Babyganics {Review}

Summer is just around the corner. That means warmer days, pool time and lots of outdoor activities. Who doesn’t want to soak up so much Vitamin D after a long dreary winter? But with your little ones, their skin needs to be treated so much differently then yours does!

Screen Shot 2014-05-08 at 10.33.43 PM

Babyganics, the leading manufacturer of naturally safe and effective products for a “baby-safe world,” would like to introduce you to their new Mineral-Based Sunscreen lotion (50+SPF). Providing broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection that glides on smooth for effortless application, this new offering just in time for summer has a non-chemical, non-whitening formula that absorbs easily to skin, perfect for high exposure areas and targeted protection. Although Babyganics has no PABA, Parabens, nano-particles, Phthalates or fragrances, it is just as effective as a traditional sunscreen.

babyganics1

Pediatrician and dermatologist tested, their mineral-based formula is non-allergenic, tear free, and is the only sunscreen with Babyganics’ exclusive NeoNourish Seed Oil Blend that nurtures and supports baby’s skin. Let’s not forget that this product is also water resistant for up to 80 minutes! Babyganic’s Mineral-Based Sunscreen lotion (50+SPF) retails for $9.99 and is available for purchase at Babies ‘R’ Us, Buy Buy Baby, Target, and online at Diapers.com.

babyganics

I loved the consistency of this sunscreen. It was thick and creamy and had no smells that came when putting it on (no teary eyes, no whining because it’s to strong and smells yucky)  What I love about this product is that it was created by a group of parents. A lot of other parents including their wives were saying how they wanted to protect their child’s skin better. This is where they came up with babyganics. I really like companies who reach out to the community and find out what’s most important to them.

They also offer so many more baby-safe products. Laundry detergent, toothpaste, baby wipes, hand sanitizer. You name it!!! My husband makes fun of me because I literally wash my hands after anything I do (OCD maybe? haha) but I always have to have the best soap in our kitchen so it doesn’t dry out my hands. Babyganics hand sanitizer is amazing and the ingredients are so great for kids! Definitely check out their other baby-safe products and see what you can get your hands on!

So get your babies ready for summer the right way! A cute hat, some fun shades and some Babyganics! After all, don’t we all want “smooth as a baby’s bottom” skin 😉

Disclosure: This product was given to me for free by Cotton Babies (BumGenius) to test and review. Any opinions expressed in this post are my own.

We have been cloth diapering since last August, and I have to say that it has truly been a learning curve. Initially, we started as a way to save money, but it quickly became a way of life for us. I mean, there’s something to be said about living a life of self sustainability, am I right? Also, those late night “Oh no we’re out of diaper” charade was getting a bit old, so we decided to pull the ole plug and go cloth. And we haven’t looked back ever since.

20140326-085043.jpg

Our stash has a mixture of all different diapers, but our favorites are the bumGenius 4.o, so naturally I wanted to shout from the rooftops how much I adore them. Because, that’s what my life has come to. Diaper excitement. Oh the life of a mom.

I’m not going to lie. Building a cloth diaper stash was not cheap. But I learned some super valuable lessons in the process. For instance, that age old lesson “you get what you pay for” really makes sense. I started out buying a ton of diapers that were cheaply made and they really did work for a bit, but I quickly learned that their inner PUL layer (the layer that makes them waterproof) on the inexpensive brands began to wear out and cause leaks and I’m all like ” Houston, We have a problem” because well , wet boys are unhappy boys. And that is  not cool.

So I bucked up and tried the bumGenius 4.0 and immediately I was a changed woman. From the amazing craftsmanship to the  extra wide organic  inserts( that you can stuff to be thinner with just one or thicker with both inserts) and their snap down exteriors that can be sized to fit babies 7-35+ pounds. You can choose to buy the Aplix (Velcro) style or the Snap style. Since my guy is master Houdini when it comes to diaper escape magic, I chose to go with the snap style, as they are harder for little hands to open.  Bottom line: these diapers are meant for heavy duty. Or maybe I should say “Heavy Dooty“.

bumGenius 4.0 Snapped at the smallest fit.

