Simply 7 Snack Squad {Giveaway} – Closed

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

In high school my husband had a thing for fancy chips. As a matter of fact he had one friend whose house he loved to hang out at above all others because their pantry was constantly stocked with great chips that were all sorts of interesting and different flavors. The first time I saw Simply 7 chips, all I could think of was how excited my husband was going to be with the variety of chips and chip flavors coming to our door.

Simply 7 is a lot more than your average snack company, rather than deep fried mystery ingredients they’ve made a point to make their snack ingredients both pronounceable, and tasty. The chips are all natural, gluten free and have about half the fat of regular potato chips, they also have more than 30 chips in a serving. Am I hearing bells for a winner? You bet! Camille thought so too, you can read her awesome review of Simply 7 here.

So Simply 7 created the Snack Squad to keep all us chip lovers in the loop with their great products. By signing up you can be sent member only coupons, birthday surprise, product updates and sometimes even prizes (like a personalized Simply 7 Winners Box!)

I was sent a Snack Squad Winners Box to review. It comes with winnery things like four bags of Simply 7 chips, chip swag like a bag clip, a dry erase magnet, and a dry erase marker, and best of all a customized chip bag, complete with your name, photo, and bio – which I’m not going to lie, is pretty sweet.

Since my customized bag was for Sea Salt chips, I thought I had better pick a picture of me at the sea! (FYI – The customized bag does not contain chips)

Reading over their website I thought all the healthy stuff sounded great, but how did they actually taste and really compare to your regular chips?

Simply 7 Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Chips

The first bag I tried was the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Chips. They are light and textured and kind of reminded me of Bugle Chips (you know, the ones you put on your fingers and pretend you’re a witch… I’m not the only one who still does that am I?) I think these chips taste a little more like garlic than red pepper and they definitely are not spicy flavored, but they are tasty, especially paired with hummus! Ha.

Simply 7 Sea Salt Pomegranate Chips

These were a bit bigger of a deviation from your standard bag of chips and I was a little hesitant to dig in, I just don’t generally think of sweet fruit mixing with chips. They were different. They were really light weight, I would say down right fluffy for a chip. The sweet pomegranate flavor was faint and you mostly taste it at the end of your chip, and the more you eat the less peculiar they taste. Have any of you ever had those veggie straws? I think you can find them at Costco? They reminded me a lot of those, light, salty initially with a hint of flavor at the end. If you’re looking for something a little wild these might be the chips for you.

Simply 7 Cheddar Quinoa Chips

These chips were firmer than the two previous kinds, kind of hearty sun chip. I thought the flavor was amazing, you can taste a little bit of the nuttyness from the quinoa but I thought it actually went really well with the cheddar flavor (who knew?). Actually, I’m a big fan of the flavor of quinoa to being with so that might be tainting my judgment a little. You know what else is kind of amazing about these chips, a single serving has 9 grams of protein… so I can pretty much call this a post work our food, right?

Simply 7 Jalapeno Lentil Chips

I saved my favorite for last. I thought the flavor of these were amazing, but they have a little bit of a kick to them so if you’re not into spicy food these probably aren’t for you. If you like your salsa medium spicy and above I invite you to dig in. These chips are light weight and seem to be on the airy side, they’re curved which makes them great for dip and they’re spicy but not so much so that you have to drown your mouth out with milk after eating a handful.

Simply 7 has some simply great snacks and if you’re looking to mix up your pantry a big I would suggest adding a bag or three. If you want to keep in the loop and get some awesome swag along the way then you’ve got to join the Snack Squad. You can also find these great chips at your local grocery store using the store locator.

And the moment you’ve all been reading for. 🙂 Simply 7 has offered a Winner Box, complete with custom personalized chip bag to one lucky Dandy Snack Squad Winner.

I bet the huge majority of us stay-at-home moms are big snackers.  One of the great things about being home with the kids all day is being able to eat at home and always have access to the kitchen.  I have noticed, however, that I can completely skip meals while snacking all day, so I have to pay attention to what I’m actually eating.  As long as they are healthy snacks, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing at all.

