Mermaid Maternity {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Raise your hand if you cringe when I say the words “maternity swim suit.” It doesn’t matter how big or small you are, or how “tiny” or “wow, are you  having twins?” your stomach is, most maternity swim suits are just horrible! They’re unflattering, uncomfortable, unfortunate, and you inevitably end up feeling dumpy and large. Well, ladies, rejoice! I have found a company that will forever put that stereotype out of your minds: Mermaid Maternity!

logo

Mermaid Maternity is a swimwear company dedicated to offering well-made, supportive, super cute maternity swim suits. Believe me when I say I like all of their designs and had a really hard time picking which suit I wanted to review! They don’t have a million to choose from, but that guarantees that they have taken the time to truly perfect the styles and patterns of the suits that they do offer.

suits

Their basic model is this: you pick a top you like, then pick a style of bottoms you like and voila! you have a swim suit. In tops they offer a V-Insert style, a Halter V-Insert style, a Bandeau style and a Wrap-Around Bandeau style. For the tankini top, you can choose from three different patterns or four different solid colors.  The bottoms are all black (a smart, flattering choice, in my opinion) and come in several styles of briefs, shorts, skirts and board shorts. They vary in length of the short as well as length of the maternity panel at the top. They also offer a few Rash Guard tops  and a selection of Plus Size swim choices.

I chose to review the V-Insert Top in Raspberry with the Fold-Over Panel Maternity Swim Shorts, and let me just say I. LOVE. THIS. SUIT!!! First of all, it’s comfortable. The top is supportive and gives me the coverage I need while still feeling like a swim suit. The V-Insert style is flattering and I love the knotted details in the fabric along the shoulders. The adjustable straps can be worn straight down the back (like a bra) or crossed in an X. I like the X because I feel like it gives me that much more support, which I need with this pregnancy chest! The fabric is thick and stretchy and feels like it will last through several more pregnancies (assuming I have any more!). The best part of the suit, however, is the tie on the side. Every Mermaid Maternity suit comes equipped with this drawstring hem to grow with you as your belly expands, and the tie allows it to conform to your shape as well as stay down in the water when you’re swimming (unless you like your top floating up and around you like a skirt underneath your chest…).

drawstring

The bottoms are another favorite part of this suit. They are tight and short enough to look like bathing suit bottoms but not so tight and short that I feel uncomfortable in them. My legs (especially my upper thighs) are definitely not my best feature, and these little shorts allow me to cover them right up! Plus, let me tell you how awesome is it to not have to worry about trimming up around the sides every time I’m going to go swimming…you know what I mean, ladies!

me in suit

I’ve already worn this suit to the pool a few times and to the beach once, and I’ve chased around my two kids and walked miles in the sand in it, and I’ve yet to feel uncomfortable or self-conscious. In fact, I feel great in this suit! I’ve gotten several compliments on it from both friends and my husband, and every time people are amazed at the quality and craftsmanship that have gone into this swim suit. That said, they’re not cheap. The tops run between $60-68 and the bottoms are anywhere from $32-52, depending on the style. DON’T LET THAT DETER YOU! This is one purchase worth spending the big bucks on! Trus me when I say this suit will not fall apart or stretch out after one pregnancy/summer. I fully intend to wear this suit at least twice a week all summer long and still get more use out of it in a few years. Mermaid Maternity’s customer service is superb, so if you order something from their online store and discover you don’t like it, they will work with you to help you find the perfect swim suit for your beautiful, pregnant body. Now go do some shopping! And then enter to win $100 to their online store!

So here’s another thing you should know about me: I’m cheap. Or, to put it nicely, I’m frugal. But however you say it, the truth is I HATE wasting money. And the biggest waste of money in our house right now is on disposable diapers! My 18-month old still poops about 6 times a day and every time I change her diaper I tell her she’s literally pooping on her college education fund. I know that cloth diapers would be a better option both financially and environmentally, but I never had enough money to put down for the initial investment on a ton of diapers (and, let’s be honest, I never had the desire to deal with cloth diapers, either). However, when I learned that they now make reusable swim diapers,  I thought “Here’s something I can handle!”

FINIS, maker of performance swim wear and swim products for adults, also has a great kids line. They make great goggles (at least according to some reviews on their site), swimsuits,  fins, and other water confidence products. How cute would your daughter look learning to swim in this mermaid monofin?!

FINIS also makes awesome reusable Swim Diapers. They come in two patterned options or three solid colors ( pink, lime green, or royal blue).

The sizing goes from 3-6 months (9-15 lbs.) all the way up to a 4T (38-45 lbs.). I chose the Pink Bubble pattern and got a size Large for my (petite) 18-month old. It fits well, maybe even a bit big, so I’d suggest rounding your child’s weight/age down rather than up when choosing your size since you want it to fit snugly against your child’s skin.  In case that made no sense, here’s a sizing chart to help you out:

According to their website, the inside has a soft woven polyester lining and the outside features UPF 50+ to keep UV rays away from sensitive areas. All materials are Phthalates and PVC free, so you don’t have to worry about any weird chemicals affecting your kids. I took my daughter out in the pool and let her play with her water table in the diaper, and both times it seemed to work just fine. It never ballooned up like a normal diaper would, and it stayed in place and kept her protected. It fit great under a bathing suit but could be worn alone with just a rash guard for a top as well. Naturally, the girl who poops 6 times a day never did poop in the diaper when I needed her to, so I don’t know how well it holds in solid waste, but my guess would be it works just fine. I’ve washed it a few times and the colors have stayed and the elastic is still in tact. The best part is the price: $9.99 for a diaper that you can use all summer long! When you consider that a package of disposable swim diapers is around $7-10, and that maybe only lasts you through one month of summer (at least here in Southern California),  that’s a super fantastic deal! And check out how cute this little bum looks in that diaper:

Spring has finally sprung around here and it is about time!

Our tree decided to bloom with its gorgeous white blossoms.  Not sure what kind it is, though.

Guess I’ll have to do some research and get back to you.  😉

As I said it’s great that we are finally in the spring season.

Mere weeks ago (the end of March) we were buried in snow here in St. Louis:

One day it was gorgeous outside.  Temps in the upper 50’s.  Then literally the very next day we had over a foot of snow.

But here we are less than a month later and able to enjoy the outdoors!

The kiddos and I have been having a grand time with the nice weather.  We have been trying to take walks on a daily basis.  Ruby loves to ride in the big red wagon and Banjo loves to run ahead of us.  It has also been fun to get out and see the neighbors and I’m grateful for the wonderful street that we live in.

This gorgeous weather is a reminder that swim suit season is lurking.  In the coming weeks I’ll be sharing with you about some great workout programs.  Perfect for getting in shape for the swim wear.  For now let’s have a look at some of the ‘it’ styles for the summer from some of my favorite lines:

What will I be wearing this summer?  Well, given my latest skin biopsy and subsequent minor surgical procedure scheduled for later this month I won’t be showing much skin.  In fact my doctor recommends that I wear a rash guard from now on.  Maybe this one from Lululemon:

Happy swim suit shopping!

My words of advice:  Wear sunscreen.  Don’t go tanning.  I wish I had known this when I was younger.