Now I don’t have any experience using cloth diapers on a smaller baby (that review experience is due to arrive in May),  but these diapers did a great job with my one and a half year old, who is a heavy wetter. bumGenius could even handle the over nights! And since they are so well made, they hold up for multiple babies. That means that although the initial price is a bit higher at $17.95 per diaper, they are able to last through multiple children. You really get your moneys worth with the bumGenius 4.0.

Inside view of inserts.

Oh, and the colors! I mean, is there anything cuter than a tiny hine-y in a rainbow assortment of colors? This diaper I reviewed is shown in the color Mirror. It’s the perfect blue-green to brighten up even the stinkiest of days (yes folks I’ll be here all night, rocking these puns). What’s even more amazing is knowing that your baby isn’t sitting around in unnecessary chemicals that can be found in disposable diapers, and that you are saving serious dough. Truly it’s a win-win. Plus it can handle the jumpy excitement of a two year old. I can honestly say that these diapers are legit.

20140326-091538.jpg

The two year old jump jump test. bumGenius passed with flying colors.

bumGenius also makes an array of diapering accessories, such as laundry detergant (which I highly recommend) and neat things like diaper sprayers that attach easily (I did it myself) to the side of your toilet for easy clean up!

If you’re interested in learning more about cloth diapering I urge you to visit their Official Store. Also follow any new updates and check out diaper facts but “liking” the bumGenius Facebook page and “following” bumGenius on Twitter.

I remember a couple summers ago I asked a girlfriend how she got her clothes to smell so fresh. She told me that during the middle of the wash she would poor the softener in. Genius, right? Well, this plan worked out great during the summer when I stayed home all day with my puppy. But now that I am more busy and work a ton, I don’t have time to sit and wait for half way through my wash to poor softener in. So my clothes went back to not having a good smell to it, or they were getting really wrinkly in our dryer because of said busy schedule. Thank goodness for Woolzies Dryer Balls!

woolzieslogo

Woolzies Dryer Balls sent me a box of their product a few weeks ago to try out. I no longer have to sit and wait half way through my wash to get that softener smell. I even can let me clothes sit in the dryer for a bit and they don’t come out wrinkly. Such a relief I’m telling yah!

woolzies2

Woolzies Dryer Balls will cut your drying time down by 25% and help save you money on not having to go and buy liquid softener or dryer sheets. They last up to 1,000 loads. Yep, 1,000 loads!! I am stoked to not have to go back to softener and just stick with my detergent now… for 1,000 loads! 😉

woolzies

So, maybe this is may be a little T.M.I. but I thought I should share this little bit of information with my fellow long-thick-hair women 🙂 I shed like crazy! Like you can find my hair anywhere you go in my house. My dryer is pretty good about catching all my hair in the lint drawer, but my poor husband still finds it in his clothes (oops!) Ever since I started using the Woolzies Dryer Balls, I noticed I was seeing a lot less hair in our laundry. The dryer balls were also catching any of the left over hair that the lint container wasn’t. My husband loves that! (He will be sitting there and pull out a string of hair from his under shirt)

I definitely recommend in investing in a box of Woolzies Dryer Balls. I got the box of 6 and am so glad. Our loads are big and need all the they can get. Definitely check out Woolzies website and hop on board!

Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates {Review}

So I try to stay away from any food tasting reviews because I just know I will gobble it down in .5 seconds and then feel so guilty afterwards. But when Sjaak’s Organic Chocolate contacted me and I did my research, I knew I had to try at least one, or 3 😉

Vegan Chocolates

Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates aims to create the highest quality gourmet organic chocolates possible while participating in fair trade practices and encouraging sustainable agriculture through the use of organic, non-GMO ingredients. It is also the goal of Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates to build a socially responsible, profitable business that can be carried on for generations to come.

They had me sold at gourmet organic chocolates! I am a huge health freak. The only chocolate I will eat is dark chocolate, so when they had Organic Dark Chocolates and Vegan chocolates, I jumped right on board!

.sjaaks

My husband tried the Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter and I was able to devour the Dark Chocolate with Almonds and let me tell you! These candy bars are so delicious! What we loved about them is they were so rich in flavor but didn’t leave that chalky left-over taste to them.

sjaaks2

So, I realized I needed to explain why three truffles are missing from the tray. I came home from work and saw a box on the counter (I had forgotten I was expecting a package from Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates) and I ask my husband what was in the package. He then proceeds to tell me how crazy it is that I ordered a ton of Organic Chocolate that was probably very pricey, so to “punish me” he ate three Chocolate truffles. Hahaha, he felt horrible once he realized who they actually were from.

