Lamp Post BOO!

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Sometimes I struggle at holiday decorating.  Only because it’s so time consuming and I feel like I don’t have much time.  Anyone else feel that way?  Okay.  So I’ll level with you.  It might also have something to do with the fact that sometimes I think that I’m not incredibly crafty.  Okay.  I think that often.  Like I’m not all thumbs when it comes to crafts, but I’m pretty particular and need things to look just right.  One minor imperfection and I can’t let it go.  Whenever I see said completed craft that looks kind of strange or has a tiny blemish I cringe.  Of course I don’t cringe at other people’s crafts.  I don’t notice their mistakes.  Only my own.  I’m an insecure crafter.  It’s a complex.  I must overcome.  Anyone else have this problem?

So I struggle with time and being an insecure crafter.  I really do want to be more secure in my crafting abilities.  Really I do.  Maybe I need lessons?  Probably.  Crafters Anonymous?  Definitely.  I see all of these cute ideas everywhere.  Tons and tons of cute ideas.  I pin all of them right here on Pinterest, but then I never do them.  Or if I start the project I never finish it.  I’m airing all of my guilt today, right?!  My name is Tara and I’m a craftaholic.  I bet there is a group for that… Honestly I do need to be better at finishing the projects that I start.  It’s a wonder that I can actually sit down at the computer and type blog postings when I’m such a spaz when it comes to everything else.  You laugh?  I may have the focus for some things, but with crafty projects… Well, I turn into that dog Dug from the movie “UP”.  It’s true.  Maybe you are totally laughing, because you think that my blog postings are exactly like that???  Oh my.  I really am insecure.  But I’m working on my insecurities.  Both craft related and non.  I’ve decided that the first step (remember I’m a psychology educated gal) in the process would be simple crafts.  If I do something simple then I will finish it and it will be perfect because it will be really difficult to mess up something so simple.  It’s that simple.

Here is THE easiest DIY Halloween yard decoration that I’ve ever made.

Seriously the easiest.

It’s dedicated to all the Dugs in the world.

I give you…

The Lamp Post Ghost Tutorial!

In front of our house we have an ugly light post.  I’m sure it was beautiful in its time.  Now it’s just quite dingy looking.  It’s super old.  Original to the neighborhood when others have been replaced.  The lamp doesn’t even work so I’m not sure exactly why it still in front of our house.  Maybe I should be digging it up…  One day we will just replace it?  Maybe?  Probably.  In its prime it was a gas lamp.  Then it was converted to electric way before we moved in.  However, the “electrician” (previous home owner who was a medical doctor and had no idea about how to be an electrician) didn’t do a very good job.  It quit working so the “electrician” then cut the line and left this random wire in the basement that operates the lamp post only it plugs into nothing.  No outlet.  No switch.  No lit lamp post.  So you get the idea.  We are left with an antique lamp post that has absolutely no use just standing in our front yard.

See?  It’s not the most beautiful thing in the world.

BUT recently when I looked at that old lamp post I saw something different.

I saw a ghost.

So I decided to create one.  A lamp post ghost.  So simple that even a 6 year old could do it.

And it can be created in record time.  By the 6 year old.

To create the ghost I purchased 3 yards of white drapery fabric.  It was on clearance at less than $3 a yard.

You could just as easily use a white sheet.

Banjo used a black Sharpie to make the ghost’s eyes and mouth.  Then we just threw the whole thing over the lamp post and there you have it:

Our Lamp Post BOO!

You can transform your own lamp post for Halloween and it will look super dandy.

42nd Street Prints {Giveaway} – Closed

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am a sucker for throw pillows! Especially when they have a cute uplifting message on them. They are such great conversation starters and really can add a lot to a plain room. The more throw pillows the better…I think 😉

42nd Street Prints offers the cutest throw pillows! I love how fun and different they all are. Like the XO pillows! I am swooning over those!! I am thinking I may need to snag a few of those for our guest bedroom.

