign a few weeks earlier but hadn’t heard anything back yet — this was a very happy surprise!!

**Really, though, this is my very last post on Dandy Giveaway.  Being a mom of three young boys is a full-time job.  🙂

We have a pack and play that we bought just over five years ago, and it’s been a trusty piece that we’ve used for just about everything — camping with a young child who is used to sleeping in a crib, watching a friend’s daughter who needs to go down for a nap, staying in a hotel that can’t promise a crib for the room, traveling and staying with family members, the list goes on.  We have loved our pack and play, but I have to admit that it was not in the cleanest condition after so much use.  We were able to clean it pretty well with some great natural cleaners a couple of months ago, but I couldn’t help but think that there must be an easier way to keep a playard clean on a day-to-day basis.

main

“Ingenuity’s Washable Playard is a must-have for every baby.  This is the only playard that zips off completely to go into the washing machine, so every piece of fabric that baby touches can be machine washed to help reduce baby’s exposure to dirt, dust, spills, stains, allergens, germs and more. With a pivoting changing table, mattress, and side storage pockets, you’ll have everything you need at your fingertips. The innovative One Less Step feature lets parents quickly fold the play yard making it easier to transport or store. This playard can roll, so it can move with you from room to room. A neutral color scheme makes it perfect for both baby girls and boys.”

DSCF4412

We have LOVED using the Ingenuity Washable Playard with our youngest!!  Here are some of my favorite things about using this playard over the past two weeks:

I was somewhat concerned that my older boys might (accidentally or intentionally!) pull over the bassinet we had bought, but the Ingenuity Washable Playard is sturdy and would take A GOOD AMOUNT of strength to pull over.

Bassinets have not generally lasted longer than a month or so for our boys who grow incredibly fast — the bassinet insert is just as large as the playard itself, so I can easily see us using this for a couple of months.

My two year old is using our crib as a toddler bed, but I didn’t want to buy another crib — we’re only staying in this house for another couple of months, and I plan to move my two-year-old into a larger bed once we move.  In the meantime, though, we’ll easily be able to use this playard because of its size and durability.

I love having my babies in my room with me for the first several weeks, but I don’t want to bring in extra pieces of furniture.  This playard is the perfect size to fit at the end of our bed while still leaving lots of space (and not feel like a permanent fixture).

I never bought a changing table, thinking that it wasn’t necessary since I could just change them on the bed or on the floor with a changing mat.  This has worked perfectly for us in the past, but this new baby has already peed/pooped on us while changing his diaper more times than we’ve ever had with either of our boys combined!!

And, as mentioned earlier, the playard can be completely cleaned by unzipping covers and running them through the washer and dryer!!  Hallelujah!!  The changing table cover has already been washed, dried, then put back on just in time to be tossed back into the laundry pile.  🙂

DSCF4411

We LOVE the Ingenuity Washable Playard and have been completely satisfied with this product.  I’d highly suggest this item to anyone who is looking for a playard to use for their infant or toddler!

I have a five-year-old in my house!  We just celebrated his birthday last week, and I really can’t believe that he’s grown up so much into such an independent, fun-loving boy.  I’m really excited for this next year and all of the fun things he’ll be learning, and one of the things that popped into my head while we were outside the other day is that he should be losing the training wheels on his bike and learning how to ride a two-wheeler!

kinderfeets

I’m a little nervous to just take those training wheels off and send him on his way, so I was searching for something that could ease the transition and help him feel more confident before sending him into the world of skinned knees and banged-up elbows.  I was ecstatic to come across Kinderfeets, which is actually designed for children ages 2 to 5 years old!  This wooden bike helps children transition to any pedal-powered bicycle at their own comfort level, and they can quickly move their feet from the pedals to the ground as needed.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPEwb28qAFM]

” More than a toy, Kinderfeets is a father’s gift to his son. Disappointed with the push bikes available, Dutch designer Oscar Mulder decided to create his own balance bike for his son, Sebastiaan.  Oscar wanted Sebastiaan to be able to cruise once he became confident enough, so he broke the push bike mold and added footpegs. Knowing kids love to get dirty, he added a removable seat cover that can go in the wash with the rest of the laundry. Other push bikes have inflatable tires that go flat, interrupting the fun. But Kinderfeets’ tires don’t require air. Plus, Kinderfeets’ colorful chalkboard finish provides a reusable canvas for children to exercise their creativity. Older now, Sebastiaan rides a regular bike with ease and confidence – all thanks to the push bike his father designed with him in mind.

