Little Passports {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Do your kids ever surprise you with things they know that you didn’t realize they knew? I recently started a co-op preschool with some friends, and when it came time to say the Pledge of Allegiance on my day to teach, my 3-year-old son was able to recite the whole thing! I’m sure a few words were wrong and he has absolutely NO idea what it means, but I was just shocked that he could say it all! He also answered correctly that we live in the United States when I asked where we lived (though I was trying to get the kids to say California), but that one didn’t surprise me. I know that knowledge was due to our subscription to Little Passports.

You may remember a bit about Little Passports when Heather Ann reviewed them back in January. But in case you are a newcomer to Dandy Giveaway, here’s a recap: Little Passports is a monthly subscription box geared towards ages 5-12 that follows the adventures of characters Sam and Sofia as they travel across the United States and throughout the world.  To join, you begin by selecting either the World Edition (ages 5-10) or the USA edition (ages 7-12). I was sent the USA edition, which is actually geared towards ages 7-12, and I couldn’t agree more. My 3-year-old son was thrilled to receive a package and learn more about the United States, but he definitely didn’t get as much out of it as he would have if he were even a few years older.

first

When his welcome package came, we hung the map of the United States in his room and filled out a few pages in his Field Guide. He loved taking pictures with the “old camera” (it includes a disposable!) and the Scratch Book. A few weeks later we received an envelope with the first two states. It came with a book filled with fun facts, history and culture about Pennsylvania and Arkansas. There was also a postcard, stickers and a pop-out model from both states. My son loved putting the stickers in the field guide, but everything else was way above his learning level.

collage

For a 7-14-year-old, however, it is perfect! The book about the states is filled with mazes, games, word searches, pictures, and activities to teach loads of interesting facts about each state. An envelope filled with these goodies will come to your doorstep once a month–for up to 26 months if you do the whole United States!–and you can imagine your child’s excitement to open his package and learn! This would be perfect as a supplemental learning kit for public school or homeschooled kids, especially 5th- or 8th-graders learning about U.S. History.

One of my very favorite things lately are these monthly subscription boxes!  We’ve tried a bunch at our house lately, but just recently have I ventured into the beauty monthly subscription box.  Each time, though, I’ve found a new product to love that I wouldn’t have tried otherwise, and I’ve also had the opportunity to try different techniques with makeup and my hair that have been fun for the start of the summer season!

 main

“Once a month, we  deliver a Beauty Box with four or five handpicked samples directly to your doorstep.  Your Beauty Box will contain items like makeup, skin care products, hair care  products, fragrances and a few other surprises!  Learn more about your samples on our site! You can see exactly what other  beauty lovers are saying about the products. Plus, you’ll find special how-tos and beauty tips right at your fingertips.  We think you’re going to love your samples! If you just have to have more, you can purchase products directly from us or from our partners.”

Here are the contents my the May Beauty Box 5 monthly subscription box that I received last week:

1098thumb

The Jean Pierre Tanning Towelettes — While my stark-white legs and arms are probably screaming for a little color on them, I saw a tutorial about using self-tanner to get rid of tan lines that inevitably show up (even through my SPF-50-every-two-hour application).  I’m tucking these away in my cabinet for just that time.OFRAOFRA Loose Shadow in Diamond Glitz — This is the third container of loose eyeshadow that I’ve received in these makeup/beauty subscription boxes, and I think I’m sold on them!  This color is a neutral taupe with just a hint of shimmer, and the application easily varies from light daytime looks to dramatic nighttime ones.

eye pencil

Model Co Black Eyeliner — I LOVE that the sharpener is right in the cap of these eyeliner pencil so that I don’t have to try and find where one might be when I’m racing around in the middle of our crazy morning routine.  Although I’m not generally a fan of black eyeliner, I do love having one on hand for a girls night out or a date night to give a little more pop.

transform-spray

Coolway Transform Styling Spray — This is the perfect example of a product that I didn’t even know existed!  This styling spray cuts your drying time in half and protects hair from damage that comes from high heat.  I use both my blow-dryer and my flat iron (that reaches 450 degrees!) every single day, so this product was a must for me and was my favorite of the bunch.

wipes

LA Fresh Deodorant Wipes — And there are just too many days that I give myself a big ol’ pat on the back for getting myself and my two boys up and out the door just in time for preschool in the morning, only to realize that I’ve forgotten deodorant.  Definitely gross, and I’m not one to head back home when I have a list of errands to run before preschool is done.  I tossed these in the center console and am sure that I’ll have a chance to use them all too soon…

Starbox Monthly Subscription by Starlooks {Review}

Last month, Camille received the April Starbox from Starlooks, and I had the opportunity to review the May Starbox from Starlooks this past week.  I was incredibly impressed by the items that came in my box this month, and I especially love that this subscription includes a number of full-size products for only $15 a month!

