Missionary Posters {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Want to know something cool? Me and fellow Dandy contributor Camille served a mission together! We were Performing Missionaries in Nauvoo, Illinois, for 3 1/2 months and together we sang, danced, acted and sweated the summer of 2006 away. It was awesome!

ValCamToo bad Missionary Posters didn’t exist back then. Missionary Posters  is a company that makes (you guessed it!) posters and calendars for your missionary. The owner, Scott Perry, started Missionary Posters in January 2013 “as a way to help families keep the spirit of missionary work in their homes as their sons and daughters serve around the world.” He himself is a returned missionary who fell in love with the arts and design while serving a mission in Rome, Italy (how could you not?!).  And let me tell you, his eye for design is great. He was able to take this–a picture of my nephew, Elder Hansen, on his mission in Hungary–

…and turn it into THIS!

poster

Doesn’t that look great?! You can see other examples of posters he’s done on his Pinterest page; all are very smartly done and include the same eight elements: a customizable headline (i.e. Serve With Love), photo, name and name tag (in English or the country’s language), country or state flag, mission name, service dates, Scripture images (English or country’s language), and favorite scripture. The end result is a very clean and artful homage to the missionary and his country/state in which he’s serving. It came boxed very carefully and wrapped in tissue paper so I wasn’t worried about anything getting bent or scratched on its way.

The quality of the paper was thick and it looks and feels awesome. My only complaint is the cutting job seemed a little off; there was a small black line running down the right edge of the poster and it seemed to be cut a little too close on the top. And that may have been a design flaw as opposed to a cutting flaw; either way, it didn’t ruin the whole thing for me, it was just something small that I noticed because I am a perfectionist and I notice tiny, insignificant details 🙂

The posters can be printed at 16×20 (what I reviewed), 11×14 and 8×10, and the prices are $49, $39 and $35, respectively. Ordering was really easy–just pick what you want and send in all the info–and Scott was great to work with. He sent a proof of the poster before he printed it so I could double and triple check that all the information I had included was accurate and that I liked the design.  Missionary Posters also makes countdown calendars, but these only come in 16×20 and 11×14 so all the numbers can fit 🙂 The calendars contain the same personalized information as the posters (except for the scripture) and are $38 and $32, respectively.

My first date ever was my Homecoming dance, Junior year, just a week after I turned 16.  I wore a pale yellow dress that I borrowed from a friend, and felt as beautiful as Cinderella!  My date was so charming and at the end of the date, he thanked me for wearing a modest dress.  So neat, huh?  Ladies, I know many of use choose to dress modestly for ourselves, and to be a good example to our daughters, but it is also important to think about how our clothes affect the thoughts of the men in our lives.  I think few will argue that it is hard for a young man to think wholesome uplifting thoughts when his date is wearing something that leaves too little to the imagination.

One of the times in my life when I was particularly cautious about the clothes I was wearing and the impression I wanted to leave on those I encountered was on my LDS mission.  I wanted clothing that was long enough on bottom, high enough in front, and something I wouldn’t have to fudge with to keep myself covered.  Oh how I would have loved this Botanical dress from Sorella Bella!  The print is so romantic!  I love the large, abstract watercolor-look.  The cut is flattering and an invisible zipper closes it up nicely.  The hem is clean and the removable sash makes it just as comfortable and still fitting as ever.  For years, I have fought against florals, and steered clear of anything that looked ‘old lady’ and dated, so I took a risk with this, but after all the positive comments I got when I wore this last week, I’m so glad I did!

The best comments I got were from a cute friend who is about to turn in her mission papers, when she said, “Where did you get this dress?!”  She’s looking to expand her missionary-attire wardrobe, and I was so proud to tell her about Sorella Bella.  Here are some of my other top favorites that I would wear in a heartbeat:

Have you heard all the incredible statistics about the number of new missionaries lately?!  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has just added 58 new missions to accommodate the phenomenal increasing number of young men and women willing and excited to go serve for 2 years!  Chances are, you know someone soon leaving or recently left on a mission, or you yourself have a lot of pride for your own mission!

LDS Mission Tees makes custom made-to-order t-shirts with your mission initials designed in a sharp diamond design that looks like a super hero badge!  Here’s mine!

Illinois Nauvoo MissionIts true, I didn’t serve an 18-month proselyting mission, but I was able to serve a “performing” mission in Nauvoo!  We were set apart for 4 months and gave the tours in the historic homes, then performed 5-7 shows/day.