Screen Shot 2014-06-24 at 9.44.53 PM

How stinking cute is this ‘Lets make out’ throw pillow. This definitely needs to be added to someone’s master bedroom! Not only are 42nd Street prints super fun but they are affordable and she is constantly adding new items to her shop.

Each pillow is made with 100% polyester filler and 100% cotton shell. They come with a zipper on the side for easy removal for any type of cleaning. That is so important for me with a dog and sometimes make up just happens to get on it. I can simply just remove the cover and throw it in the wash. But remember, cotton shrinks, so I recommend hanging it dry.

I  am currently redoing my guest room and want it to be more inviting and welcoming. This ‘STAY AWHILE’ throw pillow is just the right touch. I love how original this throw is and the crisp white look it has. If I ever change up the colors in the room (again hehe) this pillow will be able to stick around.

42nd Street Prints is giving away one of these ‘STAY AWHILE’ throw pillows to one lucky reader. And for those who just can’t wait to get there hands on one of these darling throws, then she is being kind enough to give 10% off using the code ‘dandygiveaway’  So hurry and snag yourself some darling throws!

Walls By Mur {Giveaway} – Closed

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Remember the good old days of wall paper and the hassle of tearing it down? Yah, good thing those days are long gone. But, the patterns of those wall papers made such a fun accent walls. It’s just not fun to put it up or tear it down. Anyone else agree?

Screen Shot 2014-06-23 at 9.24.30 PM

Walls By Mur has fixed this problem! I am loving the accent walls and simply by adding a removable decal from Walls By Mur fixes all your wall paper worries.

“We provide innovative, removable wall designs to enhance the look of a home, business or set. Mur’s Removable Adhesive Wall Patterns are an affordable, less permanent alternative to paint and wallpaper. By combining any of our color and sizing options you can create your own pattern or replicate one of our many designs. Our designs are not limited to walls; they also bring the perfect punch of excitement to dressers, bookshelves, cabinets, or smaller spaces.”

I love this concept of removable wall decals, as I am currently a renter. Our landlord is kind enough to let us paint our walls, but sometimes painting a whole room one color can get a little boring. These decals are perfect! I can simply put them on any wall/item of furniture and then when we are ready to move out I can easily just remove them and the house is back to how we got it.

Screen Shot 2014-06-23 at 9.25.07 PM

It is so easy to apply their decals. Make sure the surface is clean and dry, then peel off the backing. Apply the decal to the spot you are wanting it to be on, with the squeegee (provided) , smooth out the decal of any bumps or bubbles. If it isn’t how or where you want it, simply remove the decal and try again.  How stinkin easy is that?!!

Screen Shot 2014-06-23 at 9.25.29 PM

Walls By Mur offers large and mini decals. Which is fabulous for bigger areas or smaller furniture. They are extremely affordable, especially compared to other decal stores. I love that not only are they great quality but they are reasonably priced.

Walls By Mur is giving away one of their ‘mini decals’ to a Dandy Giveaway winner!! Be sure to enter so you can add that little pop to your home!

Cutting Edge Stencils {Giveaway} – Closed

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

The way for a house to feel like a home, for me, is to decorate it a way that represents you! My husband and I have moved every summer then come back to Utah and find a new house to live in for 8 months. So the joys of renting come with a lot of rules. Most of our houses we were allowed to paint, but I knew we would be leaving in a few short months, so why bother putting all the time and effort into it. Well, this time we are actually keeping the house we are living in and enjoying it longer then 8 months!! I was stoked! That meant being able to put time into our little house to make it ours!

Cutting Edge Stencils is AMAZING! Seriously guys! I was always scared of stenciling since my good friend had a bad experience with it. So I started to look into decals and just couldn’t find any I liked. Cutting Edge Stencils has a so many stencils to choose from that I sat in front of my computer for a couple days trying to pick one out I wanted to use in my house.

Greg Swisher and Jana Makaeva created Cutting Edge Stencils to be simple and easy to use for any “DIY-er” They love the concept of doing/redoing furniture and other items yourself. Adding a Cutting Edge Stencil is an easy way to spice up anything!