These truffles are probably the best truffles I’ve ever had, hands down. I am not a big fan of truffles just because (like I said earlier) they leave a chalky taste and are way to rich are for me. Let’s just say these were the first chocolates to disappear. The box came with a wide range of truffles, and none of them disappointed. You wont find weird ones like raspberry-orange-marmalade or something 😉

sjaaks3

Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates are not only incredible but they are very reasonably priced! My husband couldn’t believe how in-expensive they were for being Organic/Vegan.

These Dark Chocolate Covered Almonds where actually the last to leave our house. I savored every last bite of them. What I loved is they weren’t covered in a thick layer of dark chocolate, rather more like a coco powder of dark chocolate. Which is great because I didn’t feel heavy after eating them. Whenever I had a small chocolate craving, I would grab a few of these bad boys and felt like I fed my craving without stuffing it over the top!

sjaaks4

Lastly, Eli’s Earth bars. They are an amazing candy bar that not only is seriously so flavorful but whenever you purchase one, Eli’s Earth Bars will give back 5% to a non-profit charitble organization that benefits children. How amazing is that. So not only does it taste out of this world but it also helps so many little children around the world.

Sjaaks Organic Chocolate has a wide variety of chocolates that you HAVE to check out. What I love most is how they categorize their chocolates into seasons. What better way to say I love your or even HAPPY EASTER to someone with a box of chocolates. And the best thing, their shipping is super fast. I probably received mine 2-3 days after I ordered it all and nothing was melted.

I highly suggest ordering from Sjaak’s Organic Chocolate with Easter right around the corner. You wont regret it!

Duck Duck Moose Educational Apps {GIVEAWAY} — CLOSED

At my house, we have a little thing we like to call “Quiet Time.” Since my 3-year old no longer naps, we have Quiet Time when my daughter is napping and Mommy needs a break. Quiet Time used to involve my son, “Ralph,” watching (the same) movie every day, but ever since my brother and sister-in-law so graciously gave us an iPad for Christmas, Quiet Time has turned into iPad Time. My brother and sister-in-law are Apple Genuises (really!) and gave us the iPad pre-loaded with all sorts of cool books and educational apps for kids. There are a few that are pretty annoying that I wish he’d never found, but some of my favorites come from a company called Duck Duck Moose.

DDMlogo copy

Duck Duck Moose was started in 2008 by three friends who were having a hard time  finding educational apps for their own children. Since then, they’ve created 16 apps that teach kids skills like reading, math, music and creativity. All 16 apps are available for iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone, and two are available for Android (with more to come in the future). In addition to their educational apps, they also have two music albums, Favorite Spanish Songs by Jose-Luis Orozco, and Duck Duck Music, which can both be purchased on iTunes. Duck Duck Music is a collection of favorite kid songs like “Bingo,” “Yankee Doodle,” Old MacDonald,” and my favorite, “Down By the Bay.” The singer’s voice is lovely and the arrangements are such that they have made songs that are usually annoying become fun and sing-along-able. It’s definitely a favorite at our house!

Duck_CD

But back to their apps. We have Wheels on the Bus, and we were sent codes for Musical Me and More Trucks, all for the iPad (HD versions).  Wheels on the Bus is more of an interactive book than a game-type app. It takes you through the song verse by verse and you can click on things like the wipers, the door, the horn, etc., and they make their respective sound/action. The “Wheels on the Bus” song plays in the background while you are in the app, and the coolest part is you can change the song to play in Spanish, Italian, German, a few different instruments (including the kazoo!), OR you can record yourself singing and play that in the background instead!

Duck_Wheels

Musical Me is an app that  teaches rhythm, pitch, instruments and notes. There are different activities you can do and they are all set to classic children’s songs. You can change songs for each activity and the instructions are fairly easy to follow. However, my three-year old son, who is fairly musically inclined, had a hard time staying interested in the app. I’m not sure if it was a little too advanced for him or just not his thing, but it does say it is recommended for ages 3 and up, so take that as you will.