We received the red Kinderfeets bike to review, and this product actually arrived just days before my son’s birthday!  It’s always fun to have such a big present to open, and my son also loved assembling the Kinderfeets with Dad as much as he loved riding it!  From the very start, he immediately jumped on and was able to “walk” with the bike to get it started before lifting his feet onto the pedals and coasting down the driveway.  He was just fine when going straight, but it took some time and “getting used to” on turns and when he started to go a little faster than he planned.  It was easy for him to simply put his feet down and stop himself or to catch himself before falling.  His balance on the bike has become so much better over the week, and he’s able coast much further more confidently.

The other part that my son loved was the chalkboard finish — he spent a good part of the afternoon writing on his bike with chalk and decorating it with his name and other fun designs!  I thought this was a great way to personalize his bike without doing anything permanent, and this feature certainly set Kinderfeets apart from other bikes.

Since Kinderfeets is designed for both toddlers and preschoolers, I wondered how my two-year-old would do on the Kinderfeets bike.  I took him outside the other morning (while my five-year-old was at preschool, of course!), and I was surprised by how quickly he took to balancing and moving himself.  The seat was set a little high for him, but he was still able to catch on to the idea of maneuvering himself around using his own feet and then pulling his feet up once he got going.  Once my older son transitions to a two-wheeler bike, I imagine that this Kinderfeets will be quickly taken over by his little brother.  🙂

Growing up, my dad worked a completely consistent schedule and was home by 4:30 p.m. every night, which allowed our family the opportunity to eat dinner together almost every single night.  Even during my high school years when we’d all be running in opposite directions, I think we did a pretty good job of having as many of us at the dinner table as possible, and I can’t remember even one time that any of us ate dinner in our own rooms.  (I do, however, have incredibly fond memories of our Chili’s takeout dinners on Friday nights in front of the TV watching Survivor and The Apprentice!)

My husband’s schedule, while consistent, doesn’t mean that we have the option of eating dinner together every night, but we do try to eat at least one (and usually two!) meals together as a family everyday.  As parents of young boys, though, these meals can be highly exhausting!  Both of my boys are good eaters, but they can get active and it’s rare to have both of them actually sit at the table through the entire meal without a number of reminders.  In fact, just the other day, I mentioned to both of them that I was planning to put seatbelts on their chairs so that they would stay in one place and finish eating!

MylittleSeat

Well, these products from MyLittleSeat are even better than my idea of having seatbelts installed on our chairs — this sling style travel high chair allows for any chair to become a high chair safe enough for young children!  These seats can be used in your own homes, at friends’ houses (whether they have children or not), in restaurants, and on vacation.  They have the cutest designs for their sturdy fabric, and the best part is that fold down into a matching compact travel bag that is just larger than the size of a diaper and wipes container!

“Determined not to “go back to work” as a result of the love affair that comes with having a baby [founder Stephanie Collins] set about finding something creative to do from home-preferably only during nap time.  Being new parents who travel quite often, and overwhelmed with all the additional baggage necessary while traveling with an infant, Stephanie and her husband would often secure their baby to a seat for meals with whatever was on hand (initially using a sarong while in a coffee shop at the airport). With inspiration from her grandmother who used to secure her children to adult chairs using towels, she made multiple trial versions of a compact, fabric, baby sling style harness that secures an infant to an adult chair – and after lots of trials and experimentation, mylittleseat was born!”

 instructions
We have loved to try our MyLittleSeat travel high chair on my two year old (who, admittedly, is on the smaller side but fits comfortably), but I’m very excited to use this next year when we’re in a new country with an infant!  We have lots of travel plans, and this product will work perfectly to safely keep our youngest addition upright and restrained without much inconvenience or prior thinking.

One Dandy reader will win a MyLittleSeat travel high chair, in any design!  Enter below to win!

