Can you tell that we like to read?

388117_10151412362010894_2144559091_n

Yes, we like to read lots.

All winter long and into the early spring we were shut ins around here.  So all of our reading took place indoors.  We didn’t even venture out to the library.  No siree.  Why is that?  First, it was super cold outside.  Second, it was super cold outside.  Third, it was super cold outside.  Okay you get the idea.  It was super cold outside.  Then… Don’t even get me started on the amount of snow that was dumped on us.  Loads and loads.  All winter long.  I thought that it would never end.  We even got a snow storm when I was postpartum in the hospital with Cache.  Oops. I think I must have left that out of Cache’s birth story.   Yes, I know that I forgot to put that part in.  Basically a HUGE snow storm decided to come rolling in the day after he was born and we weren’t sure if we were ever going to get to leave the hospital.  For some reason when it snows in St. Louis the ENTIRE city shuts down.  Does that happen in other cities?  Anyway, back to our love of books… Now that the weather is simply glorious outside (not too hot and not too humid yet) we can take our reading outdoors.

My friends over at Little Tikes sent Banjo and Ruby these adorable garden chairs.

The chairs are the perfect size for their little tushies and are now their favorite reading spots in the backyard.

We finished our patio late in the season last year, so we didn’t really get to enjoy it before it started to snow.

littletikes8

But this year we were ready for the spring and summer!  In fact we have been dining al fresco for quite a while now.

littletikes6Basically as soon as it stopped snowing.

That’s why when my friends over at Little Tikes  (Yes, I said LITTLE TIKES *squeal*) offered to send us a picnic table for our kiddos I jumped at the chance.  And of course you know what that means…  If I get one then one of YOU gets one, too!  *SQUEAL* from you, right?!

The Easy Storeâ„¢ Picnic Table with Umbrella is amazing.  Seriously dandy.  As soon as it came Banjo had to open the box immediately.  He even starting dragging the pieces from the front entry to the back patio.  Fortunately for me it require no tools to put together.  I’m all about the ease of things like that.  The entire table just snaps together and the instructions were super easy to follow.

Here we are at snack time:

And then dinner time with cousin H:littletikes

My kids cannot get enough of their new table!

What’s more???  It stores aways really dandily.

I have a five-year-old in my house!  We just celebrated his birthday last week, and I really can’t believe that he’s grown up so much into such an independent, fun-loving boy.  I’m really excited for this next year and all of the fun things he’ll be learning, and one of the things that popped into my head while we were outside the other day is that he should be losing the training wheels on his bike and learning how to ride a two-wheeler!

kinderfeets

I’m a little nervous to just take those training wheels off and send him on his way, so I was searching for something that could ease the transition and help him feel more confident before sending him into the world of skinned knees and banged-up elbows.  I was ecstatic to come across Kinderfeets, which is actually designed for children ages 2 to 5 years old!  This wooden bike helps children transition to any pedal-powered bicycle at their own comfort level, and they can quickly move their feet from the pedals to the ground as needed.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPEwb28qAFM]

” More than a toy, Kinderfeets is a father’s gift to his son. Disappointed with the push bikes available, Dutch designer Oscar Mulder decided to create his own balance bike for his son, Sebastiaan.  Oscar wanted Sebastiaan to be able to cruise once he became confident enough, so he broke the push bike mold and added footpegs. Knowing kids love to get dirty, he added a removable seat cover that can go in the wash with the rest of the laundry. Other push bikes have inflatable tires that go flat, interrupting the fun. But Kinderfeets’ tires don’t require air. Plus, Kinderfeets’ colorful chalkboard finish provides a reusable canvas for children to exercise their creativity. Older now, Sebastiaan rides a regular bike with ease and confidence – all thanks to the push bike his father designed with him in mind.

We received the red Kinderfeets bike to review, and this product actually arrived just days before my son’s birthday!  It’s always fun to have such a big present to open, and my son also loved assembling the Kinderfeets with Dad as much as he loved riding it!  From the very start, he immediately jumped on and was able to “walk” with the bike to get it started before lifting his feet onto the pedals and coasting down the driveway.  He was just fine when going straight, but it took some time and “getting used to” on turns and when he started to go a little faster than he planned.  It was easy for him to simply put his feet down and stop himself or to catch himself before falling.  His balance on the bike has become so much better over the week, and he’s able coast much further more confidently.

The other part that my son loved was the chalkboard finish — he spent a good part of the afternoon writing on his bike with chalk and decorating it with his name and other fun designs!  I thought this was a great way to personalize his bike without doing anything permanent, and this feature certainly set Kinderfeets apart from other bikes.

