So it may seem a little rude to be posting about sandals when most of the country is under snow and ice and freezing temperatures, but summer is coming, right? Even though it may not feel like it to some of you, it will be here before we know it, so let’s have some fun day-dreaming about what it will be like when you can wear shorts, t-shirts, bathing suits and sandals…

logo

Okabashi is a sandal company that has been around for 30 years this year and focuses their efforts on making quality products. Their shoes are 100% recyclable, made in the USA and have a 2-year guarantee! Plus, after you’ve worn them to death and are ready for a new pair, you can send them back to the factory and they’ll recycle them for you. Talk about good karma! I reviewed a pair of Women’s Okabashi sandals last June and I loved them! Still love them, actually. You can read my review here, but basically I’ll just say they’re comfy, supportive and come in some super cute designs and colors. And even after a summer of wearing them just about everywhere they still look like new!

feet

But this review isn’t about my Women’s sandals–this time around, I decided to try out the Men’s line! In my last review I mentioned how much I liked the Men’s Indigo sandal in Brown, so I knew this was the sandal I had to try for my husband. Luckily, he agreed they were his favorite pair and that’s what we were sent to review.

Indigo

The sizing is kind of funny–they’re grouped in sizes like size 9.0-10.0, 10.5-11.5, 12.0-13.0, etc.–and he’s right on the border of a 10 and a 10.5. He ordered the 9.0-10.0 because he didn’t want them to be too floppy, but that left his heel right on the edge of the sandal. He doesn’t regret it–they’re still comfy the way they are–but had he known they’d run a little smaller he may have gone with the 10.5-11.5 instead. He says that they are by far the most supportive sandals he’s ever had, though he’s not a huge fan of the nubs on the arch. However, he walked all the way to the pool and back (about a mile) in them while pushing the stroller and had no complaints, so all in all, he says, they’re a great sandal.

Kirk

Okabashi sandals can be purchased online through their website or at other online retailers. The Indigo (Men’s and Women’s) cost $22.99, but certain styles can be purchased on sale right now for as low as $10.99! Or, if you’re feeling lucky, you can enter the giveaway below and try to win a pair of Okabashi Sandals for you OR your Man!

Toobalink {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Confession: I hate cheap toys. You know what I’m talking about–the toys that you get from fast food restaurants, play places and the like–that fall apart or the pieces get lost within days of receiving them. Or the toys that just do nothing–they’re not educational, they don’t foster creativity and they’re usually violent or involve crude humor. I really hate those toys. But here is a toy I can be happy with: Toobalink!

Toobalink

Toobalink is a “construction toy that works with paper towel and toilet tissue tubes.” They are made in the USA, and they are very eco-friendly. I mean, what could be more “green” than a toy that is made in the US and uses recycled cardboard tubes?! The idea for Toobalink came from the Metre Ideas design team of Sara Ebert and Will Sakran, who have industrial design and engineering backgrounds. They wanted to make a toy that had classic roots but was re-imagined for today’s “recycle, reduce, reuse” world. And what a better way to recycle those used up paper towel/toilet paper tubes than to turn them into a toy!

examples

I was sent some samples from the Toobalink Starter Kit. The Starter Kit includes 39 pieces: 12 tube connectors, 4 eight-way connectors, 4 six-way connectors, 6 couplers, 4 joiners, 3 long cardboard tubes, 6 short cardboard tubes, and an instruction booklet with examples of things to build. We were sent maybe half that amount, and were able to build lots of things, so the Starter Kit is MORE than enough to build plenty of things and have a ball designing your own toys. The pieces are well made; the plastic joints and connectors are sturdy and thick, and the foam pieces that hold the cardboard rolls are just sticky/thick enough to hold the paper without it falling off.

prize

My son was SO excited to open the package we received and see his new toys! He is only 3 1/2 and the company suggests Toobalink for ages 5+, but with a little help from me, he was able to build a few things on his own. Some of the connectors were hard for him to snap together, so he definitely needed my help there. Eventually, he started building things on his own, and was so proud when he built a star fish all on his own! He lost interest in the toys after a while, but I think that is more due to his age and attention span than any fault of the toy. The TP/paper towel tubes got smooshed and un-usable after only a few uses, but luckily we always had a new TP roll to replace one when another one died!