I remember reading something a couple of years ago about Martha Stewart saying that she married someone who had perfectly straight, white teeth so that her children would also have perfectly straight, white teeth.  Ironically enough, both of my parents fall into that category of having perfectly straight, white teeth (without braces EVER for either of them) and my mom didn’t even have wisdom teeth.  You’d think that the four of us kids would have hit the jackpot when it came to our teeth, right?

Wrong.  Completely wrong.

My brother and sister have both had jaw surgery to correct their bite, and I just recently found out that I’m a good candidate for the same surgery when I went in to check in on getting braces to push back my teeth from years of swallowing incorrectly.  While my other brother hasn’t heard anything about surgery, he has always had a bunch of cavities that need to be drilled and filled at each appointment even though he brushes often and visits the dentist regularly.

When it comes to oral health, I’m just gearing myself up for the worst for my children, but I’m also conscientious about the precautions that I can take when they’re young.  We try to avoid sugary foods and juices, our city water is fluoridated, and we help the boys brush their teeth before going to bed from the time they are young.  It can be difficult, though, to find the right toothbrushes and training toothpastes that appeal to their taste buds without leaving blue streaks all down the front of their pajamas.  I was excited to discover and have the chance to review this line of natural toothpastes from Jack N’ Jill!

main

“Jack N’ Jill is a natural toothpaste for babies, toddlers & children that is safe to swallow. It was first made in Melbourne, Australia in 1949 and it has been [a] family business for more than twenty years.  It continues to be made in Australia and […] Jack N’ Jill is now available in the USA and UK as well.”

blackcurrant_1278414923

We received the Black Currant and Raspberry flavors of Jack N’ Jill toothpaste, and they both are amazing!  Other flavors include strawberry, blueberry, and banana, which are a welcome difference from the other options available in our area.

raspberry_1278414978T

“Jack N’ Jill toothpaste is 100% safe for young children – especially because they have a tendency to swallow it, rather than spit it out! All Jack N’ Jill packaging is designed to be appealing to children and is cute enough that parents won’t mind it sitting on their bathroom vanity. Alongside the toothpaste we have designed and manufactured the first children’s toothbrushes that are made of NON GMO cornstarch, and are therefore biodegradable and recyclable. Did we mention ‘cute’?”

The Christian Mama’s Guide {Giveaway} – CLOSED

I’ll admit it to everyone and anyone — I am a book mom.  I’d been reading parenting books long before I even had kids (due in part to my background in education), but I stocked up during my first pregnancy.  I read everything about pregnancy, labor, delivery, the first year, sleeping, nursing, feeding, anything under the sun related to babies.  When my second son was born, though, I can’t think of one pregnancy/infancy book that I even cracked.  By that point, of course, I was reading everything under the sun related to potty-training, preparing for a new sibling, preschools — I knew how to do the baby thing, but how the heck was I supposed to handle this rambunctious three-year-old??

I had found a couple of great books that I liked for each stage, but I remember thinking how I wished that I could just find an author of a parenting book who had an entire series devoted to parenting.  That way, I wouldn’t have to read everything but could just turn to the book geared for the next stage of life.

529595_483072001746162_88409036_n

Well, Erin MacPherson has solved that problem!  The Christian Mama’s Guide series includes four books that takes a reader from having a baby, baby’s first year, parenting a toddler, and through the first school years.

In her own About section on her blog, MacPherson admits that she isn’t really qualified to guide anyone about anything and then goes on to explain, “My house is a mess, my baby’s high chair is covered in sweet potato grime and I just stuffed an entire load of clean, dry laundry into a laundry basket without folding it.  The last time I attempted a craft with my kids, it ended in a tempera-paint induced meltdown (from me, not my kids).  I’m not particularly organized or style-savvy or discipline-wise.  But, I am a mom.  And a Christian.  And I love to write about life and parenting and God and every place where those three things intersect.”

familyphoto-600x399

Why, then, would these books be so appealing??

These books were delightful to read because they’re clean (not raunchy or filled with too many details), written by a mom (practical applications are invaluable!), and Christian-based.  MacPherson feels like a mom from your playgroup get-togethers who has the best ideas and makes you wonder why you hadn’t thought of something so easy.  She offers lots of encouraging words for moms who are trying to do their best in this special role that can be so difficult.  She gives suggestions and tips that actually work, and her writing has a great voice that makes this series engaging and hard to put down.

