SuperSwizz Spiral Slicer {Review}

Disclosure: I got this product as part of an advertorial.

If you sometimes find veggies boring, or its hard to think of creative ways to make them appealing again, I’ve found a great product for you.  This is the SuperSwizz Spiral Slicer, available on Amazon for $19.95.

IMG_9865[1]This really is a simple contraption, but it is really fun to use and really effective on crunchy fruits and vegetables!  The double cyclone has two different sizes of blades that allow for two Julienne sizes.  Just insert a food item and start cranking.  The grates are sharp and it takes minimal effort to twist and get instant food shreds.

zucI think my favorite features about this product are its size and care.  The contraption doesn’t come with any interchangeable parts, doesn’t need to be fastened to the counter, and its small enough to fit anywhere among the appliances.  I LOVE that all it takes to wash is a rinse and a cycle in the dishwasher.  I love my low-maintenance tools and they seem to get used the most.

What you get is a platter full of professionally sized veggie strings along with the awkwardly shaped stubs at the end.  You can crank more goodness out of the ends by spearing them with the sharp circular lid so that your fingers don’t get too close to the blades.  What you see are very long, continuous zucchini straws, which require some chopping afterwards to make them easy to serve.  I cooked these up for visiting family guests last night, and they told me the zucchini was delicious and fun to eat!  We discussed the product and decided that we probably wouldn’t pay $20 for this item, and that maybe $10 would be more reasonable, but if you’re really into fine dining, like to impress with your cooking, or have a hard time eating vegetables, that this might be totally worth it.  I think its a really fun product!

Remember, you can find this on Amazon HERE for $19.95.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

A little part of me dies every time I see Charlie take to some packaging with his teeth, or I find my nice sewing scissors in the box of art supplies, or when I find myself trying to crack garlic with my fist.  There are, of course, handy gadgets for all of these uses and occasions, but better yet, there is a product that can handle all of these excellently well!

Created by AnySharp, introducing the Smart Sizzors, your home’s one-man show.  This guy can handle anything, and its versatility makes it useful in almost any situation where you need something chopped, cut, cracked, or opened!

As you can see below, there is more to this weapon than just shears on a handle.  There are grooves and angles that allow you to easily crack nuts, open bottle caps, crush garlic, etc…

Naturally, I had to see for myself what this guy can really do.  First I tried it on newspapers.  A whole stack.  It sliced like a single sheet of notebook paper.  These shears are so sharp!
IMG_8745
Next I tried cutting through fabric.  I sliced through EIGHT layers of fabric as if it was one.  I didn’t even have to apply a lot pressure.  I think these are designed so as to have a forceful impact with minimal effort.  These are very nice on small women’s hands used to doing delicate things.
IMG_8746
Then I took to some frozen chicken.  Straight out of the freezer, I couldn’t chunk these apart even by wacking them on the counter, but these Smart Sizzors chopped them up like nothing.  Completely frozen chicken.
IMG_8752
Lastly, I pulled out a pair of earrings that I love, but have never worn out because they’re just a little too big and dangly.  I’ve wanted to pare them down for the longest time, but didn’t quite know how to attack it.  These shears clipped the wire like a piece of cake, but what I most loved was the control I had, and the pointed tip that let me snip into small spaces.

I’m in awe!  I really am.  I feel armed and ready for whatever I’ll need to tackle.
These would make a fantastic Christmas gift for anyone with a kitchen.  Any homeowner would love a pair of these to take care of household needs.  AnySharp carries several more products that specialize in sharpening knives, garden tools, or anything with a blade.  Wouldn’t you love to bring some life back into your favorite knife set?

Have you noticed all of my food/cooking-related reviews lately?!  Fall is the season to COOK!  I think it is the colder weather that brings us inside and makes us more acutely aware of all the glorious scents and flavors of fall cooking since we’re gathering more often around the kitchen stove instead of the backyard grill.  With so many things to cook, and so many recipes to create, I need good tools and equipment!  As I’ve been more frequently using our knives and blades lately, I’ve been noticing how dull they are becoming, and how even a pizza cutter doesn’t last forever.  When I was asked to review this Demi Lune 13 3/4″ Pizza Cutter by Epica, I instantly (said yes and) thought of all the things I could do with this!

Chop nuts, slice bread, mince herbs, chop vegetables, slice fruit, etc.  This is not a one-trick pony.  I’m dying to try using it as a sort of chopper/mixer/scooper blade on some ice cream, just like Cold Stone Creamery. But let’s focus on its awesomeness as a pizza cutter.  This thing is huge.  So wide at 13 3/4″ long, that it can slice practically any pizza from crust to crust with one swoop.  Its 3″ tall, so deep dishes aren’t even a problem.  We found that it was actually too long for our pans with lips/edges like in the picture below, and we couldn’t get to both crust edges in one swoop, but we agreed that this weapon would go to town on a pizza stone.
IMG_7870
So sturdy!  This guy is made of heavyweight 18/0 stainless steel.  The handle is smooth and easy to grasp, and though it might look hard to clean, its completely dishwasher safe.  I only wish it came with a cover!  This is a weapon of mass destruction!  Where am I going to store this?!
IMG_7856
The best part about using a demi lune blade on pizza is that it doesn’t drag toppings down into the cut, or pull them along like a hand cutter does.  My biggest beef with our hand cutter is that when the pizza is on a round pan and you’re trying to slice it up 8 ways, the round blade reaches the edge of the round pan and the crust edges never get chopped.  I usually have to bring out the kitchen shears after that and finish the job.  This Epica blade attacks the crust with ease, and the sharp almost-90° corners can easily reach those difficult crust edges.
What a fun thing to have in the kitchen!
You can find this product on Amazon HERE for less than $10!

My sister just got accepted into BYU!!  I am so stinkin excited for her to experience all the awesome/exciting/challenging things about college!  Dang, college was fun!

images

She still has a few months before she leaves, but we’re starting to round up all the things that she’ll need for dorm living, and we’re checking out all the great things at Dormco.com!  Little Sister and I looked the whole site over, and decided on one useful kitchen set: a Rice & Pasta College Cooker – Equipped Version

I1-2-9-GMRC500-2

This is so nifty!  I think back to my college days, and anything microwavable was what I grabbed first.  There’s not always the time, energy, or stove access to boil up pasta or rice on a dime, so this is a treasure.  You just throw the ingredients in, fill with enough water to cover the pasta or rice, top with the lid, and toss the container in the microwave.

IMG_3127 IMG_3130

The 8-cup capacity is well over enough space for the typical one-serving dishes, but spacious enough to feed your roommates too.  Included in this set are measuring cups and spoons, the steamer insert, a server paddle, and a most useful pasta measure!  I ALWAYS guess wrong on pasta, so the circular guide on how much spaghetti to dump in is completely useful.

IMG_3128

We did a trial run of some pasta at home this weekend while I was visiting, and our shells turned out great!  My little brothers were claiming dibs on it when we pulled it out.  Little sister is already an excellent cook, but this set will only simplify her cooking routine and come in handy on many occasions!

C2-1-3-EPB1800-2  17-piece Personal College Blender: $36.96