Simply7Logo_349_HRes

Simply7 is a brand of remarkably delicious chips made from pomegranates, hummus, and lentils.  Uber healthy, right?  But before I even looked at the labels, I first wanted to see how they tasted, and not be swayed by just how nutritious or not they actually were.  I was sent this huge box of assorted varieties–

Pomegranate Chips: White Cheddar, Black Pepper, and Sea Salt

Hummus Chips: Spicy Chili Pepper, Sea Salt, Roasted Red Pepper, and Tomato Basil

Lentil Chips: Creamy Dill, Sea Salt, Jalapeno, and Brushchetta

IMG_9456

I first pulled out a fairly basic variety–Sea Salt Lentil Chips (below).  They were delicious!  Paired with a tub of hummus, I think I ate half the bag in one sitting.  The lentil chips look and taste air-popped and aren’t greasy in the least.  They are the perfect size and shape to scoop with dip and one chip can fit entirely in your mouth.  That is very important to me!

IMG_9458

I was so pleased with how great these tasted (and I am NOT a chip person), and even 10x more impressed to read the ingredients label.  Only four ingredients: lentil flour, potato starch, safflower oil, sea salt.  Very impressive!

See, Simply7Snacks has a few core standards:

Zero grams trans fat and no cholesterol
No artificial colors or flavors
No additives or preservatives
Gluten free ingredients
All natural recipes
Simple ingredients
Simply delicious

chip1

The whole family has really enjoyed digging into these.  Above and to the left are the White Cheddar Pomegranate Chips.  The adults in the house thought the pomegranate chips were just a little weird.  The slightly sweet fruitiness paired with salty and cheesy was just a fuzzy mix, or rather just an odd base to start with, but pomegranate-lovers might be all over these.  Plus, my kids think they’re great.  I don’t mind a bit if my kids want a handful of these for a snack or with a meal because they’re so dang healthy!  40% less fat than potato chips.

The Bruschetta Lentil Chips (above, right) are my all-time favorite!!  I’ve completely hidden these away from everyone else.  I don’t want to share a single chip.

chip2

The bags are a great size, by the way.  Probably smaller than a typical Doritos bag, but large enough for several people taking large servings.  One bag on the table with a pot of chili was just right for four of us to down.  The Jalepeno variety is very crunchy, not greasy, and it has a great spicy kick.

The hummus chips are a little more dense, less air-popped, and have more texture to them.  Above, and to the right, are the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus chips.  They are great by themselves and have great flavor because of the garlic, onion, and paprika, but eaten with homemade spinach artichoke dip is a-mazing!

This just in: NEW Quinoa chips!  Sign me up!

Bottom line, these are really delicious, really healthy, and I totally recommend trying all of these.  I’m so glad my local Shaw’s carries them.  See the store locator to find the nearest place Simply7 is sold.

One winner will win a huge box of these Simply7 chips!  11 different varieties!

I recently learned that my grandma has been diagnosed with Diabetes, and because of it affecting a family member so close to me, I’ve really been thinking a lot about the illnesses, ailments, allergies, etc. that other people have to deal with on a daily and meal-by-meal basis.  How exhausting it must get!  I really feel for those of you who must tirelessly find food alternatives and make replacements in your own diet, or for your children.  I feel for your frustrations, and though I don’t really know what it is like, I’m hoping that introducing some of you to this delicious brand of food and snacks, called Kay’s Naturals, will help to offer ideas of what options are available!

kays-naturals-logo1_1Kay’s Naturals supports diabetes self-management through nutrition and fitness.  Their line of fifteen crunchy snacks and cereals are diabetes-friendly, high-protein, gluten-free, and pretty delicious!  Their special formula of 33% soy protein, 10% fiber and 33% net carbohydrates is a great for fitness enthusiasts—especially those with diabetes.

Here’s what we had a chance to try:

IMG_5659

White Cheddar Kruncheaze: I really like that these don’t feel greasy.  Big plus on the flavor.  I also think that the white color is great for picky eater kids who are fearful of colorful foods.  White is always a winner.  The natural cheese seasoning comes off in your hand when you crunch it–yummy 🙂

IMG_5660

Veggie Pizza Puffs:  These are round crunchy balls a little bigger than that berries in Kapt Krunch berry cereal.  They are dried crunchy like croutons, and just as flavorful.  The baby loves these!

IMG_5664

Crispy Parmesan Protein Chips: Again, I thought these would be great for kids.  They have a good Parmesan taste and there seemed to be less crumbs in the bag, as in a tougher consistency that keeps them from crumbling easily.

IMG_5667

Jalapeno Honey Mustard Pretzel Sticks:  I saved these for last, guessing that I would like them the most, and I was right.  Love these.  They are a lot more dense than the other products, naturally, because they are pretzels, and the consistency is just right.  They have a great mustard coating and lots of flavor.  They are GREAT with hummus!