The Christian Mama also has website that includes a blog she updates frequently, freebies and resources to print and use by yourself or with friends, and includes information and details about writing a book for budding authors.

And, she’s giving away The Christian Mama’s Guide series to one lucky Dandy reader!

Over the past couple of months, I’ve commented to my husband about how our boys are at just the perfect ages.  I thought that those days would be fleeting since my youngest just turned two years old last week, but they’ve continued for the most part.  It has amazed me over the past few weeks as they’ve sat in the shopping cart while we go grocery shopping (as long as it’s the rocket cart!), eaten out at restaurants with us (for just the right amount of time — not too long!), and have had a great time at the reading fair at the mall (though the Cat in the Hat character might have helped in holding their attentions!).

One of our favorite “new” activities is taking all of the bikes and car toys outside in the driveway to ride in the afternoons/early evenings.  We noticed that some of the older kids in the circle have scooters, though, and the boys were enamored.  They begged to get a scooter, but I was sure that they weren’t going to be old enough.  My four-year-old, maybe, but my two-year-old?  Not a chance.

main

I shouldn’t have spoken so soon, though; after a little research online, I came across the YBIKE website.  “YBIKE prepares youngsters (and their parents) for the fun and challenges of walking independently, pedaling a bike, gliding on a scooter or powering a go-kart. Along the way, kids improve their balance, coordination, gross motor skills and confidence.  YBIKE’s complete line of safe, fun and durable wheels features products that appeal to different age and developmental stages. Our energetic audience includes crawlers and pre-walkers through preschoolers and grade school children.”

PEWI

Yes, you read that correctly — includes crawlers and pre-walkers!  These products are designed for children as young as one year old and are developmentally appropriate and safe for their growing bodies.  The YBIKE Pewi is a kid-powered hybrid “Walking/Buddy” ride-on.  YBIKE Pewi lets toddlers as young as nine months old who are crawling or early walkers have freedom of movement to explore their environment.

balance bike

The Original YBike balance bike prepares toddlers for the fun and challenges of riding a pedal bike by improving balance, coordination, gross motor skills and confidence.  This bike is recommended for ages 2-4.

kicker

The YBIKE Kicker was designed with toddlers in mind.  Perfectly sized for preschoolers ages 2 – 5, YBIKE Kicker’s oversized 9 inch rubber wheels and wide footbed lend stability on all surfaces from smooth driveways to off road backyard riding

extremem

The YBIKE Extreme is perfect for any pre-schooler who’s not quite ready for a pedal bike and is looking for a more advanced ride to improve their balance and coordination.  Forget the training wheels and give the Extreme a try!

And for ages 5 and up, the YBIKE Explorer has back wheel steering and two easy to grip steering handles that make the ride secure and easy to maneuver.  Sturdy puncture proof tires make riding on and off pavement a breeze.  Kids engage their muscles while having fun, using “kid power” on this sleek three-wheeled Go-Kart.

gliderWe received the YBIKE Glider just in time for my son’s two-year-old birthday, and the boys were so excited to have a chance to try out their very own scooter that was just for them!  I was so happy to see how easy it was to assemble — literally two pieces that snapped right together.  Once everything was in place, I was a little anxious to think of my youngest (who measures in the 25-35th percentile for both height and weight) tearing off down the driveway on this scooter, but I shouldn’t have been concerned.  Once they got the hang of it, both boys were able to easily maneuver the YBIKE Glider and stop as needed.

We love this YBIKE Glider, and I’m impressed with the durability of the product as well as the sturdiness of the materials.  It’s a well-made scooter that is perfectly suited for toddlers and preschoolers.  If you’re looking for a new outside toy for your young kids this spring, I would highly recommend taking a look at YBIKE.

When I was going to school for my degree, I took a Theories of Child Development course where we discussed Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development, Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development,  and Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.  I loved the course and the different schools of thought, and one of the theorists’ ideas rang true with me from the beginning:  Maria Montessori.  Montessori’s theory of child development stresses independence, working with materials to construct learning, and creating a prepared environment conducive to that learning.