Playing

The Toobalink Starter Kit can be purchased online for $34.99, which isn’t bad considering how many pieces are included and how many hours of creative play that will buy you! And once you’re all done with your Toobalink, everything except the foam pieces can be recycled–of course it all comes full circle!

Enter below and TWO winners will receive a Toobalink set!

Ozeri Green Earth Textured Ceramic Nonstick Frying Pan {Review}

Did you know I’m a bird lover?  And does that make me homely?  I really love having parakeets as pets because of their beautiful colors, friendly demeanor, and low-maintenance care.  When we were first looking into getting a bird, I read a lot about how to care for them, and time and time again I read about how it is very important to not keep your bird in the kitchen because of chemicals that can be emitted from cooking spray and especially from non-stick pans.  Weird?  I had no idea that pans could give off harmful fumes that can be detrimental to humans and deathly for birds.  Since then, I’ve been interested in eco-friendly pans that are still easy to care for and affordable.

pan

I was very honored to be able to review the 10″ Ozeri Green Earth Textured Ceramic Nonstick Frying Pan, especially because it is just what I had in mind as far as something green and budget-friendly.  It is 100% PTFE and PFOA free, and made in Germany.

IMG_5882

Read along with me: this pan has a ceramic coating instead of harmful heavy metal.  I think this pan has all the superior qualities of a pan of substantial weight, without being terribly heavy.  The beautiful green is scratch-resistant ceramic, and a friendly reminder that what I’m using is not going to harm me or my family.  It has a terrifically comfortable silicone handle and it can be induction stove safe.  I also think 10″ is just the perfect size for so many cooking needs.  It can hold just the right amount of food to feed a small family.

IMG_5885

Now let me tell you about this textured surface.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen and certainly never owned a pan with an elevated texture like this, so I was interested to see what kind of a difference it makes.  It actually creates air pockets underneath the food that allows air and heat to better surround the food and create an even distribution of heat.  The food cooks faster and more evenly, all without sticking or burning.  The food is unable to bond to the pan, which would only cause food to stick and melt on.  This also makes the pan easy to clean!  I rinsed this once under the sink and practically everything washed away.  I still ran it through the dishwasher (which can be done, though hand washing is preferred), and it came out as squeaky clean as fresh out of the box.

IMG_5891

The textured surface was also GREAT for cooking meat because it held the food up near the top of the pan while I scooped out the grease without the meat crumbles toppling down.  Very useful!  Look at that beautiful browning!  Everything looks cooked to the perfect degree without hot spots or pieces left undone.  I think I just found my favorite pan in the kitchen!

You can purchase your own 10″ Ozeri Green Earth Textured Ceramic Nonstick Frying Pan on Amazon HERE for $33.26.  This pan is also available in a 12-inch and 8-inch size.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Liberty Bottleworks {Giveaway}–CLOSED

What’s the one thing you can’t ever leave the house without? Mine is my water bottle. I started carrying around a water bottle 24/7 in college because one of my roommates swore by it to help lose weight (it works, by the way). Through the years I’ve been through many iterations of bottles. I’ve used and refilled bottled water bottles, I’ve bought really expensive ones from sporting goods stores and I’ve bought really cheap ones from the Dollar Store. But while the bottle has changed, what hasn’t is the fact that I am attached at the hip to my water bottle! So naturally, I was anxious to try out  the only American made metal water bottle by Liberty Bottleworks.

logo

Liberty Bottleworks considers itself a “vintage American company.” Not only do they support jobs in the USA, they pledge 1% of their sales and 1% of their working hours to helping large, local and grass roots efforts, such as the National Park Service, the Conservation Alliance and Keep America Beautiful.  They are also extremely committed to protecting the environment. Their production factory in Yakima, Washington, is filled with state of the art equipment which uses less energy, cleans waste water, and conserves resources. They even melted down their own scrap and made it into more bottles! They are truly Green all the way.

