For Christmas last year, I was trying to come up with a quick, fun, inexpensive gift that my four-year-old could give to his (23!) friends at preschool. I, of course, took to Pinterest and found the genius idea of using broken crayons to fill silicone trays and make into new crayons.  I tell you, it was meant to be — I had picked up a silicone tray with 24 Gingerbread men at a yard sale for a quarter, and who in America doesn’t have extra, old crayons that need a new life? Everything was right there in my house, and we had a great time making these funky, mixed-colored crayons for preschool friends.
Since then, I’ve been hooked on this idea, especially for the holidays. I found another silicone tray with hearts for Valentines’ Day and another one with leaves for the fall season and Thanksgiving. The crayons are easy to make and are fun to give or use at home during each holidays, but they also are fun for baking or freezing ice. (Another I’m on the hunt for a shamrock silicone tray at the thrift store tomorrow…
Sillycone Inc. specializes in these amazing silicone trays that have won my heart, and even better they make them in educational letters, numbers, and symbols for extra learning fun.   All Sillycone trays “are FDA-tested and oven safe up to 550°, and freezer safe down to -50°. They cool within minutes of being removed from the oven, and cook with a perfect evenness every time. They are dishwasher safe, and do not retain odors or flavors even after prolonged and heavy use. Best of all, they fold easily for compact storage in a crowded kitchen.”
We were shocked the other day to open the package and find all of the numbers, letters, and symbols to try out at our house! We’ve already used the Letter Trays for a fun bath time activity (thanks, again, to Pinterest): food coloring frozen in water to make ice cubes to toss in the bath tub that melt and make colored water.  We love it!

We’re excited to use the Numbers Tray in a couple of weeks for my youngest son’s 2nd birthday (already?) and for my ___ birthday (already??!). :) Sillycone gives great suggestions to use jello, chocolate, or wax for candle burners in any of their trays for an interesting twist.

And, they also offer just ONE STATE in a silicone mold — Ohio!  (#Camille!)