Some other delicious products from Kay’s Naturals include some cereals and specifically their breading:

Check out the rest of their fifteen crunchy snacks and cereals–all diabetes-friendly, high-protein, gluten-free, and pretty delicious!

El Pinto Salsa {Giveaway}–CLOSED

I don’t know about you, but the thing I did the most over the long holiday weekend was eat!  There are a few foods that I can eat and eat and only stop once I realize I feel physically ill because I’ve eaten so much. Kettlecorn is one, Trail Mix is another, and chips and guacamole or salsa is the third. And when you find a really good salsa, it’s even harder to stop. My new favorite salsa is from a little Mexican restaurant in Yucaipa, CA, called Casa Trejo. But this salsa from a big Mexican restaurant  in New Mexico called El Pinto is a close second!

logo

The story of El Pinto Salsa starts with the El Pinto restaurant  in 1962 in Albuquerque, NM . According to the website, it started as a one room restaurant with a few tables and a small kitchen. Today, the restaurant seats over 1,200 guests at a time in one of five patios, three indoor dining rooms, and a cantina. The restaurant sits on twelve acres, which includes a 5,000 square foot manufacturing facility to produce salsa and sauces for retail. It is the largest New Mexican restaurant in the state of New Mexico. I have never been, but you can be sure the next time I’m in Albuquerque I’ll stop by!

restaurant

In 1994, brothers Jim and John took over the family restaurant and in 2000, they began the El Pinto Foods division so people nationwide could enjoy their salsas and sauces.  They use 120 tons of chiles a year, make 2,000 cases a day and have the capacity to make 3-4 million jars a year in their 8,000 square foot salsa production facility which is attached to the El Pinto restaurant! Crazy, right? The brothers are very particular about the way their chiles are grown and processed so they consistently ensure the best quality of sauces and salsas.

giveaway

I was sent this awesome 6-pack of salsas. The 6-pack includes 4 single serve packs of Medium Salsa and Medium Green Chile sauce, 1 bottle of Medium Roasted Jalapeno Salsa, 1 Medium Roasted Green Chile Sauce, 1 Medium Green Chile Sauce and 1 Medium Salsa. The package arrived in a big box filled with lots of padding so there wasn’t any worry about breakage. The labels on the sauces are crisp and clean and clearly show what to expect inside. We used the Medium Green Chile sauce in a recipe for Pork Chile Verde and we could taste the difference the El Pinto sauce made compared to our usual store brand “green sauce.”  It gave the recipe a bolder, richer flavor and really brought out the delicious chile taste. The medium salsa packs just enough punch to be spicy but not so much that my mouth is on fire and watering. I can definitely taste the roasted pepper flavor in the Roasted Jalapeno salsa.  My favorite was the Medium salsa, and I liked it at room temperature. Normally that would be a problem as most salsas need to be refrigerated, but with the single serve packs, I could eat salsa whenever and wherever I was.

lunch

I typically have sweet potatoes for lunch, but I was getting bored of just spray butter and salt and pepper on my potatoes, so one day I jazzed it up with some El Pinto green chile sauce and some leftover black beans and corn and the result was amazing! Another night during the show I was just in (Anything Goes), I brought some individual salsa packs and shared them backstage with my friends in the dressing room.  Everyone enjoyed the salsa and said it had good flavor. Luckily, we didn’t spill any salsa on our costumes or we would have been in big trouble!

backstageI would defnintely recommend El Pinto salsa to everyone.  El Pinto Salsas and Sauces are available nationwide in stores including Wal-Mart, Kroger, Albertson’s, HEB and Costco. To find a store near you that carries El Pinto, you can use their Store Locator. Or, you can order your salsa and sauce online and have it shipped directly to you!  And in case you’re wondering what to do with your salsa or green chile sauce (besides eat it with some delicious chips), El Pinto has posted a ton of Recipes–including some fan favorites–on their website here: http://www.elpinto.com/recipes.

TWO winners will receive the same 6-pack of salsas that I received!