bottles

All Liberty Bottleworks’ bottles are made  from 100% recycled aluminum, are BPA Free, non-toxic and non-leaching. In addition to supporting the environment, Liberty Bottleworks also supports local artists. The Artisan collection features designs by artists who stand behind a cause, and a portion of the sale supports their cause. There are seven pages worth of designs on the Artisan page alone, and all are unique and interesting–there is definitely a bottle for everyone! There are several other cool collections to choose from including the Mass Transit collection, the Topography collection, the Freedom collection, or you can design your own Custom bottle!  They also have a Kids collection with bottles in 12 and 16 ounces and designs kids would like.

bottles_2

I chose to review the Blossom bottle from the Artisan collection. It arrived safely in a small, (most likely) made-from-recycled-materials box. The color of the bottle is beautiful though slightly darker than the picture shown on the website. The design on the bottle is raised, which is due to the cylindrical printers used at Liberty Bottleworks. I like it because it gives me a little something to grip as I constantly drink my water. The metal is smooth and strong; I have dropped it accidentally a few times since receiving it and have yet to see a scratch or a dent. The metal keeps my cold water colder for longer, which I love.

spot

My water bottle goes wherever I go. This is where it lives at night, right next to my bed.

I chose the Sport top as opposed to the Standard cap with an O-ring because I am a straw drinker all the way. I love the easy flip top and the wide loop for holding it when the straw is down. The mouthpiece is smooth and doesn’t leave a weird taste in my mouth like some plastic straws or mouthpieces do. My only complaint would be that while it’s really easy to open the top to fill it, it’s almost too easy and I worry that my kids will pop it open and spill all over themselves or that it will pop off in my purse and soak everything inside. It hasn’t happened yet, but we’ve come close.

me

After a day at the pool, what I need is some cold water!

If you’re not a fan of the straw-type bottles, never fear! Liberty offers both the Sport top (in black only) and a Standard cap with O-ring in seven different colors to match whichever bottle you choose. Bottles can be purchased  in select, local retailers or online. Prices are really reasonable and start at $15 for the 12 oz. Kids bottle, $18 for 16 oz., $19 for 24 oz. and $20 for the 32 oz. bottle. Connect up with Liberty Bottleworks on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube and Twitter, or apply to be a Sustainability Officer and spread the word in your home town!

THREE lucky winners will get to pick a Liberty Bottleworks water bottle of their choice!

Happy 4th of July! I hope you are enjoying your Independence Day with friends, family or loved ones, and that you are celebrating the freedoms we enjoy in this beautiful country of ours. Like Christmas, it’s easy to get caught up in the food, fireworks and fun on 4th of July and forget the real meaning of the holiday. I am grateful for our Founding Fathers who gave us freedom, and for the service men and women who  serve our country and provide the freedoms we enjoy today.  But while you’re all thinking about Red, White and Blue, I’m going to talk about another color: green.

logo

Green Nowâ„¢ Total Skin Care Mist is made by Nixallâ„¢, maker of other all-natural, eco-friendly products. Their products range from household cleansers and disinfectants, to products for animal wound care and grooming, to a “greener” solution for flowers and plants.  All of their products, including the Total Skin Care Mist, are made with Anolyte Water, which is electrolyzed salt water. Anolyte Water is powerful, killing 99.99% of germs and viruses, but is safe enough to use just like water on adults and children. That’s what makes the Green Now Total Skin Care Mist so effective as a refreshing mist.

product

Total Skin Care Mist is kind of like a deodorant, body spray, lotion, aloe and a shower all rolled into one spray. It has a number of uses, such as a refresher after workouts, a skin soother for sun-burn and wind-burn relief, a spray to “set” your make-up to keep fresh all day, or in place of lotion to hydrate, soften and refresh your skin.  Total Skin Care Mist is eco-friendly and all-natural. There are no toxins or harsh chemicals in it and no alcohol, so it leaves no build up on your skin and it is safe for all members of your family, including children. It is the ultimate “green” product!