Since Kinderfeets is designed for both toddlers and preschoolers, I wondered how my two-year-old would do on the Kinderfeets bike.  I took him outside the other morning (while my five-year-old was at preschool, of course!), and I was surprised by how quickly he took to balancing and moving himself.  The seat was set a little high for him, but he was still able to catch on to the idea of maneuvering himself around using his own feet and then pulling his feet up once he got going.  Once my older son transitions to a two-wheeler bike, I imagine that this Kinderfeets will be quickly taken over by his little brother.  🙂

When we lived overseas, we would travel toward the northern end of the island to stay at a military resort that was right on the beach.  Our cabana was literally feet from the beach, and we would spend all day going to the beach to play, then heading back to our room to eat or take a nap before heading right back out again to kayak or ride the banana boat.  Because we were so spoiled in this way, I really don’t remember going to the beach to just play for a couple of hours and I certainly can’t think of a time that we went to the beach for the entire day.

Since moving to North Carolina, though, and living 30 minutes from the beach, we’ve made plenty of trips to and from and the beach for a couple of hours — it’s about all that we can handle!  I know that some of my friends have been able to head out there in the morning and stay clear until the sunset, but we’ve not made that jump just quite yet.

mail

One of the first times that we went to the beach, we were so completely unprepared!  Looking back, I blame that on my experiences of being able to race right back to our oceanside cabana to get anything we needed — we had some of the fun essentials (buckets and shovels, boogie boards, etc.), but we forgot to bring snacks of any kind, and we didn’t have any sort of sunshade.  I’m so glad we had good friends who have been going for years since we were able to share their goodies from their cooler, and they let us borrow one of their beach umbrellas.

 main

When I was given the opportunity to review for Rio Brands and I noticed their beach umbrellas, I was ecstatic at the thought of having our own umbrella to use for this very last month that we’ll be able to enjoy the NC beaches!

 umbrella

We were sent the Total Sun Block 7′ Umbrella to review, and, again, my husband pulled it out as soon as it arrived in the mail.  The poles were sturdy without being too heavy, making it easier to carry down to the beach.  The anchor part at the end of the main pole allows for the umbrella to basically be screwed into the ground, which was perfect for getting the pole into the ground in the first place!  It can easily be set up at the beach, at the park, in your yard, whatever!  The shade itself blocks 99.8% UVA/UVB rays and the unique square shape seemed to fit our family of four (albeit two little kids!) just fine.

Along with this great sun block umbrella, Rio Brands features other chairs and sun shades for all day fun at the beach or outdoors in the summer heat!

Summit Toys {Giveaway} – CLOSED

I know that parts of the United States (hello, Midwest!) is still getting plenty of snow, but we here in coastal North Carolina have finally been able to take our kids outside and play in the 50-60 degree weather.  Although I love the cold, I have to admit that my mom-of-two-young-boys side is itching for some warmer weather so we can all go out and play.  And so I don’t have to find jackets each morning.  And so I can be done washing loads of socks.

With that in mind, these toys from Summit Toys are some perfect spring and summer weather toys to get the kids outside and then to give them something to do!  Summit Toys offers three main lines of toys, and we were lucky enough to try out one from each line!

Test Pilot

I’m sure that my boys (and husband included!) would love just about anything from the Test Pilot line, as they spent hours together playing with a fun remote control helicopter we own and a set of rockets my husband received for his birthday a couple of years ago.  These toys didn’t disappoint!

Afterburner Launch Tube

As soon as I opened the box from Summit Toys, the Afterburner Launch Tube was the first thing out!  The paratrooper can be launched high into the air through the launch tube, and a little trial and error leads to some great results!  Summit Toys also offers the opportunity for kids to “record flight test techniques online and compete with other kids across the country”.

Backyard

The Backyard Safari line caught my eye since I can remember my two younger brothers looking for bugs and lizards for HOURS; we usually had some sort of outdoor creature in a “habitat” for a day or two before letting it back outside.  I’m not overly girly, but I’m definitely NOT a tomboy — this mom is going to need some help when it comes to catching bugs!

bug vac

The Outfitters Laser Light Bug Vacuum is perfect for this mom and is equally enticing to my boys!  The built-in magnifying glass allows for bugs to been seen right in the bug vacuum and then released back into nature or transferred to another habitat.

Zillions

The Zillions line is perfect for the budding lemonade stand entrepreneur and for an introduction to money and saving money.

Smart Bank

A couple of months ago, at the height of his United States obsession, my four-year-old started collecting the United States quarters, and we put them on a collection board.  Since then, he’s been more and more interested in coins — this Smart Bank was perfect for him, and it is just too dang cool!  It counts your money as you insert each coin, sorts it by coin, and then subtracts the amount when you dispense a coin at the bottom.

If you’re looking for toys with great quality and a great price, take a look at Summit Toys for some great toys with a twist!
