Triple Shine Jellies

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘jellies’? Is it a ton of wonderfully, delicious spreads for homemade bread? Maybe those totally cute sandals you had growing up? Did you know that in the glorious world of nail polish ‘jellies’ actually means something? I didn’t for the longest time until I heard of a cute nail polish trick called a ‘jelly sandwich’ where you essentially sandwich a design or glitter polish between two coats of a jelly polish. I’m so excited to tell you about these polishes!

Jellies is a term given to a specific kind of nail polish that is designed to let you see through it slightly. It’s as if you’re looking through a bowl full of gelatin with fruit in it. You can see what’s in it but the color of the fruit has changed because of the gelatin. The same thing happens when you use a jelly polish, the end result even looks like it would feel like gelatin. I’ve never bought any jelly nail polishes before so when Sally Hansen decided to send me their new line of Jellies I was ecstatic and couldn’t wait to try them out!

As soon as they arrived I got to work seeing what I could do with these cutes! The new line is called the Triple Shine Tropical Jellies Collection. It’s made up of 6 colors (from left to right) Vitamin D-Light, Water Melon, Jell-ous?, Grape Jelly, Ice Tint, and Sea Through.

Sally Hansen Triple Shine Tropical Jellies Collection

To start I wanted to give this whole ‘jelly sandwich’ idea a go. I started off with Jell-Ous? It just felt like it would be the perfect pink to go with this rockin’ glitter polish I have. I put on the first coat and was surprised by how thin it was. I kept working on it. I did an accent nail to show how the glitter looks between jelly polish coats. I did two coats of jelly polish, then glitter polish, then two more coats of jelly polish. On all of the other nails I did 4 coats of jelly polish.

I really like the pink color alone. However, it didn’t give me quite the effect I was hoping for on the jelly sandwich level. Instead of trying out the same idea with all of the other colors I decided to see what else I could do with them. First, I thought that maybe I could use the jelly polish to give regular nail polish some dimension when glitter was added. I painted my nails blue then used Ice Tint to layer the glitter polish.

Ice Tint

It gave it some dimension but you have to get really close to notice. I’m a huge polka dot fan! This time I wanted to give Water Melon a try. I painted my nails pink and then put a couple white polka dots on. After they dried I painted one coat of Water Melon on top of it. I did this 2 more times, alternating between dots and coats. I was shocked to see that because the jelly polish is so thin it was actually giving me this really amazing ombre effect! Now I can get this effect any time with out having to switch colors 4 times!

Water Melon

I wanted to see how the ombre effect would work on solid white nails. I did one coat of Grape Jelly on each nail then for the next coat I skipped my thumb nail and painted all the others. I continued dropping a nail for each coat after. The color gets oh so slightly darker with each coat. I really liked how it turned out but I wasn’t sold just yet, I really wanted a more noticeable change.

Grape Jelly

I wanted to try out the last two colors but this time I started with an actual color as the base. For both of the colors I left my thumb nail just as the base color and applied the jelly polish to the other four fingers in same manner as I did with the Grape Jelly polish. I started with a light green color and then I used Sea Through to create the ombre. I love how it transforms into a green apple color! Vitamin D-Light has a delicious orange tint to it. I just knew I wanted to have the base for this one be a bright yellow. I’m loving the tangerine color it transforms into!

Sea Through and Vitamin D-Light

Final Thoughts:

Overall I would say this line isn’t the perfect polish to use if you’re specifically going to be doing a jelly sandwich, they’re too thin and even after applying 4+ coats I don’t believe you can achieve that specific effect. However, there are so many other ways to use them! You can use them to enhance your polishes, change their color completely, or gradually change them with an ombre effect. I wonder what would happen if you painted your nails red and painted Ice Tint on top? Maybe an amazing purple tint? I can just see some ombre tiger stripes on my nails in the future! If you’re looking for a way to spice up your nail art, I would say that these are a great place to start! You can see all of the colors in this collection as well as all of their other nail polish colors by visiting their website here.