I’m a SAHM.  No, I’m not thinking Stay-At-Home-Mom.  I’m that too, but I’m also a Snacking-at-All-Hours-Mom.  I will always opt for lots of mini-meals throughout the day vs. three big ones.  When the kids eat, I eat, and sure I think it keeps my metabolism up, but sometimes I don’t always make the best snacking choices.  I’ve found a super great snack food that I don’t feel bad about eating absolutely all day: Bare Fruit Apple Chips.
logo
Ok, I’ve tried dehydrated apples before, and knew that I loved them.  I remember eating off that bag in a few days, so I was excited about trying another brand.  These are so different than the ones I have tried before, but so much better!  They taste much sweeter and crunchier, like real chips.
IMG_3685
That’s why I was even more surprised to afterwards reading the packaging label and seeing that the only ingredients are organic apples and organic cinnamon.  No way!  These are just too delicious to have no other additive ingredients or flavors.  Muy impressed.
IMG_3687
The peel makes it feel like I’m eating an actual apple, which is actually exactly all it is.  With all these peels, I figured these have got to be chocked full of fiber.  Its true–
And get this: there are 30 Washington apples in each bag!
IMG_3690
So many times this week, I’ve been tempted to pull out the chocolately sweets or a bowl of cereal, but instead went for my mega bag of apple chips and been so glad I did!  My sweet tooth is satisfied and I’m eating apples instead.  Win.

Oy, the battles have begun.  The bartering with my toddlers to get just one broccoli tree down their throat.  Today I even made a deal–eat three baby carrots for one cookie.  They both used to be such good veggie eaters!  I used to be able to open a can of mixed veggies, dump it in front of them, and they’d chow down.  Now “Rocket” follows me around the house saying “cake, cake, cake” and holding out cake mixes and muffin tins.

images

I am completely unashamed about my tactics to get more goodness in them.  Mix a little of this in that, dip it in ranch, throw some cheese on it, etc.  Still, it takes a concentrated effort to disguise some of the nutrients I know they need, and I wish it was easier.  I was pretty excited about these little cookies from Bitsy’s Brainfood, especially after looking at their kid-friendly website, which even has some fun printables to color.  These snacks are made from organic ingredients, and all start out with organic wheat flour.

IMG_4078

We were sent one of each of the four flavors, and they all smell great!  Bitsy has done a great job in enhancing the more preferred positive scent and masking the veggie smell.  The look and smell like fun cookies!  Naturally, we busted these open immediately and started looking for letters:

IMG_4082

Here’s what we think:

Zucchini Gingerbread Carrot: delicious, naturally.  With ingredients like that, you naturally think of carrot cake, zucchini bread, and gingerbread cookies, so you know you can’t go wrong.

Chocolate Orange Beet: practically an adult-person cookie.  I could eat these all night sitting in front of So You Think You Can Dance, and feel great about it.  A little reddish in color, but not too crazy to ward off colored-food-fearing kids.

Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin:  See, each one I try is a new favorite.  I think I like these the best so far because they remind me of that delicious cereal, Cracklin Oat Bran.  They seem a little more solid and crunchy, and less crumbly than the others.  Also displayed in the number of fully intact letters in the bag.  Less partials.

Lemon Broccoli:  Ok, I could probably taste the masked veggie more in this than in the other three varieties, but if you’re not thinking “broccoli”, you probably wouldn’t even notice.  My kids sure didn’t.  Look at them. Untitled-1

Here is why these are so fantastic:

  • They are an excellent source of Vitamins A, B12, B6, D3, and Folic Acid
  • They are an excellent source of Omega-3 EPA and DHA–20% of the Daily Value for a combination of EPA and DHA.
  • Good source of Calcium and Iron.  No GMOs.
  • Oven baked with real fruits and veggies!

My ONLY recommendation: maybe more vowels?  Making words gets a little tricky when we’re consanant-heavy, but it was still fun to point out letters together 🙂 IMG_4092

If you have a picker eater, a cookie-fiend, or just want to get more wholesome goodness in your kids, this Bitsy’s Brainfood is a great choice!  You can purchase them on Amazon as well as diapers.com, Abe’s Market, and freshdirect.