Instead of just sharing a bunch of facts, I am going to let you into my home and tell you how using a Cutting Edge Stencil went for me 🙂

This is the wall you see right when you walk into my living room. Welcome! We have two big windows that let in gorgeous light but this dark red wall was just sucking it all up. So, I knew it was the perfect space to use my Cutting Edge Stencil.

I picked out the Tamara Trellis Moroccan stencil and it came with everything I would need to make it look fab! The kit came with my stencil, that seriously was massive! And a top part stencil for the ceiling and hard to get spots. A small paint roller, detailed stenciling instructions, a leveler, and a small paint brush to get those hard spots.

I then watched the instruction video. I was determined for this to turn out perfect! I ended up watching a few of their videos 1. because they are so short and 2. they explain everything so well that I knew it wouldn’t hurt to get some more practice.

Here are the videos that I watched:

Watch them! They will save you so many mistakes and time!

I primed my wall first (3 coats to get red of that dark maroon color) and then called a friend over, turned on some music (actually Disney channel for the baby haha) and then went to town!

My friend that helped me was the one who had a horrible experience with stenciling. She was amazed at how easy Cutting Edge Stencil was. There was no bleeding (which was the part we were nervous for) and we finished this in 2 nights, spending about 4-5 hours each night on it.

I used a gorgeous Turquoise color (yep, the color was called Turquoise haha how original!) And I kept the background the white primer color. I am so amazed and excited with the finishing product! I am trying to figure out what else I want to stencil in my house. I am thinking my bedroom is next hehe. I was really nervous to do this because I am a very impatient person when it comes to crafting. I tear the tape off to soon or put the picture up before it’s even dry. With Cutting Edge Stencils, it dries so quickly that there is no waiting around for that first layer to dry. We just kept going and were sad when we couldn’t finish it in one night (babies get really tired after 10:00. hehe oops 🙂 )

I am thinking for my next room I want to use one of these stencils. I actually have about 5 others I am having a hard time choosing from, but I’ll save you my obsession 😉

So here’s the amazing part! Cutting Edge Stencils is giving away one stencil up to $50 value! Guys, that’s way more then half of their collection. You’re going to know exactly how I feel when I say I have about 4839 favorites!! So start entering below!

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Cards

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

IMG_6369Every year I battle the Christmas card clutter.  I struggle to find a way to keep all our cute cards on display without having them take over our counter.  This year, I’m ready for the mass of adorable family pictures and seasons greetings after putting together a clock-like clutter control decoration that is perfect for holding Christmas cards.

First I set out painting solid wood clothespins.  I think painting these up in Christmas colors and prints would be darling!

Wood glue and clamps do just the trick.

Start arranging them around the a circular piece of wood.  I used particleboard and shaved a circle using a Dremel.

Add watch hands with or without a working motor behind it, and start pinning!

Wouldn’t a clothespin wreath in Christmas colors and designs be just darling?!  I’m so tempted to make another one Santa and reindeer style!

Storage Wardrobe from Brylane Home {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Dear friends, remember the last giveaway we did with Brylane Home, and how there were SO many comments left about how great a certain storage wardrobe would be?  I listened and…good news, today there is one being given away!!  This is going to be a two-part post featuring the some of the fabulous furniture, appliances, and storage options from Brylane Home!  (The Part II giveaway will be revealed next month!)

brylanehomeThis Fall has been all about clearing out, throwing out, and tidying up!  I’ve been tossing things right and left, taking bags off to donate, and I’ve made a FORTUNE off of things I’ve sold on eBay, haha!  It has felt great, and a big motivator to get our mud room in order was this snazzy 6-Drawer Storage Wardrobe from Brylane Home.  See how this all started:

Yikes.  I know.  It has really become a dump-all, and this room often gets neglected and rarely put back together.  The solution:

71D9BTlbt6L._SL1100_Glorious.  I thought this would be perfect for the amount of space and stuff I wanted to keep in the mudroom.