I loved Montessori’s ideas then, but I have especially been drawn to her theories since having my own children.  I love the materials and “works” that she suggests, and I’ve tried to think of those ideas as I purchase activities and toys for my boys to use.  I’ve discovered some amazing blogs over the past couple of years that give suggestions for implementing these Montessori theories at home, and I’ve loved using them for both of our boys.

When I found the Mama May I shop, I was in heaven!  These handmade learning toys are based on the theories of both Montessori and Waldorf — they are perfect for open-ended play and learning, and the shop has something for all ages.

“Inspired by these little explorers, and her understanding of Montessori and Waldorf methodologies, Jessica Perkins [founder and principal designer] began making all of her creations with the belief that children make sense of their world through sensing their world. After years of making, creating, and gifting her creations to friends and family, Jessica decided to start selling her goodies. Since the launch of Mama May I in 2009, Jessica’s passion for artistic expression through toys has blossomed into a business supported by mama’s and papa’s all over the world.”

Here are a few of my favorites from Mama May I, along with the description for ways the activity can be used for play and learning:

For babies, the Tiny Tickler!  “A great way to introduce parts-of-the-body vocabulary and directions like top, bottom, left, and right all while building a healthy sense of ego and engaging her desire to play.”

For toddlers, the Sensory Color Sorting Playset is a great activity to distinguish between different colors and textures.  It includes wooden coins with the name of each color, ribbon, paper, felt, buttons, rocks, and paint swatches to match to the right color on the mat.  It’s also a great activity for objects you have around the house!

For preschoolers, the Flip Mat!  We received this transportation set from Mama May I, and I LOVE it!  I was so impressed with the quality of the fabric material, and the wooden coins are thick and smooth.  Both of my boys played with this together, and I loved that we could just roll it all up together and stick it in my bag for on-the-go play.  There’s also a farm play mat, a market play mat, and a zoo play mat that caught my eye.

For big kids, the Story Starters is a great learning activity to combine literacy and fun!  “A beautiful collection of hand stamped images inspire the Who. What. When. and Where. While you and your story maker share in the delight of creating the WHY.”

These Make-a-Match wooden coins is one of my absolute favorites, as it is small and portable and can be used by ALL ages.  These are also thick and smooth (like the ones for our play mat), and they can be used for fun open-ended play or to play a matching memory game.

Mama May I is offering two sets of these Make-a-Match wooden coins to TWO Dandy readers!  There are a variety of choices for these sets, to include space (shown above), forest friends, dinosaur, transportation, vegetable, Philadelphia, farm, zoo, space, beach, nature, fruit, and monster!

9781859859315My toddler is crazy for stickers lately!  What toddler isn’t, right?  They’re one of the best sit-still tools I have in the diaper bag.  This delightful storybook of David & Goliath is spot on perfect for any little kid who loves books and stickers.

So you see the white cut out shapes on the front cover?  The entire book is set up in this fashion, with full-color illustrated pictures depicting the well-known story, and white shapes where the stickers are intended to go, so it becomes a sort of shape-matching activity at the same time.  The pictures are rather cute and have a hand-drawn appeal.

I like the way the story was summarized and simplified.  The storyline and dialogue is easy for children to follow along.  I also like the last sentence of the book, encouraging readers to go read the full story themselves in their bible.

Great vivid colors, pleasant character depictions, and high quality stickers!  A key feature is the glossiness of the pages, which allows the stickers to be peeled off and reapplied.  This also adds to the appeal of being more than a one-time-use activity.

There are 12 pages in all, and 4 pages of stickers, and recommended for ages 3 and up.  The size is just right to sit in the lap of a toddler, and the pages can stay open on their own when pressed.

The author, Karen Williamson, is a mother of three, and worked as a London primary school teacher before launching her career as a full-time writer.

I think this is a great activity for church!  I love that my kids can read bible stories while they are trying to be still and quiet.

You can purchase the book online HERE for $5.99, which is a totally acceptable price for the value and entertainment it will provide.

*I received this book from Kregel Publications in order the write this review, but all opinions are strictly my own.