You guys.  I just had the most incredible weekend!!  It was a 10-year-reunion of sorts for my college acappella group.  Think “Pitch Perfect” and you’ve got it exactly right.  You can actually find my name in the book “Pitch Perfect”, which the movie was based off of.  We were Noteworthy, the first all-female accapella group to win ICCA!!  We met up again to put on a 10-year reunion show and celebrate our new CD release.

As you can see, there was a LOT of lime green and hot pink going on!  As I was gathering all my old Noteworthy clothes to recreate my performance outfit, I decided I HAD to have a hot pink nail polish to match!

Thank you, butter LONDON, for having the perfect shade of hot pink I was looking for.  This is Cakehole.  It was PERFECT for last weekend.

IMG_0370If you haven’t tried butter LONDON lacquer, you’ve got to put it on your priority list.  The mixture is strong and neither too drippy or too thick.  The bottles are heavy and sturdy, and I like the two layers of containment (one rectangular lid and a small round one inside).  Last weekend:

pink2I got lots of compliments about how it looked like a fresh coat, or a brand new nail job, even though it had been a few days.  That, my friends, is the difference between quality polish and not.  Avoiding the daily upkeep and constant chipped repairs is really a nice break.

Lucky me, I also got to pick out this creamy mint color, called Fiver.  Both favorites.  This fresh mint color is perfect for spring!  I think it could be a great winter color too.  Hey, look at that high quality brush!  No stray hairs, long and strong, and easy to maneuver.

fiverThis is currently my favorite, favorite nail polish brand.  They carry dozens and dozens of fun and gorgeous colors.  112 to be exact!  I’m especially loving the 2014 Summer Collection of brights!!

Color Me Monthly {Review}

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

A fresh coat of nail polish has got to be the easiest and fastest ways to feel glamorous!  I love how my mom usually has clear fingernails, but when holidays and vacations roll around, she’s quick to put on some color!  I feel the same way.  A lifestyle of picking dried pasta off the floor, scrubbing dishes, and picking children’s noses is not conducive to having immaculate nails every day of the year, but whenever we travel or have company over, hit me up!CMM-logo-new

I love how certain colors of polish remind me of certain events, places, or people.  There is a coral I own that I always associate with a best friend who wore it first.  Deep maroon reminds me of our 5th anniversary, and tan/cream will always remind me of my brother’s wedding.  And now, sparkly green will always remind me of this Christmas!

Color Me Monthly is a monthly nail polish subscription that will add some surprises to your nail polish collection.  It takes out the selection-stress and the need to go polish shopping.  When you sign up for a $7 subscription, you get a new, hand-picked and fashion forward color every month!  The last time I tried Color Me Monthly in April (and you can read that review HERE), I fell in love with the high-quality polish that lasted for easily more than a week without a chip.

This month (Dec.), the color is this sparkling green called “Wrapped in Tinsel”!  Could it be more perfect for Christmas time?  The fantastic part about this high-quality nail polish is that I know it will last all of the holiday break.  I did a review for Color Me Month last spring, and I’m pretty sure it was a full week before I noticed a single chip.

I love being able to get a currently on-trend color, hand-picked, and delivered to my door.  Its also nice to know that I’ll be getting something eco-friendly, made in the USA, cruelty-free and FULL-SIZE.
This is high quality nail polish!  I would compare it to Essie or OPI, based on the density, shimmer, and how long it remains unchipped.  I imagine these bottles cost well over the $7/month you’d pay for a subscription.  Treat yourself to a very cheap and fun monthly subscription that you can enjoy all month long and beyond!

NourISH Nail Lacquer {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

These days, it seems like organic products are cropping up all over the place, and not just at the grocery store. Organic clothing, organic pet food, organic shampoo, even organic fertilizer! Looking out for toxins, pesticides and harmful chemicals in our household products is not something I think about naturally, so I’m glad other people are identifying them and creating products that limit or eliminate their use. Today’s giveaway is for organic nail lacquer–did you know there are toxic chemicals in nail polish?!?