Green

I was sent the Travel size Total Skin Care Mist, and I used it during the musical I was just in, Anything Goes. Wearing lots of heavy costumes, tons of makeup and lots of hair product while dancing and singing under TONS of hot lights can make a person really sweaty (surprise!), so let’s just say that at the end of each show I was pretty ripe. If I had friends and family come to see the show, I’d need to freshen up before going out to see them so I didn’t make anyone pass out from my stench. I didn’t have time for a shower, however, so I’d spray a few mists on and off I’d go to meet my adoring fans 🙂  The spray is light and cool and leaves my skin feeling soft after a few spritzes. It has a light, clean scent and it dries very quickly, so I don’t feel wet for too long after a spray. I definitely felt refreshed and ready to leave the theater after applying Total Skin Care Mist, and I will make it a requisite in my theater makeup bag in the future!

bag

For now, I plan to store it in my purse for a quick refresher on hot summer days. You can purchase a 2 oz. Travel size for $7.95, and an 8 oz. size for Home or Office for $26.99 online or in select stores. Connect with Green Now on Facebook and Twitter and enter below to try out a Total Skin Care Mist for yourself!

ChicoBag Reusable Bags {Giveaway}–CLOSED

A few years ago, my husband came home from a professional conference loaded down with branded-reusable bags. I put the stash in the back of my car and began using them at the grocery store instead of plastic grocery bags. I felt good about the impact I was making on the environment and was happy that I could fit more groceries into one bag, which meant fewer trips back and forth from the car to the house 🙂 But while I had made it a habit to bring those bags on my weekly grocery shopping trips, I couldn’t get into the habit of bringing just one or two in for a quick run to the store or for a Target trip. I still cringe when I reach the check-out and realize I’ve forgotten a bag, but of course it’s way too late to go back to the car and grab one. I realized I needed a bag that could fit in my purse so it would always be with me and I wouldn’t forget it. Lucky for me, that’s exactly what ChicoBag set out to do!

Logo

ChicoBag makes reusable bags of all shapes and sizes and their goal is to “reduce single-use bag waste by offering compact reusable bags and packs that are designed to be unforgettable.” And let me tell you, these bags are definitely not your standard, branded reusable bags!  Their designs range from classic to contemporary to specially-designed artisan bags, and they are anything but forgettable. They sell bags that are made for shopping, such as the Original bag and the Produce Stand bag, which is a 3-pack  of bags meant to replace single-use plastic bags in the produce aisle. They all stuff into a cute apple-shaped carrying pouch–genius, right?

Shopping

Produce

They also make Cross-Body style bags, Duffel bags, Messenger bags, Daypacks, and Reusable Snack bags, all in cute colors and patterns. Also, several of their bags and sacks are made from their patented rePETeâ„¢ fabric, which means it is made using recycled materials. I love that they’ve found one more way to keep the earth clean and reuse the materials we’ve been given. But I think my favorite collection is the Halloween collection. How fun would it be to collect your candy in one of these cool bags every Halloween?!

Halloween

I chose to review the Vita Contemporary Slate Striped bag. Each Vita bag features shoulder length straps, which is my preferred style of bag/purse. It can carry up to forty pounds and is made from a durable, machine washable woven polyester. When you consider that a typical gallon of milk is just 7 pounds, this baby can hold a LOT of groceries! My very favorite aspect of the bag is that it folds into itself and is stuffed into a small pouch about the size of my cell phone. I just throw it into the bottom of my purse, but it comes with a carabiner attached to the bag so I could clip it to my keys or a hook in my purse if I wanted.

small bag

The fabric is thin and light but definitely durable; I’m not worried about any rips or tears like I’ve had in some of my other reusable bags.  I like the subtle yet sophisticated striped pattern and slate color. I intend to keep it in my purse for shopping trips, but it’s cool enough that I used it as a purse when I went out one night after a show and didn’t have my purse with me but needed to hold a few things.

show

And here I am with my ChicoBag on a recent trip to the tennis court with my family: two tennis rackets, 3 balls, a wallet, cell phone, lip gloss and room for TONS more!

tennis

Everyone should own at least one ChicoBag so you’re not caught at the store without a bag and are forced to use a plastic one. And at $5.99 for the Original bag, there’s no excuse not to get one! You can purchase ChicoBags online or you can see if they’re at a store near you here. Join the ChicoBag revolution and follow them on Facebook and Twitter!

