Ultraviolet and Your Eyes: What You Need to Know Right Now

 oeil-enfant

Some tweet about them. Others sport them in their social media photos. Their popularity is easy to understand, for a pair of stylish sunglasses can give almost anyone the great good looks of a rock star.

However, the ability to enhance your physical appeal is only part of their usefulness. If you leave the house without your shades, you could actually live to regret it.

Ultraviolet Rays and You

As bad as sunlight is for the skin, it can do more harm to your eyes. Continued exposure to ultraviolet rays is the verified cause of many vision disorders. The worst of these include:

– Cataract, a clouding of the lens that can lead to eventual blindness.

– Macular degeneration, a progressive loss of central vision.

– Pterygia and pinguecula, two types of unsightly corneal growth that interfere with the eyesight.

– Cancer of the eyelids.

– Snow blindness, a burning of the cornea that sometimes results in permanent visual impairment.

How Sunglass Lenses Can Save the Day

While wearing sunglasses can help prevent these problems, any good they do will depend not on the frames, but on the lenses. The best of these will be:

– Gray, brown or green in color. While yellows and pinks may attract attention, drivers who wear them can have trouble distinguishing the colors of traffic lights.

– Of a medium tint. Lenses that are excessively dark cause the pupil to widen, letting in damaging rays.

– Ground and polished. The poorer optical quality of the stamped and molded lenses found in cheaper glasses can cause excessive visual distortion.

– Polarized. Boaters and drivers in particular appreciate the ability of polarized lenses to filter sunlight that bounces off water and other shiny surfaces. However, polarization can sometimes cause problems for anyone trying to read the display on a cell phone, ATM or dashboard.

Frame Size Matters
Where eye protection is concerned, bigger is always better. While wrap-around frames are best at blocking the sun, those that reach the temples at the sides and the cheekbones at the bottom will serve almost as well.

Finding Complete UV Protection
Glasses that provide poor defense against UV rays deserve to remain on the shelf. The ones you want to buy will:

– Provide 100% UVB and UVA protection.

– Offer UV400 protection to shield against the smallest UV rays.

– Meet ANSI Z80.3-2001, AS/NZS 1067:2003 or EN 1836:2005 blocking standards.

In addition to reading the sticker, it’s important to check the lens material. The best will consist of polycarbonate, a synthetic resin that needs no special coating to provide a complete defense. While less-expensive knockoffs may work when new, any chips or cracks in their coated plastic lenses will quickly weaken their original clout.

The Best of Both Worlds
Not many objects can claim to be both fashion-forward and beneficial to your health. Even fewer have been “friended” on the social media. If your looks and your eyesight mean anything to you, show your sunglasses some respect and let them help stymie those UV rays for good.

The art & design behind fashionable sunglasses today and why they are so popular

The art & design behind fashionable sunglasses today and why they are so popular

When discussing what makes a pair of sunglasses great, we have to begin at the source: the brand that creates them. Heritage is often important, although not mandatory: some sunglasses brands come with a lot of history, while others are just being born from great ideas. What matters is all the work that goes into creating the perfect pair of sunglasses, which includes manufacture, materials, design and promotion. Visit All Brands Glasses to see more exciting brands and styles.

Prada is the first name that comes to mind when thinking of success in fashion. Founded in 1913 as a leathergoods label, Prada came to where it is today in the hands of designer Miuccia Prada, who took over in 1978 and launched the first ready-to-wear line in 1989. Their sunglasses line means one iconic model after the other, as all the collections they’ve launched in recent years have become popular worldwide. An example is the Dixie frame from 2012, which was inspired by vintage cars and Hollywood heroines. You can actually see and feel the inspiration in the frame, with the aerodynamic shape, bold colors and retro design. The sunglasses have since been sported by many celebrities and fashion bloggers (e.g. Katy Perry, Rihanna etc.), only to prove their popularity. Moreover, the ad campaign is filled with optimism and sunlight, making it even more attractive to potential customers.

Another excellent example is Karen Walker. The New Zealand based designer started out in the early 90s, with a budget of only NZ$100. While her clothing line can surely be considered a success, it’s her sunglasses that really leave a mark. Not only are the designs funky and eye-catching, just what the public is looking for these days, but the idea for the campaign was new and original. Walker took to a popular blogger, Ari Seth Cohen, to photograph the collection on “advanced” models. Women featured on his blog, Advanced Style, became sunglasses models, a take that caught on really well. Instead of making it all about the trendiest models of the moment, the focus was shifted on what really matters in this case: the sunglasses. The campaign also supports beauty in all of its shapes and ages, making it more approachable for women worldwide.

In conclusion, it’s never only about design. The product that you sell has to be truly great, and that’s a premise you should start from. Quality, design and marketing strategies all blend together in creating an iconic product that will last through the decades.

Glasses are such fun accessories!  When I was younger and before I actually needed glasses/contacts, I remember buying a pair of frames with clear lenses (zero prescription) so that I could wear them to school and feel fashionable.  Now that I actually do need glasses to see, I have an even greater excuse to get cute ones!  When you think of them as an accessory, you really do need a few pairs!  One black, one brown, one that goes best with your skin tone and hair color, one for fun, one with tinted lenses, etc.  You’re right, this totally adds up, but you don’t have to only shop at your optometrist’s office.  There are other options!  Much more affordable options!

Lenses from Firmoo start at $8!!  Plus they have a 1st Pair Free program, so there’s really no excuse to go pick out several and expand your eyewear collection.

But what about being able to try them on?  Believe me, I get it.  Rest assured, Firmoo has a Virtual Try-On System, where you can upload a picture of your face and virtually try on all the pairs in the store.  And you can take your time, too.  I remember once feeling rushed into a purchase because I had already taken up what I thought was a fair amount of time trying on my favorites, but still hadn’t come to a decision.  Your glasses are a big deal!  They become a big part of your ‘look’!

I really had a hard time narrowing down favorites from all the fantastic frames from Firmoo.  The Virtual Try-On feature really made things easier, since I could get a better idea of just how large these lenses would look on my face.  According to Firmoo, 98% of their customers who use the Virtual Try On tool are satisfied with their glasses pick.  I ultimately went with something a little crazy, and I’m so glad I took that little risk!  These are a square frame tortoise shell pair (#CP8384) and I love their personality!

The variation of browns make this easy to compliment many different shades of dark or light hair.  I also like how the folding arms are a different pattern, so these look like another pair entirely when you look from the side.

Banz is all about protecting kids.  Keeping them safe for sun and more!  In the past I’ve featured Banz sunglasses, Banz Ear Muffs (hearing protection), and more.  I love how this company takes care of me kiddos.  This summer they sent us some UV protection swimwear and it came in such handy.  Sure it’s wonderful for any outdoor setting of water:  pool, lake, slip n slide, etc.  In our case we headed to Lake Powell last month to spend a week on the family’s house boat.  Lots of time in the sun let me tell you!

So…  We went aboard, found a nice beach to play on the entire week, and got into our protective swimwear!  Here’s our little goofball modeling his Banz swimwear:

Have you picked out your favorite yet?  Faded Days sent me two awesome pairs of sunglasses and I am just itching to take them out to the beach!  I really like the feel of these sunglasses.  They are lightweight, but they don’t feel easily breakable.  I love the classic look of a solid color that can be paired with anything.  My favorite feature is the matte finish, instead of a plastic gloss.  All Faded Days sunglasses contain FDA approved impact resistant lenses and UV400 protection.