Starlooks is a beauty company that features both a makeup line and hair care products, and their monthly Starbox sends a surprise box to subscribers with products that focus on a theme.  After the monthly Starboxes have been sent out to subscribers, they become available on their website for $25 a month — the bonus to this is that you can see exactly what you’ll receive, and the $25 price is still generally half as much as you would pay for the products in the box if bought separately!

main

The theme for this month was “Tribal”, which, I admit, scared me just a little — you remember that I’m usually a natural makeup kind of girl, so I wasn’t sure how these products would work for my preferences.  I had no reason to worry, though.  The packaging was perfect for the theme (zebra print box with a deep red paper inside), and the products were easily applicable to my own makeup routine but provided some new ideas and could easily be used for a more dramatic look.

Cream_Blusher_1024x1024

Cream Blusher ($17) — I really love having a pop of color on my cheeks, but I’ve never used a cream version of blush before.  I loved this product!  Although the color was a bit deeper than I would have selected for myself, a light hand left my very pale skin with just the right hint of color.

Brow_Shader_1024x1024

Brow Shader ($21) — I’m probably going to expose my naiveté when it comes to makeup right here in my review of this product, but for the sake of honesty, I’ll tell you the truth: I’ve never even heard of this kind of product before.  I have fairly thick eyebrows and have never considered the need for filling them in or shaping them with brow liners, etc., but after watching a couple of YouTube videos on using brow shader, I’m sold.  The colors are versatile and the brush is small and perfect for precision.

PigmentLuster_1024x1024

Pigment Luster ($17)  — Again, a little nervous about how “tribal” of a look I was going to get from this pigment luster, but I ended up loving this pop of sparkle that updated my daytime natural makeup look just in time for a date to the movies that evening with my husband!  For those looking for a lot of shine, this would do the trick, too.

All in all, this was a great monthly subscription with some new products that I never would have even thought to purchase for myself — another bonus to signing up for a surprise monthly Starbox from Starlooks!  I’ve since added these to my makeup collection and have used them more often as I’ve become more familiar with them.

Sometimes I have a hard time branching out and trying new trends.  I took an honest inventory of my closet and realized I don’t own anything purple or orange, and nearly everything I’ve sewn for myself this year was a shade of blue.  I tend to get stuck in a style rut, or refuse to accept that something new might look good on me.  You probably know people like this–an older relative or friend still stuck in hairstyles and clothes of the 80s’, convinced that this style or color still looks great on them, so why fix it?  I probably should put myself in this category more often than not.

CMM-logo-new

Take nailpolish.  If I were to go pick out a new bottle of polish every month, I would probably gravitate towards the pinks, corals, and creams every time.  Instead of going out on a limb once in a while, I would probably stick to something safe and familiar.  But where’s the fun in that?thumb.php

Color Me Monthly puts the fun back into your nail polish collection and takes out the selection-stress and shopping!  Sign up for a $7 subscription, and get a new, hand-picked and fashion forward color every month!  This month was a beautiful blue, called “Clear Skies Ahead”.  This color is so perfect for SPRING!!  I am really impressed with this polish.  After two coats, the color was thick and deep.  I only added one layer of top coat, and not a single chip or scratch for FOUR days now.  Very impressive!

IMG_3654

I LOVE the idea of not having to research what colors are in this month, and having something hand-picked show up at my door.  I also like being able to trust that I will be receiving something eco-friendly, made in the USA, and not a cheapy store brand.  This is high quality nail polish!  I imagine buying a bottle of this caliber on its own would be $10 or more, plus the time and effort to choose and buy it at a retailer.

mom

And hey, what a sweet gift for your mom for Mother’s Day!  If she loves doing her nails, a thoughtful bottle in the mail every month would remind her who her favorite daughter is every time she looks at her nails all year long :).  Thank you, Color Me Monthly!