MM6

If I couldn’t get “Ralph” to get into Musical Me, I couldn’t get him to STOP playing More Trucks! This app is totally his thing. You can watch my video review of it below, or, just know that if you have a two- or three-year old boy and you want something to keep him busy for at least 30 minutes, THIS is the app to get him!

What I love most about Duck Duck Moose’s apps is that they are all colorful with cute illustrations, easy-to-follow instructions, and they teach usable things. I figure if my son is going to spend time playing a game on the iPad, I’d rather him learn something while he’s at it, and he’s bound to with any Duck Duck Moose app. You can check out the rest of their apps on their website or the iTunes store, where they are all $1.99 each (expect Wheels on the Bus, which is $0.99). The Itsy Bitsy Spider and Wheels on the Bus apps are available for Android, also for only $1.99. If you can’t make up your mind on which apps to buy, you can see some clips of each app on their YouTube page.

Enter to win TWO apps of your choice for your Apple or Android device!

I think I mentioned that I grew up with seven brothers, and just one sister.  Yes, my sister and I are totally outnumbered and whenever we get together, which only happens a couple times a year, we have to urge to do especially girly things to make up for all the boy-ness that usually dominates.  Earlier this month, I got visit home and catch up with my mom and sister while we chit-chatted on all sorts of topics from Prom to how to curl your hair with a flat iron, and one topic that came up as we were talking about shoes was that of foot covers that you wear with dress shoes.  Come to find out, my mom has a strong affinity towards ugly foot covers!  If they are not pretty, she does NOT want to see them.  While I was visiting, my sister found some plain economy foot covers to wear with her dressy heels for the wedding, but I knew there had to be something prettier out there.  Some kind of cover to wear with heels and flats that you’re not embarrassed over if some of it peeps out.  My search began as soon as I got home, and hey, Mom, I just found a pretty kushy solution!

Kushyfoot-Logo

These foot covers from Kushyfoot are just what we were talking about needing!

Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy a little fashion show of my feet:

IMG_3533

Here we have the Ultra Low Cut Foot Cover in Black and nude.  What makes these more than just foot covers that keep your shoes from getting sweaty and stinky, are that they are…you guessed it: cushy!  They contain a sewn-in foot cushion and a heel guard so that the ball of your foot has a soft place to land and the cover stays on your foot.  They are so stretchy that you’ll get a good fit regardless of your shoe size.

IMG_3535

Next on the runway is the Sport Foot Cover in Black.  This cover is great for athletics because it is well ventilated and the heel stays put.  This is great because when you’re out for a run, or in the middle of a tennis match, the last thing you want to do is take a break to put your sock back in place.  My feet are kept cool because the materials are quite breathable.

sport

And now is where the fashion show really gets fun!  Here I am wearing the Dot Foot Cover.  So fun!  I found the elastic to be a little tight on this pair, and it left some imprints after wearing them for three hours at church, but perhaps they just need to be broken in a little, and the tightness will easy over time.

IMG_3546

And the really gorgeous show stopper: the Lace Mary Jane!  The lace is so pretty, and the elastic ruffle across my feet is the perfect touch!

IMG_3549

The lace throughout the foot looks delicate and pristine, but its actually quite strong and feels fairly durable.  I only wish the lace strap stayed down a little better, but I imagine taking an iron to it would flatten it right up.

IMG_3552

These can be worn with all sorts of shoes, but go particularly great with heels when you aren’t wearing additional socks or tights. Spring and summer are especially when I am wearing my best shoes without nylons or leggings and I worry about the moisture that collects inside my shoes and probably wears down the materials.  I found these Kushyfoot foot covers to be extremely comfortable, and I will definitely think twice about leaving the house in heels without them.

If you wear shoes, you should consider these dainty beauties from Kushyfoot!  Mom, I’m sending a pair your way 🙂

As stated in my bio, I am a thrift-store shopaholic.  I love the hunt for fabric, buttons, trim, lace, etc.  I’ve been known to attack the frumpiest of dresses for the fabric, rip out the zipper, and sew up something totally new.  I’m not afraid to get personal with any pre-loved outfit, except for one that has pit stains or deodorant remains.  Nasty.  I HATE DEODORANT STAINS!  I hate touching them, seeing them, and especially washing them out of my favorite clothes.

logo

When I had the opportunity to review Truly’s All Natural Deodorant, I thought, “All-natural: yesssssss” (said in a dramatic sigh as I throw my head back).