NourISH Organic Nail Lacquer has developed a nail polish that is not only organic and toxin-free, but also nourishes, strengthens and protects your nails while it’s on! Apparently, most polishes contain the “big three” or the “toxic trio” of Formaldehyde, DBP/Phthalates, and Toluene, all linked to birth defects, allergic reactions, headaches, liver and kidney problems. Yuck! NourISH removes these chemicals and uses in their place Soy Protein and Vitamins C and E, which replenish dry, brittle nails and prevent splitting. NourISH also contains three key ingredients to prevent nail fungus: Tea Tree Oil, Lemongrass Oil and Thyme Oil.   But, like their website says, “Don’t think a nail polish with clinical benefits has to look ‘clinical’—NOURISH is chip resistant, long lasting and comes in a variety of luxuriant colors.” It’s true–check out their color palette:

I had a hard time picking just one polish to review. I ended up choosing Cream Tangerine because I loved that tangerine color that was so hot this summer. Unfortunately, this “tangerine” was more of a blood orange color; I was hoping for more orange than red.

But I still love the benefits of these lacquers! I think it’s amazing that you can protect your nails from fungus while nourishing them AND making them look good! The NourISH Base Coat looks white in the bottle but dries clear and with a beautiful shine. Just the Base Coat alone will protect and nourish your nails, even if another brand of polish is applied on top of it. The Colored Lacquer is really rich; I only applied one coat and it was thick and very opaque. My biggest pet-peeve with nail polish is when you can see the nail underneath, and there was no nail-peeping with this lacquer! The clear Top Coat is strong and shiny; I used it over some other polish this weekend and it stayed on longer than most polishes ever do.

NourISH also carries the Barefoot Botanicals line, which is an organic, vegan, Kosher, GMP Compliant line of creams and scrubs to care for your feet.  All of these great products can be purchased at www.NourishMyNails.com.  Each nail lacquer retails for $17.95 and the Barefoot Botanicals Cracked Heel Repair Creme and Pomegranate Sugar & Shea Scrub costs $18.95. Lucky for you, NourISH is offering YOU the chance to win a Prize Basket worth more than $150! The basket will include three colors of your choice, a Top and Base Coat, Anti-fungal Nail Solution, Barefoot Botánica product (Cracked Heel Repair Cream and Pomegranate Sugar Scrub), a Nail File, Buffer Block and Nail Clippers!