Green smoothie fan?  Love that super ugly look of that super healthy meal?  Love how you know exactly what goes into it, and its kind of a surprise every time as to what this new concoction will taste like?  We are definitely a green smoothie family.  We can buy a ginormous bag of spinach at Haymarket for $3 and have smoothies every morning for a week.  “Rocket” drinks it like milk, and I love knowing that our bodies are chock full of fruits and veggies first thing in the morning, especially so that I can justify my not-so-healthy choices later on in the day.
hs-logo-no-border
I’m fairly positive that if you are a green smoothie junkie, you’re going to be all over this monthly subscription box called Healthy Surprise.  So how do you get this goodness in you?  You subscribe to a “Starter Box”, “Healthy Box”, or a “Large Box”, depending on what size you would like.  The smallest box starts at $33/month, but this includes 16-20 servings!  The Large Box runs for $99, but that is 48-60 servings, people!  The box ships the same day, and on your doorstep arrives a box of delicious, healthy snacks.  Everything included in the box is vegan, gluten-free, healthy, and delicious.  I can attest to this!  Rest assured, everything has been carefully selected by this criteria, and you won’t be disappointed in the great snacks.  No MSG, no corn, no soy, no gluten, no egg, no shellfish, etc., just good and healthy!
IMG_3445
My first impression when I opened the box was that there was SO much food in there!  Of all the monthly subscription boxes I’ve reviewed, Healthy Surprise has the most food, by far.  These aren’t just tiny sample size portions with a lot of wrapper.  These are substantial, practically full-meal sizes.
IMG_3447
I dug right in and starting enjoying some things I’ve never seen before.  Among the goodies this month were: Beanitos black bean chips, Enjoy Life seed and fruit mix, fruit.0 organic fruit snack, Hail Merry almonds, Hail Merry choco macaroons, Homefree chocolate chip cookies (my boys loved them), a Gopal’s power wrap, a Gopal’s brownie, a Cocomo Joe Green Joebar, a Chi Bar cocoa cherry energy bar, and three Righteouslky Raw chocolates in pure dark, divine mint, and synergy spice.  Yum!
The first thing I consumed was this amazing kale granola (excuse me, “greenola”) which was practically two whole meals of goodness.  And so filling!  Plain, with milk, or on top of yogurt, I was so impressed with how delicious kale can taste.  My thoughts on the Mexican power wraps: wow, holy flavor!  I can’t say I’ve tried or seen anything quite like it.  The choco macaroons were my favorite!  They are slightly dehydrated and such a yummy treat, even if they do look like packed dirt clumps.
 IMG_3449
See, everything included kind of had a different look to it, but everything tasted fantastic!!  Just like green smoothies–don’t let the appearance bother you, and you’ll introduce your taste buds to some fantastic flavors, and have the assurance that what you’re eating is healthy healthy healthy!
How fun to have so many surprises in one product!  It is a surprise as to when your box will show up, its a surprise as to what will be inside, but even more, it will surprise you how much you will enjoy these truly healthy and new, exciting products!  If you have resolved to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle, try these boxes from Healthy Surprise!  I, for one, would love to see what is in store for next month’s box!

YOU might be the lucky winner to find out!  One reader will win a starter box from Healthy Surprise!  ($33 value)  And they ship internationally!

We’re kind of stuck in a rut here with a picky eater in the house.  One of these ruts is a peanut butter sandwich every day for lunch, which “Rocket” will promptly take apart, then lick clean but leave most of the bread and crust.  Drives me crazy.

I tried an experiment today: if I used my new cute little Funbites cutter on his sandwich, would he eat the whole thing?  Behold, he ate it up without a mess!  Crust included!

The idea is genius, and yet so simple!  My kid won’t sit and chomp at a whole apple, but if I slice it up, he’ll gobble it down.  A large carrot vs. a bag of baby carrots?  Same thing.  Bite-size is always more fun, right?  These Funbites cutters are perfect for picky eaters with little mouths!

The high-performance curved blade cutter is pretty heavy duty—pretty substantial.  A Funbites cutter is more than just a cookie cutter because it has the nifty popper top that can pop the food out without you having to poke out the pieces or touch the food at all.

This guy can handle anything!  A tough thick slice of pizza or even a thin slimy piece of cheese!  You can use it on all sorts of foods to make them more appealing to your picky eater.  Try it on omelettes, cantaloupe, deli sandwiches, pizza, watermelon, grilled cheese, turkey burgers, pancakes, tofu, etc.

I might use it for me just as much as for “Rocket”!  I’m thinking of all the cute little bite snacks I can make for parties and lunch dates!

100% made in the USA, BPA free, and hands or dishwasher safe!

You can purchase your own cutter HERE for $12.99 or $22 for two!  Check out their cute heart shaped cutter!  So cute!  Also, use this coupon code FunHolidays for FREE SHIPPING!

I’m trying to make sure to fit nicely in a little red number for this weekend. Cousin’s wedding reception. You know. Lots of family I haven’t seen in ages. At a very fancy location in the city. Anyway, this magazine in my kitchen is not helping with the prospect of that red dress. I’m sooo hungry and could really go for a cheeseburger and fries right about now. After all one can only eat so many baby carrots in one day before her nose starts to twitch. Must step away from the magazine… Help me! Pry it away from my starving little hands! Alright it’s not quite that bad. But I really could use some help on some healthy snack ideas. Ready? Go! You know just to get me through the rest of the week. *wink*