When I opened the container and before I read the ingredient list, I thought, ‘This reminds me a lot of coconut oil, actually, like a really thick Crisco’.  Go figure, the ingredients are: Organic Coconut Oil, Powdered Sugar (sugar, cornstarch), Baking soda, Beeswax.  That’s it!
homepage_banner_2_img
Yes, that’s exactly what I thought too!  Now don’t be afraid of deodorant in a round container instead of a stick.  You use it like a cream, and though you do have to touch it to put it on, I really love being able to control exactly how much I use and place it where I want it.  I seem to always smear the deo on my clothes as I’m trying to reach my armpit, or fit a sweater over my head.  And again, I HATE WHITE DEODORANT STAINS!  Yuck!  So this set-up is great.
IMG_3045
This stuff is great for sensitive skin, and you don’t have to worry about odd skin reactions to harsh ingredients.  And yes, if you’re wondering, it smells just like coconut oil!  Fairly tropical, pleasant, and effective smelling.  I also am a huge fan of this product being strictly a deodorant without the anti-persperant, because I’ve found it is the harsh chemicals and the acidity of the antiperspirant that makes clothes change color–you know, the yellowing in the armpits of your favorite white sweater.  This is exactly how I like it.
homepage_banner_1_img
So does it work?  Truly!  Haha.  I put it on at the beginning of a crazy busy day, and I felt clean and fresh all day.  I didn’t notice any grossness after hoisting kids, hauling groceries, housework, or even after an intense phone call that would usually get my pits working hard.  Is this post becoming a bit too personal?  I feel like this deodorant is 100% effective, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE how it is packaged in cream-like tub with a vintage label.  I will be using nothing but this until I’ve scraped out every ounce.
Everything comes from a home-based business in Delaware and this is their first year selling their products in an online shop!  I would love to see this product go huge!  Tell your friends about it the next time a ‘sweaty’ conversation comes up, and go purchase some for yourself!  One container for $7.99 is going to go far!

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Silpat® Entremet by HIC Brands that Cook {Review}

I’m sure you’ve caught on to my love of silicone bakeware by now.  I’m pretty much a silicone salesman whenever guests are over and they comment on my collection.  There are just so many good things to say about it!  One piece of silicone bakeware I hadn’t yet tried was this Silpat® Entremet by HIC Brands that Cook, so of course, I jumped at the chance when HIC asked if I would review one.  First of all, an entremet is a French special cake, either sweet or savory, but you could cook all sorts of delicate treats in this.  Basically it is a silicone baking sheet reinforced with a special fiberglass mesh that allows for an even transfer of heat and even cooking throughout the dish.

81APv2Xm0oL._SL1500_

Silicone is naturally nonstick, so specialty items like ganache and jellies are easily removed.  I would next like to try drizzling baking chocolate in intricate designs onto the sheet.  I’m sure I could cool them on the pan and preserving the beautiful presentation after lifting out of a flexible nonstick baking sheet like this.

IMG_2219

The pan measures 10″ x 13 3/4″ x 1″ to fit inside an 13″ x 18″ cookie sheet, since placing it on a hard surface is recommended to transfer best in and out of the oven.  The Silpat® Entremet is microwave, oven and freezer safe, so you could even bake in the microwave on this!  I bet it would do a great job!

IMG_2231

I tried a favorite pumpkin roll recipe of mine, knowing that after cooking the pumpkin in a sheet pan, it would need to be rolled.  The Silpat® Entremet was perfect for the job.  I could flip over the cake and peel off the pan like wax paper.

IMG_2232

I made my recipe with fresh pumpkin that I pureed in October and had frozen for a few months, so it has a much lighter orange color than canned pumpkin.  And don’t tell the kids, but those are actually carrots and zucchini bits instead of funfetti sprinkles, haha!  I am not ashamed of smuggling a few veggies in where I can!  After it cooled, I filled the roll with a cream cheese filling, and it can be sliced like bread.  Oh mercy, I love this stuff!