Well, I don’t know about you ladies, but I had a fabulous Mother’s Day. My hubby let me sleep in, made breakfast for me and the kids, helped get the kids ready for church so I had time to curl my hair, and then he made dinner AND cleaned it up. He also got me beautiful flowers, a thoughtful card and a hand-made gift from the kids (which was hand-made at Lowe’s and stamped with their logo. Thanks, Lowe’s. I always wanted to remember you on Mother’s Day). But anyway, our big day is over, and now it’s time to start thinking about how to spoil our men for their big day in less than a month! Luckily, we here at Dandy Giveaway have got some cool giveaways coming down the pipes made especially for that special guy in your life. My first one is a super cool watch made out of wood. Yes, wood!

wwlogo2012

WeWOOD Watches specializes in crafting watches out of wood. But don’t worry; they’re not deforesting the earth to make their watches, all of their watches are made from recycled wood, remnant pieces of wood flooring, or wood that is otherwise unusable and/or sustainable. Cool, right? On their website they list where the wood comes from for each style of watch they make. For example, this Jupiter watch in Black was made from Blackwood, which, according to the description on their site, is very easy to grow and therefore very sustainable.

jupiter-black1

Even cooler is the fact that for every watch purchased, they plant a tree! They work with the American Forests non-profit as well as Trees for the Future to plant new trees all over the world. Their philosophy is “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” They are definitely doing their part to preserve and rebuild our ecosystem, so you can feel good about buying one of their watches. And they have tons of cool ones to choose from! You can check out their collection here, but below are some of my favorites:

moon-brown1

This watch, the Moon in Brown, is dainty enough it could be worn by a female. Beautiful styling.

metis-chocolate2

And how stylish does the Metis in Chocolate look? This could easily make the transition from work to home to church no problem. A very versatile piece.

I was sent the Date watch in Beige (which comes from Maple wood, if you’re interested) and my hubby loves it! It’s super light (1.5 ounces!), which is nice for him because he’s used to wearing watches that weigh upwards of 3 lbs. Seriously. He loves that it’s unique and definitely a conversation-starter, but not so “unique” that it comes off as weird. If your man works in a field where he would be exposed to water constantly you might want to consider a different watch; it’s definitely not water-proof but “splash-proof” (wood expands when it gets wet, so over time, repeated water exposure would cause the links to become less flexible). You can clean the watch with a mixture of olive oil and lemon juice, and changing the battery and removing the links to make it smaller are all done just like a regular watch, so there’s no surprises there.

watch arm

Even on my hubby’s uber-hairy arms (love you babe!), this watch looks cool, and I definitely like it a whole lot more than his old plastic-y “sport” watch. WeWOOD’s watches are definitely one-of-a-kind and something you can feel good about buying for your Husband/Dad/Brother/whoever this Father’s Day. Enter the giveaway below to win the exact watch featured here, the Date in Beige:

I worked in an elementary school in the primary grades for a couple of years, and I always had a bottle of hand sanitizer at my desk.  I used it all day long, and I would quickly squirt some on my students’ hands as they walked out the door to go to lunch and when they came back from recess.  One of the downfalls to using this hand sanitizer, though, was the alcohol included in the product — I couldn’t stand the horrible smell of alcohol that followed, and I hated the burning sting that came when the sanitizer would hit a paper cut or scrape.

safeHands offers an alternative to alcohol-based hand sanitizers with their products that are alcohol- and ethanol-free.  We were sent a set of the safeHands line and the safeSquirts line, and we love all of them!

safehands-classic2

The safeHands line comes in unscented, Clean Linen, and Cucumber Mint, and I love that they all leave my hands feeling clean with a light scent.  safesquirtsWe also received the safeSquirts line, and my boys ask for these all the time on the go!  I keep one in my van, one in my husband’s truck, and one in my purse so we can sanitize and moisturize whenever we need.  These scents include Bubble Gum, Cool Blue, and Tooty Fruity, and I love that they foam so the product lasts as long as possible.

safeHands also offers safeWipes with the same sanitizing features, and they will be offering safePaws for pets, safeTronics for electronics, and zenHands with aromatherapy.