I get a little overwhelmed when I try to shop for make-up.  I’m not completely married to one exclusive brand, so as I peruse the aisles and compare one make-up item to another, I have favorites here and favorites there, and it becomes quite difficult to make decisions.  Sometimes I wish I had a personal assistant to hand-select makeup products that are tested and true, in line with what is popular lately, and hey, if she could drop these things off at my door, I’d be ever so obliged.

Well, wouldn’t you know, Starlooks can do exactly that!  Starlooks carries some of the newest, most affordable, high quality makeup, all while being entirely lead free, emolient free, and cruelty free.  This dreamy makeup line has a monthly box subscription option that you’ll love.

JANUARY

jan2013_1024x1024

These three boxes are still available, so even if you missed the subscription window, you can go back and purchase them individually before they sell out.  Now let me show you the goodies from the APRIL box!  I’ve been anticipating this all month!  It showed up on Saturday afternoon and I dived right in.  The beautiful packaging makes such a lovely first impression!

IMG_3605

The first thing I pulled out of the box was the “Translucent/Nude” Mineralized Powder.  The great thing about this is that it can be used on every skin tone and creates a matte velvety finish.  It has a cute high-quality puff included, and just as it claims, created a smooth, silky topcoat to my makeup, without drying it out.  Beautiful results!  Next was a Tendergloss in the most spring-appropriate shade of glossy pink/nude shimmer.  I don’t like going crazy with the lip color since I have baby hands always grabbing at my face and only a dozen ways to get it smeared, but I still like to add something to my lips.  This color and the quality of the lip stick make this my new all-time favorite purse companion.  I LOVE how it looks–just a hint of shimmer and color.

IMG_3613

Next, I received a “Mint” SPF Lip Balm.  Great scent, great consistency, and the SPF is going to be so important in the coming months!  The last item is my favorite!!  Have you ever heard of a mascara primer?  This is a “Sensation Mascara Primer”, meant to sooth the lashes while moisturizing them, helping them grow.  It also creates a clump-free base for a smooth application of mascara.  I was skeptical that such a product would be necessary or effective, but I was oh so wrong!  After applying the primer, my lashes looked and felt instantly thicker, bulked up, and almost layered as the wand separated my lashes just so.  I applied mascara afterwards, and loved the look so much that I didn’t feel a need to go any further with my eye makeup.  My lashes were so strikingly noticeable, and I kept looking in the mirror throughout the day to admire them.

IMG_3616

Go order April’s Starbox before it is sold out!

What makes Starbox different from other makeup companies is that this artist quality makeup comes in full-size quantities and sizes instead of samples or partial amounts.  I’m am SO impressed with the Starlooks makeup line, and having sampled a few products in this monthly subscription box, I’m only more intrigued and drawn to trying more.

Do consider trying out Starlooks and sign up for next month’s Starbox!  For $15, its really a steal of a deal when you consider the retail value of the products you’ll be getting ($40 – $75 in cosmetics)!

I am in love with a lot of things.  My husband.  My boys.  My electric blanket.  After these begins a long list of food items: ice cream, peanut butter, crepes, red velvet anything, etc. etc. etc.  Yes, you could say I am in love with food.  True for the majority of us?logo_red

Would you be in love with a box of new and tasty treats every month that arrived on your doorstep?  This monthly subscription of goodies is only so appropriately named “Love with Food“, and it contains 8+ hand-picked gourmet food samples.