IMG_2241 IMG_2255

This pan would be great for layered baking, where you bake one hard layer at a time and remove from the pan in an entire piece to place on top of another.  When you’re done, you just rinse off the pan.  No scraping or dishwashing, but the nonstick surface doesn’t hold on to a lot of residue anyways.  I’m excited to try more recipes with this shiny guy!  See what else is new at Harold Import Co. and try your hand at some new recipes using your own Entremet, then come back and share with me your recipes!

Alo-Verix by Bio-Scriptives {Review}

I’m only 26, but I feel like my youth is over!  I feel like this last birthday was the tipping point, and instead of a body that is flourishing, growing, and self-replenishing, I now have a body that is aging, wearing thin in places, and needs a lot more upkeep to feel normal!  Recently, I’ve felt like its time to get serious about skincare and really invest in some products that are going to help my skin look youthful.  Our skin is not always going to look like it did in our younger years!

aloverixTagA request to review Alo-Verix couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.  This is a deep moisturizer and anti-aging cream with an advanced hydrating formula full of natural extracts to fight dry skin.

First of all, I like the clean appearance of the packaging with the silver details in the label.  The product comes in a good quality bottle and lid, with fully functioning and clog-free nozzle and seal.  Nothing would crack if I dropped it on a ceramic tile floor.

IMG_2290

I didn’t know what to expect and was somewhat surprised when what squirted out looked a little like…snot?  The yellowish color took me a little by surprise as I was expecting something clear or white, but I wasn’t really offended by the color :).  It looks healthy!

The Alo-Verix does not have a sweet or flowery scent, but rather something very earthy or…plant-like?  Let’s just say it doesn’t smell artifically fragranced, and I think I like that.  I smells natural, which is exactly the kind of thing you want on your face.

The mixture may look watery, but it absorbs quickly!  I used 3-4 squirts to get to where my whole face felt covered and thoroughly moisturized.  It melts into my skin nicely with a cooling feeling, but nothing over-stimulating or tingling.

IMG_2285The first time applying it, my skin felt adequately moisturized and a little more firm.  My face felt a tad bit tighter, as if it was being “youthened”, if that is a word.  Tighter skin around the face is a signature of youth, correct?  If so, then yes, I think my face does feel younger.

In addition to my nightly facial routine, I’ve been sneaking it in throughout the day whenever my face feels dry.  I have been using this product for several days now, and though I didn’t notice a reduction of redness at first, as the bottle claims, I do believe I am seeing a difference over time.  I am excited to keep using it daily to keep enjoying the benefits of such a unique combination of moisturizers, among non-irritating amino acids, fatty acids, shea butter, aloe vera and resveratol.

Overall, I’m so pleased with this product, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a trusted moisturizer that focuses on reducing the signs of again.  Maybe I’ll still look 26 for many years to come!

The doorbell ringing and knowing it is the box of something you’ve been waiting for: magical.  Knowing that in said box is surprise of goodies for your little one, tailored to his age and stage, hand-picked, and full of favorites you and baby are going to love: very magical!

logo@2xJust such a box arrived on our doorstep today!  I honestly had no idea what to expect, and hoped that one or two things inside would be age-appropriate for “Little Brother”, so that we could use it today.  As soon as I saw the Veggie Puffs and cute nested bowls, and thought, “How did they KNOW?!”  The baby is all about eating right now, and can’t seem to get enough of whatever is in sight, and I had just put on my shopping list to go out and get these little puffs.  I was so excited to pull out more treats from this “Fun with Food”-themed box from Citrus Lane! Within minutes, I had the baby in his high chair ready to try out these cute snack bowls and puffs.  The bowls are the perfect size for everything!  I used some for my toddler’s dinner and was so pleased with their durability, especially after one was dropped onto the floor without a scratch.  Certainly “tough enough to handle anything junior can dish out”.

We also got a Goodbyn snack container (cheery, lightweight, and perfect for a mother of two who don’t yet know how to share), a Grapes Fruit & Veggie toy by Under the Nile (adorable, organic, and baby-friendly), and a Juice Beauty Nutrient Moisturizer for me!  Thanks Citrus Lane!