If you’re looking for an alternative to alcohol-based hand sanitizers or are interested in products that are safe for kids and healthy for the planets, take a look at safeHands!

I was joking with my husband the other day that it feels like most of my “modern” pregnancy and infant parenting choices are not so modern anymore.  I beg for an epidural when I walk through the door of L&D rather than birthing naturally, I nurse for only a couple of months before switching to formula and bottles, I prefer to have my babies in their own cribs without any blankets or crib bumpers rather than in bed with me, I use disposable diapers, and the list goes on.  The only thing that I’ve done with my boys that is semi-“modern” is make my own baby food.  I LOVED being able to throw fruits and vegetables into the Magic Bullet and come out with great, fresh baby food in just a couple of seconds.  One of my main problems, though, was transporting it and feeding them when we were out of the house.  Frankly, I think this is concern even with store-bought food — it’s just not easy to find a suitable high chair substitute and then to use a spoon with the little containers.

Meet my new favorite modern product, Little Green Pouch!!  The Little Green Pouch is a reusable food pouch that can be filled with healthy foods of your own choosing, that can save money, and that is a green alternative to disposable food pouches.

I absolutely love these Little Green Pouches!  While their use for baby food is obvious, they are easily used for older kids as well.  I can’t even begin to count the number of times my four-year-old asks for sugar-filled Gogurt or another pricey applesauce pouch after he’s completely downed one in record time.  We’ve used them for our boys (22 months and 4 years old) in the past couple of days, and they work like a charm.

openA friend of mine mentioned that she’s freezed food in them so they can thaw out throughout the day and be ready for lunches or snacks on the go.  These would be perfect to keep food cold in lunch boxes at school or day care.

And, another one of my modern-but-not-modern choices is to use the dishwasher instead of washing by hand, so thank heavens that these Little Green Pouches are dishwasher-safe!

I think I like candy probably more than most things.  Yeah, I said “things.”  I don’t even mean that I like it more than most foods; I really do mean most things.  Ok, I probably like my hubs and kids more  (probably… on most days).  So I am so excited to feature Emily at Candy Calamity, a girl after my own heart for sure.

Candy Calamity is a sweet (pun intended) shop full of handmade jewelry and accessories made from recycled materials, including candy wrappers!    Emily (so creative, by the way) makes jewelry from candy wrappers, pouches from plastic shopping bags, resin earrings from scraps of paper, wire and brightly colored tissue.   She has a self-proclaimed “passion for trashion” and has figured out how to make something too cute from… well, trash!

Stop by Candy Calamity and you’ll find jewelry made from Starburst papers,

from Dum Dum wrappers,

Necklace pendants from fortune cookies

Candy Calamity also has brooches, magnets and even unique book thongs!  You can see all of Emily’s yummy goodness in her Etsy shop here, and stop by her blog for more here.

This week, one lucky duck will win these Pasticcio earrings from Candy Calamity — the color is winner’s choice.

Emily says this about her earrings:

Pasticcio is a term used in music or art to mean ‘a work or style produced by borrowing fragments, ingredients, or motifs from various sources.’  For my earrings I start with leftover pieces of scrapbook paper, tissue, wrapping paper, catalog pages and even crazy things like candy wrappers, gum foil, packaging from tea bags or potato chip bags, really anything I can get my hands on.  I form and shape the pieces into matching beads and wrap with wire, ribbon, or embroidery floss.  Once they are formed the beads are given a nice thick coat of resin to make them durable, water resistant, and shiny.  They are finished with coordinating swarovski crystals and silver ear hooks.
While the earrings are a matched set, no two beads I make are ever alike, so each pair is a one of a kind