butter LONDON Nail Lacquer {Review}

Whenever I am feeling the most grungy, unpretty, or down about my appearance, my favorite pick-me-up is a little nail job.  Looking back at my nail polish purchases, they seem to coincide with my pregnancies, haha.  But really, no matter your size, the state of your hair, or whether your legs are shaved or not, your nails can be beautiful!  I love that reminder every time I look at my fingers or toes–I am beautiful!
So I had never actually tried butter LONDON nail polish until this week, but I’ve seen their delightfully dreamy colors in all the fashion magazines for years and years, and have always wanted to get my hands on one of these lacquers.  My nail dreams came true when butter asked if I would review two of their colors and…(trumpets!)…their Matte Finish Top Coat!!
So what makes butter nail lacquers so fantastic?  First of all, their lacquers are formulated without using harmful ingredients like Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP or Parabens, and they are the trusted nail polish of choice for many designers.  Butter has been an integral part of Fashion Week since the start.  They have a specially trained team of manicurists and the designers that sit together and discuss the desired look to create the exact color and shade, since nails are practically an accessory on their own, and play such an integral part of a finished ensemble.
Ok, lets admire these colors.  Here I have Shandy Nail Lacquer, which is an opaque, light apricot crème, as seen at La Perla, New York Fashion Week A/W 13.  I think this color can be spot-on for any season or occasion.  It is sophisticated, neutral, and matches with everything!  In case you didn’t know, a Shandy is a refreshing beverage mixed with citrus-flavored soda, carbonated lemonade, ginger ale, or cider, so envision yourself drinking something ritzy as you paint this on.
Next up is Scoundrel Nail Lacquer, which is a medium tone purplish-mauve nail lacquer that can appear darker or lighter depending on what clothing you are wearing.  This is perfect for spring!  I am usually not a fan of purple, and I don’t think I own ANY article of purple clothing, but this Scoundrel color is making me reconsider.  I definitely think its a prettiest of butter’s purple nail lacquers.  Ok, back to the matte.  I LOVE THIS LOOK! Can you see the difference on my (desperately in need of a pedicure) toes?  The bottom triangle part has the matte top coat applied.
This matte top coat is such a chic way to give your manicure a new look by taking away the shine, and giving the color a flat, matte, and beautiful look!  I saw it first on Pinterest, didn’t know how to achieve it, but was sold immediately.  It paints on just like a top coat, with the same kind of bottle and brush as the nail lacquer, and though it goes on clear, it almost immediately turns matte.  I didn’t get to watch it happen because I painted one hand, then as soon as I was done with my other hand, the first was already matted up.
These nail polish bottles are much bigger in person than I envisioned them to be, and the brushes are top quality.  My nails undergo a lot of stress at home–scrubbing dishes, scratching surfaces, picking noses, etc.  I don’t have no desk job.  I’m so happy to report that butter can hold up to anything.  It took several days before I noticed a chip!  Thank you butter!

Visit butter LONDON online and fall in love with each their 51 colors!  And try out their matte finish top coat!!

Megan Miller Collection {Review}

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I LOVE to paint my nails!  I was totally the little girl who always had her nails done in bubble gum pink.  Pretty much every first day of school from kindergarten to college, I would paint my nails to match my first-day-of-school outfit!  I love seeing the new color every time I use my hands or glance at my feet.  Nail polish is one of those “makes me happy” objects I’d hate to live without.

Needless to say, I’ve been through a lot of nailpolish colors and brands over my lifetime.  At the bottom of the list would be the $.99 drugstore polish, and at the top would be the Megan Miller Collection!

First take note of the custom designed and molded bottles—I really appreciate a bottle that won’t tip over as I’m dipping the brush in and out.  I could also definitely tell a difference in the high quality brush.  It allowed for very smooth and consistent strokes, despite a shaky hand, so I didn’t have to make a single touch-up.

Probably most notable is the natural cork top that is great for gripping, and the 100% natural raffia hand-picked from Madagascar!  Extravagant, huh!

Simply fabulous colors!  First I chose “Latte”, and I’m so pleased with it.  I’ve been looking for a subtle color, not quite nude, and not too crazy, that I could wear with everything and still look professional, or atleast like a grown up.  (No more bubble gum pink.)  I loved the way it looked on, but I wonder if it would complement all skin tones.  It reminds me of a favorite pair of nude pumps that go with everything and look SO so classy with almost anything.  I think this color has the same effect of elongating the fingers, just like skin-colored heels lengthen the legs.

I just couldn’t resist adding some cheetah speckles 🙂 Pay no mind to my flip flop tan.

I also picked out “Foxy”!  I’ve been on the hunt for a good solid gray for months!  I didn’t want shiny silver, or anything metallic.  Just a pretty gray, not too dark, not too light.  Foxy = perfect.  I have only 2 coats on in this picture, and I think a 3rd would be just right.  I want to wear this on my fingers for the entire Fall season.  I think it would look great on the working woman and city girl!

On top of exquisite colors and quality, Megan Miller nail polish is also free of dibutyl phthalate, toluene, and formaldehyde—all dangerous chemicals found within the composition of other nail polish.  I’m usually not one to splurge on nailpolish, but I think $12 is well worth the price for one of these beauties.