IMG_6502I was surprised by how compact everything arrived, and I wondered how it turn out to be a full-size dresser, but it all turned out ok.  I probably spent 20-30 minutes assembling this guy.  Everything was labeled well, and the instructions were clear.  Below, the drawers may look flimsy, but a square solid piece fits in the bottom and helps keep its structure sound. IMG_6512

I was originally attracted to the lightweight frame and the pull-out drawers that won’t smash little fingers.  My toddlers can pull out the drawers, pick out their shoes, and put everything away without any loud drawer-smashing or finger-pinching.

We went with black because of the scuffs and markings that inevitably adorn anything light-colored in this house, and so far, its done a great job holding up and looking nice.

What a difference!  I LOVE this storage unit!  I love how it tidies up our dumping ground, and how easy it will be to later use it in other spaces, like as a clothing dresser in a bedroom, or as a craft stash.  Can you picture in your mind just such a use for this?

61qnG-X4bcL._SL1100_Enter below to win your own 6-drawer storage wardrobe!

This is originally $89.99, but on sale now for $59.99, and it also comes in white.  You can purchase it at www.Brylanehome.com, or on Amazon HERE.

Good luck!  And if you don’t win this one, remember another awesome storage surprise is being given away next month!

Whimseybox {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

About a month ago, a crafty friend of mine from down the street mentioned that she’d love to get a group together for a craft night sometime.  Since my husband works an evening shift twice a week, I offered to “host” it at my house after my boys were asleep and asked what I could do to help.  She came up with a few ideas, and we decided on making a cute pendant necklace.  After I did some Pinterest research (my favorite!), I told her that I’d be happy to stop in and pick up the materials since I’d be near the craft store the next day.

I had my list of items and figured that I wouldn’t be very long, so my husband waited with the boys in the van while I ran in.  I ran in, took one look around, and was completely lost.  I started walking toward the jewelry section but didn’t find anything that I needed.  I sort of aimlessly walked the aisles, praying that the materials would start screaming my name so I could end this experience, before asking someone for help.  Unfortunately, they couldn’t find the things that I needed either, and I ended up leaving the store empty-handed.

It’s obviously not a situation I’d like to find myself in again anytime soon, but I had a great time at the craft night that evening (using the materials that my friend found when she went to the exact same craft store the next day…) and I really do like making things that I pin on Pinterest.  My frugal side also screams to me each time I purchase any sort of home décor and think that I’m sure I could create something instead of purchasing it.

In my quest to find the best monthly subscription boxes over the past several months, I came across the Whimseybox website.  One of their ads looked something like the following:

Say what??  This ad was made just for me!  I had to look into this monthly subscription a little further…

“Get started making again with our $15/month craft subscription box to the best in DIY and craft.  You will receive a new DIY craft project each month with the materials and instructions necessary. Follow our tips and techniques or make it your own way.”

I received my first Whimseybox last month, and I loved the project — DIY peppermint lip balm!!  This kit included beeswax, castor oil, peppermint essential oil, stirring sticks, a pipette, 3 tins, and an instructional card — along with a 5 x 7 art print and a reusable box.  Everything I needed was right in the box, and I didn’t have to travel to the craft store 20 minutes away to only come out empty-handed.  I was able to make up three of these lip balms one afternoon during our quiet/nap time, and I have them ready to deliver to three women I visit each month from our church.

This was a fun activity that made me feel crafty and not frustrated at all!  While it’s perfect for a novice crafter like myself, I’m sure that there are some ways to spiff up these lip balms for those crafters with more experience.  🙂

In addition to the monthly subscription Whimseybox, the website is just introducing their new Whimseybox SHOP that offers free shipping through the end of July!  You can purchase the same DIY Peppermint Lip Balm box that I received, and there are other craft kits and craft materials available in categories such as paper crafting, jewelry making, sewing, scrapbooking, home décor, and bath and body.