IMG_2725

I received last month’s delightful Valentines themed box and really enjoyed the yummy combination of sweet and spicy treats. First I dived into the juicy dried cranberries, and then decided that was the last thing I was going to share.
IMG_2728
One of my favorite items was the Tomato Basil Sipping Broth.  I had never tried a soup that comes in a tea bag, and the Tomato Basil green tea infused sipping broth was delicious and it was fun to try something new.  “A Savory Alternative to Coffee or Tea” was just perfect, since I’m Mormon and don’t drink coffee or tea 🙂
My favorite: the Donsuemor chocolate madeleine.  Ya, good thing I can go to the Love with Food shop and order more of any of these items at a reduced cost.  After you get a small taste of a newly found love, that doesn’t have to be the last time you two spend time together.
I should probably say that I snacked from this box over several days or maybe a week or two, but in actuality, I consumed it all in an afternoon.  It was all just so tempting and a perfect combination of items to skip from one to another.  Love that.  Though an entire box of those chocolate madeleines would have been fine too 🙂
 figbar-33c4ffdd1e0435f656ce30bfcd32c20b muscat_jelly-1e243c5640a22d308a141a25f3f61cfd natasha_cookies-7c8ecb9703e5bb48c4ae45b14e80d940 sanders_fudge-bdd81d33357c8f32ad3b99a45b5d095a
The food items included in your box changes every month, but they’re based on seasonal themes, like a box full of healthy snacks in January when we all are health-minded, and then back to the sweets in February when we’re so done with that :).  So what’s my opinion of Love with Food?  I LOVE it!  I think the day you received your monthly box would simply be the best day of the month!

One lucky winner is going to receive a FREE 3-MONTH subscription!

Note that in order to redeem the first-month free trial, the winner must sign up for the service by entering their contact info and payment info as if they were signing up for a monthly subscription, but of course, the winner will not be charged, and they may cancel at any time.

My husband recently was screened and pre-approved to do Marine Security Guard duty at an embassy, and we’re now waiting for orders to the schoolhouse and then on to our adventure around the world!  We’re all excited at the prospect of living abroad again, but my four year old son is over the moon at the idea of traveling to places he’s seen only on his world map and on the computer.  You might remember from this post and this post that he loves to learn about geography, so when I saw Little Passports, I knew that this would be perfect for him — especially now that we’re getting ready to travel ourselves!

  logo

Little Passports is a monthly subscription box geared towards ages 5-12 that follows the adventures of characters Sam and Sofia as they travel across the United States and throughout the world.  To join, you begin by selecting either the World Edition (ages 5-10) or the USA edition (ages 7-12).  **I recognize that my son is a little younger than the ages listed here, but he learned all the states and their capitals and most of the countries and their capitals on his own through online games, books, and movies from the library — I figured that this would be able to capture his attention just fine.  🙂

hiw-world-edition

“Every month, follow our characters Sam and Sofia as they embark on a new country adventure. Your first month’s Explorer Kit arrives in a suitcase and contains everything your child needs to get started: a letter from Sam and Sofia, a map, a passport, stickers, access to online games and more. Country specific packages filled with fun souvenirs, letters, stickers, photos, activity sheets and more arrive every month thereafter.”

hiw-usa-edition“With your USA Edition subscription, Sam and Sofia travel to and experience the wonders of all 50 states.  Kick-off your USA adventure with the first month’s Discovery Kit which includes a letter from Sam and Sofia, a USA Field Guide, a USA scratch book, a map, and a camera.  Sam and Sofia then travel to two new states every month and send an activity-packed travel journal with stickers, postcards, pop-out models and access to online activities.”

We chose the World edition, and I loved that Sara from Little Passports asked for my son’s name to put on the package.  He was so excited to receive a box just for him, and he couldn’t wait to open it up and see what was inside!  He LOVES the suitcase and immediately put the stickers on the outside to decorate it.  We read through the letter together and put the world map up on his wall.

boarding_zone

We also went online with his special code and registered him on the Little Passports Boarding Zone with his own Member Name and password.  From there, he was able to access World Trivia, World Continents, and a World Map Puzzle – he sat for an hour playing the games on there!

You can only imagine his excitement when I told him that this wasn’t just a one-time deal; he could expect another package from Sam and Sofia next month also, only this time with special souvenirs and pictures from a specific country!  We’re both excited to see what will come in the next few weeks!

Subscription plans range from monthly plans ($11.95 a month) to 3-, 6-, and 12-month plans with discounted prices.  Little Passports would be a fun surprise for your own kids, the perfect gift for those near and far away, and an excellent supplement to homeschool curriculum.

Little Passports is offering a 3-month subscription to either their World edition or USA edition for one Dandy reader!  Head on over to Little Passports to take a look at their options, then come back and enter below to win:
