Simply 7 Snack Squad {Giveaway} – Closed

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

In high school my husband had a thing for fancy chips. As a matter of fact he had one friend whose house he loved to hang out at above all others because their pantry was constantly stocked with great chips that were all sorts of interesting and different flavors. The first time I saw Simply 7 chips, all I could think of was how excited my husband was going to be with the variety of chips and chip flavors coming to our door.

Simply 7 is a lot more than your average snack company, rather than deep fried mystery ingredients they’ve made a point to make their snack ingredients both pronounceable, and tasty. The chips are all natural, gluten free and have about half the fat of regular potato chips, they also have more than 30 chips in a serving. Am I hearing bells for a winner? You bet! Camille thought so too, you can read her awesome review of Simply 7 here.

So Simply 7 created the Snack Squad to keep all us chip lovers in the loop with their great products. By signing up you can be sent member only coupons, birthday surprise, product updates and sometimes even prizes (like a personalized Simply 7 Winners Box!)

I was sent a Snack Squad Winners Box to review. It comes with winnery things like four bags of Simply 7 chips, chip swag like a bag clip, a dry erase magnet, and a dry erase marker, and best of all a customized chip bag, complete with your name, photo, and bio – which I’m not going to lie, is pretty sweet.

Since my customized bag was for Sea Salt chips, I thought I had better pick a picture of me at the sea! (FYI – The customized bag does not contain chips)

Reading over their website I thought all the healthy stuff sounded great, but how did they actually taste and really compare to your regular chips?

Simply 7 Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Chips

The first bag I tried was the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus Chips. They are light and textured and kind of reminded me of Bugle Chips (you know, the ones you put on your fingers and pretend you’re a witch… I’m not the only one who still does that am I?) I think these chips taste a little more like garlic than red pepper and they definitely are not spicy flavored, but they are tasty, especially paired with hummus! Ha.

Simply 7 Sea Salt Pomegranate Chips

These were a bit bigger of a deviation from your standard bag of chips and I was a little hesitant to dig in, I just don’t generally think of sweet fruit mixing with chips. They were different. They were really light weight, I would say down right fluffy for a chip. The sweet pomegranate flavor was faint and you mostly taste it at the end of your chip, and the more you eat the less peculiar they taste. Have any of you ever had those veggie straws? I think you can find them at Costco? They reminded me a lot of those, light, salty initially with a hint of flavor at the end. If you’re looking for something a little wild these might be the chips for you.

Simply 7 Cheddar Quinoa Chips

These chips were firmer than the two previous kinds, kind of hearty sun chip. I thought the flavor was amazing, you can taste a little bit of the nuttyness from the quinoa but I thought it actually went really well with the cheddar flavor (who knew?). Actually, I’m a big fan of the flavor of quinoa to being with so that might be tainting my judgment a little. You know what else is kind of amazing about these chips, a single serving has 9 grams of protein… so I can pretty much call this a post work our food, right?

Simply 7 Jalapeno Lentil Chips

I saved my favorite for last. I thought the flavor of these were amazing, but they have a little bit of a kick to them so if you’re not into spicy food these probably aren’t for you. If you like your salsa medium spicy and above I invite you to dig in. These chips are light weight and seem to be on the airy side, they’re curved which makes them great for dip and they’re spicy but not so much so that you have to drown your mouth out with milk after eating a handful.

Simply 7 has some simply great snacks and if you’re looking to mix up your pantry a big I would suggest adding a bag or three. If you want to keep in the loop and get some awesome swag along the way then you’ve got to join the Snack Squad. You can also find these great chips at your local grocery store using the store locator.

And the moment you’ve all been reading for. 🙂 Simply 7 has offered a Winner Box, complete with custom personalized chip bag to one lucky Dandy Snack Squad Winner.

I bet the huge majority of us stay-at-home moms are big snackers.  One of the great things about being home with the kids all day is being able to eat at home and always have access to the kitchen.  I have noticed, however, that I can completely skip meals while snacking all day, so I have to pay attention to what I’m actually eating.  As long as they are healthy snacks, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing at all.

Simply7Logo_349_HRes

Simply7 is a brand of remarkably delicious chips made from pomegranates, hummus, and lentils.  Uber healthy, right?  But before I even looked at the labels, I first wanted to see how they tasted, and not be swayed by just how nutritious or not they actually were.  I was sent this huge box of assorted varieties–

Pomegranate Chips: White Cheddar, Black Pepper, and Sea Salt

Hummus Chips: Spicy Chili Pepper, Sea Salt, Roasted Red Pepper, and Tomato Basil

Lentil Chips: Creamy Dill, Sea Salt, Jalapeno, and Brushchetta

IMG_9456

I first pulled out a fairly basic variety–Sea Salt Lentil Chips (below).  They were delicious!  Paired with a tub of hummus, I think I ate half the bag in one sitting.  The lentil chips look and taste air-popped and aren’t greasy in the least.  They are the perfect size and shape to scoop with dip and one chip can fit entirely in your mouth.  That is very important to me!

IMG_9458

I was so pleased with how great these tasted (and I am NOT a chip person), and even 10x more impressed to read the ingredients label.  Only four ingredients: lentil flour, potato starch, safflower oil, sea salt.  Very impressive!

See, Simply7Snacks has a few core standards:

Zero grams trans fat and no cholesterol
No artificial colors or flavors
No additives or preservatives
Gluten free ingredients
All natural recipes
Simple ingredients
Simply delicious

chip1

The whole family has really enjoyed digging into these.  Above and to the left are the White Cheddar Pomegranate Chips.  The adults in the house thought the pomegranate chips were just a little weird.  The slightly sweet fruitiness paired with salty and cheesy was just a fuzzy mix, or rather just an odd base to start with, but pomegranate-lovers might be all over these.  Plus, my kids think they’re great.  I don’t mind a bit if my kids want a handful of these for a snack or with a meal because they’re so dang healthy!  40% less fat than potato chips.

The Bruschetta Lentil Chips (above, right) are my all-time favorite!!  I’ve completely hidden these away from everyone else.  I don’t want to share a single chip.

chip2

The bags are a great size, by the way.  Probably smaller than a typical Doritos bag, but large enough for several people taking large servings.  One bag on the table with a pot of chili was just right for four of us to down.  The Jalepeno variety is very crunchy, not greasy, and it has a great spicy kick.

The hummus chips are a little more dense, less air-popped, and have more texture to them.  Above, and to the right, are the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus chips.  They are great by themselves and have great flavor because of the garlic, onion, and paprika, but eaten with homemade spinach artichoke dip is a-mazing!

MainSlide-QUINOA

This just in: NEW Quinoa chips!  Sign me up!

Bottom line, these are really delicious, really healthy, and I totally recommend trying all of these.  I’m so glad my local Shaw’s carries them.  See the store locator to find the nearest place Simply7 is sold.

One winner will win a huge box of these Simply7 chips!  11 different varieties!

Mediterranean Snacks {Giveaway}-CLOSED

Today is my son’s 4th birthday, and this is the first year since he was two that he hasn’t asked for Chicken and Couscous for his birthday dinner (this year he wants macaroni and cheese–he’s officially 4). But couscous is still one of his favorite foods, so it’s only fitting that today’s giveaway is for Mediterranean Snacks!

logo

Mediterranean Snacks is a snack food company that is “committed to providing nutritionally superior authentic snacking solutions that deliver consumer expectations for taste, health, and satiation.” All of their snacks are all-natural, non-GMO and gluten-free, and they are dedicated to helping people live “Snactive” by making good nutritious snack choices while living an active lifestyle.  Now that’s my kind of attitude!

snacks

I was sent a whole box full of delicious snacks, including Hummuz Crackers, Lentil Crackers, Baked Lentil Chips and Tapaz 2 Go. All of the snacks came in several yummy flavors like roasted red pepper, roasted garlic, cracked pepper, rosemary herb, fiery tomato and parmesan garlic.

box

I’d never eaten crackers or chips made out of lentils (i.e. legumes), so I was a bit wary at first. But the Lentil Crackers and the Baked Lentil Chips were by far my favorite! My favorite flavors of the Crackers were the sea salt and cracked pepper flavors, and my favorites of the Baked Chips were the fiery tomato and rosemary flavors. The Lentil Chips were good on their own, but I felt that I needed some sort of dip for the Lentil Crackers. I think that’s why the Tapaz 2 Go were invented–a package of Lentil Crackers paired with a flavored Hummus in a container that can stand and perfectly hold the hummus while you’re on the go = brilliant! Those were gone in a hot minute in my house! My 2-year old was even downing the hummus like it was frosting!

eat

The Hummuz Crisps were not my favorite as they had a strange texture to me and I had a hard time tasting the flavor, but they were good when dipped in hummus. Mediterranean Snack foods are delicious and I would buy more in a heartbeat!  They also sell all-natural and organic popcorn, veggie straws and veggie chips, and multi grain chips. You can find Mediterranean Snacks online at Amazon.com and Abe’s Market, and at retailers such as Sprouts, WalMart, Fresh & Easy, Vons and other grocery stores; check the Store Locator to find a store near you. These would make some really yummy appetizers at any holiday party you’re hosting this season, so go pick some up today! And then enter for a chance to win a box of goodies from Mediterranean Snacks!

In high school, I worked for two summers at a bakery.  The first year, I worked in the front of the shop selling the cakes and desserts, and on my breaks, I would watch and learn from the decorators in the back.  They’d let me borrow frosting bags and tips to practice my lettering at home, and the next summer, I passed the test with the manager to become a decorator!  Oh I loved that job!  I never tackled the wedding cakes, but I had a ball making birthday cakes, graduation cakes covered in gorgeous frosting flowers, and even a “Will you marry me?” cake.  Before the decorating magic happened, however, I was also the girl who would cut the frozen cakes to size and frost them in buttercream.  Let me tell you, there was a lot of delicious cake tops that had to be thrown away, but went straight to my waistline instead.  It was just so delicious!  I had a flood of sweet memories come back to me when I tore into these cakes from Butterfly Bakery, who you might recognize from another review from a few weeks ago.

IMG_7721

But unlike those bakery cake tops, I had a little less guilt as I stuffed this entire “No Sugar Added” Chocolate Chip Loaf Cake into my mouth.  Ok, I didn’t down it in one sitting, but I was tempted to.  It was delicious.  Sweet, moist, not too light or dense, flavorful, great texture, and the perfect size to share.  Or not.

IMG_7724And don’t forget this glorious “Sugar Free” Angel Food Cake!  Doesn’t this picture make you want to grab your fork and dig in?

IMG_7722If you know your angel food cake, you already know that they don’t have any fat, but its usually the sugars that will kill you.  So take a look at this food label.  0g of fat and 0g of sugars.  How’s that for guilt-free goodness?

IMG_7727We had some of my friends and their kids over for our weekly “Toddler Time”, and since we were learning about the letter C, we naturally had cake with cherries.  And I didn’t feel the least bit bad about feeding these kids cake before lunch, because this cake isn’t packed with fat OR sugar!

Take a lunch break and go shopping at Butterfly Bakery.  Stock up on Sugar-Free, No Sugar Added, Gluten Free, Lite and Whole Grain treats.

When I still lived at home and we had church from 9-12pm every Sunday, we’d come home and eat a big meal as a late lunch, and only need a small meal or snack late in the evening.  I would take over as “Muffin Girl” and put myself in charge of feeding a family of 11 the most delicious muffins I could come up with.  I even got a book from the library called “1000 Muffins” (and renewed it about a dozen times) and loved trying out new recipes each week!  Because I was a health-conscious teenager who was also checking out books on healthy eating and healthy lifestyles, I kept trying to cut out the fat and sugar in my weekly muffin batch, but sometimes they turned out less and less appealing.  Of course I would be interested in testing out some “no sugar added” muffins!  Why, that was my quest!

logo

Butterfly Bakery is an online shop of the most delicious treats in a variety of categories: Sugar-Free, No Sugar Added, Gluten Free, Lite and Whole Grain.  Perfect!  I was sent the No Sugar Added Mini Blueberry Muffins and the Sugar Free Mini Double Chocolate Chip Muffins.  Both are sold for $5.99, but if you buy them online, shipping can be a little steep, so I recommend buy a lot at once to make it worth the added cost.

IMG_7296

Butterfly Bakery is in New Jersey, but their products can be found in supermarkets and specialty stores nationwide.  If there is not a store in your area, they are happy to take your order via fax and ship to you direct.

IMG_7301

So my first thoughts were something like, “Double Chocolate Chip?  Sugar Free?  How does it still taste so good?”  Well, see below.  2 mini muffins = 10 g of fat and 170 calories, which is kind of a heavy toll for minis, but according to the ingredients, these are truly sugar-free, so methinks these would still be great options for diabetics, but not necessarily dieters.  Listed on the package, you can read: Not a Low Calorie Food.

IMG_7298

How do they taste, Camille?  I was very surprised with how similar these taste compared to big name snack brands, like Hostess and Little Debbie.  To me, these have the same texture, moist greasy crumb, sweet and rich taste and appearance as any other box of goodies you’d find at a grocery store, but that’s what makes these awesome.  You can have the same indulgent treat and taste that you love, but without the added sugar, or any sugar at all.  What a great alternative!

YumEarth Fruit Snacks {Review}

I still remember the first time we bought fruit snacks. We were going on a road trip with our son, who was only about a year at the time, and we thought we’d get him something new and exciting to eat that would keep him happy through our long trip. Ironically enough, he didn’t like them! Of course, after repeated exposure (and seeing his friends eating the coveted snacks) he grew to love them, and now they’re like gold. Bribery with fruit snacks can get just about anything done! Sadly, fruit snacks aren’t the healthiest of all foods, so I can’t bribe with them all day long.  That is, until I found YumEarth Natural Organic Fruit Snacks.

logo

YumEarth Organics fruit snacks are better tasting and better for you than your average fruit snack.  They are vegan, contain no gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, or artificial colors and dyes, AND they’re actually made from fruit extract. So, you know, they actually taste like FRUIT. Imagine that!

package

The fruit snacks are dry to the touch instead of sticky and they have a chewy consistency, but not sticky-chewy like other snacks. They’re shaped like the fruit that they taste like, and the taste is good! Peach was my favorite, but the other flavors–Strawberry, Cherry and Banana–were also delicious. And because they’re made from fruit extracts, each package has 100% of a child’s daily recommended Vitamin C! My kids gobbled them up, and when I asked them if they tasted any different than the fruit snacks we normally buy, they said no. So, you don’t have to compromise taste and likability to give your kids a healthier option. And with so many kids today with allergens or sensitivities to certain ingredients, it’s nice to know there’s a healthier, more conscientious candy out there for everyone to enjoy! You can check the list of ingredients for each candy here.

kids

In addition to fruit snacks, YumEarth Organics  makes organic lollipops, sour beans, candy drops and gummy bears, all of which are gluten-free, dye- and artificial-color free, contain no high fructose corn syrup, and use ingredients grown on sustainable family farms. YumEarth can be purchased from their website, on other online retailers such as Amazon.com and Drugstore.com, or at local retailers such as Walgreens and Target.

NurturMe {Review}

When my son was a baby, I made all his baby food. I would cut up fresh fruits and vegetables, blend them or boil them if needed, and then freeze them in ice cube trays and store them in the freezer. It was a great way to save money and know I was giving him the freshest food possible. However, when Number Two came along, life got significantly crazier, and I opted for store-bought, jarred baby food. I wish I had known then about NurturMe, a better alternative to the stuff in the jar.

NM_Logo_CMYK_Color

NurturMe was created in 2008 by two moms in Austin, TX, who wanted a better way to feed babies than “pureed nutrition in thick glass containers.” After lots of messy experimenting in their kitchens, they partnered with experts in the freeze-drying organic farming community and launched their first line of products in a Texas store in 2010. Since then they have expanded to grocery stores nation-wide, national big-box retailers and online retailers, but their product goals have remained the same:  to create a product that is Certified Organic, Non-GMO verified, Kosher, perservative-, salt-, sugar- and gluten-free, AND made in the USA!

group

NurturMe offers Cereals, Singles, Blends and Snacks. I was sent some Singles, some Blends and some Snacks. I’ll start with the Singles and Blends. The powders can be mixed with water, milk or breast milk to make better baby food, but since my youngest has been over “baby food” for at least a year, I knew I had to get creative in trying these powders. So I used some of their recipe ideas and got to work. First, I tried the Crisp Apple powder added to vanilla yogurt. Unfortunately, the powder didn’t mix in well and so the texture was grainy instead of smooth. The apple taste was great, but the texture was definitely off. My girl “Sunny” wouldn’t eat it. Next, I tried mixing in a Sweet Potato/Raisins/Carrots blend into our Ground Turkey Stroganoff dinner. The kids didn’t seem to notice that the flavor had been altered and ate it just fine. I tasted it and it was good! I could taste a bit of the sweetness from the raisins and sweet potato, but overall it was a good nutritional additive.

packet

Next we tried the Snacks. They are small bags of premium dried fruits and veggies cut up into tiny, bite-sized pieces. Bountiful Bites (apple, banana, broccoli) was a good combo with its sweet, tart and slightly bitter flavors. We all ate some and really liked it. Happy Harvest (pea, sweet corn, apple) was also a good combo, but the crunchy peas were occasionally too crunchy for my taste. I appreciated the fact that the dried fruit was definitely high-quality; every pea, corn kernel and chunk of apple was perfectly shaped and not wrinkled, shriveled or maimed in any way.

dried

NurturMe Blends and Snacks definitely seem more geared toward babies, and I don’t know that I would buy the powders just as a nutritional additive for my older kids, but as a substitute for jarred baby food these powders are great. I especially like that they are very portable; you could bring these camping, to the park, on a plane, etc. , and all you would need is some water or milk and you would have a nutritious meal for a baby! NurturMe foods can be purchased online or at select retailers, including Target, nationwide.

Green smoothie fan?  Love that super ugly look of that super healthy meal?  Love how you know exactly what goes into it, and its kind of a surprise every time as to what this new concoction will taste like?  We are definitely a green smoothie family.  We can buy a ginormous bag of spinach at Haymarket for $3 and have smoothies every morning for a week.  “Rocket” drinks it like milk, and I love knowing that our bodies are chock full of fruits and veggies first thing in the morning, especially so that I can justify my not-so-healthy choices later on in the day.
hs-logo-no-border
I’m fairly positive that if you are a green smoothie junkie, you’re going to be all over this monthly subscription box called Healthy Surprise.  So how do you get this goodness in you?  You subscribe to a “Starter Box”, “Healthy Box”, or a “Large Box”, depending on what size you would like.  The smallest box starts at $33/month, but this includes 16-20 servings!  The Large Box runs for $99, but that is 48-60 servings, people!  The box ships the same day, and on your doorstep arrives a box of delicious, healthy snacks.  Everything included in the box is vegan, gluten-free, healthy, and delicious.  I can attest to this!  Rest assured, everything has been carefully selected by this criteria, and you won’t be disappointed in the great snacks.  No MSG, no corn, no soy, no gluten, no egg, no shellfish, etc., just good and healthy!
IMG_3445
My first impression when I opened the box was that there was SO much food in there!  Of all the monthly subscription boxes I’ve reviewed, Healthy Surprise has the most food, by far.  These aren’t just tiny sample size portions with a lot of wrapper.  These are substantial, practically full-meal sizes.
IMG_3447
I dug right in and starting enjoying some things I’ve never seen before.  Among the goodies this month were: Beanitos black bean chips, Enjoy Life seed and fruit mix, fruit.0 organic fruit snack, Hail Merry almonds, Hail Merry choco macaroons, Homefree chocolate chip cookies (my boys loved them), a Gopal’s power wrap, a Gopal’s brownie, a Cocomo Joe Green Joebar, a Chi Bar cocoa cherry energy bar, and three Righteouslky Raw chocolates in pure dark, divine mint, and synergy spice.  Yum!
The first thing I consumed was this amazing kale granola (excuse me, “greenola”) which was practically two whole meals of goodness.  And so filling!  Plain, with milk, or on top of yogurt, I was so impressed with how delicious kale can taste.  My thoughts on the Mexican power wraps: wow, holy flavor!  I can’t say I’ve tried or seen anything quite like it.  The choco macaroons were my favorite!  They are slightly dehydrated and such a yummy treat, even if they do look like packed dirt clumps.
 IMG_3449
See, everything included kind of had a different look to it, but everything tasted fantastic!!  Just like green smoothies–don’t let the appearance bother you, and you’ll introduce your taste buds to some fantastic flavors, and have the assurance that what you’re eating is healthy healthy healthy!
How fun to have so many surprises in one product!  It is a surprise as to when your box will show up, its a surprise as to what will be inside, but even more, it will surprise you how much you will enjoy these truly healthy and new, exciting products!  If you have resolved to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle, try these boxes from Healthy Surprise!  I, for one, would love to see what is in store for next month’s box!

YOU might be the lucky winner to find out!  One reader will win a starter box from Healthy Surprise!  ($33 value)  And they ship internationally!

All I really need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt!  Lucy Van Pelt (in Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz)

Would you think me a bit fanatical if I told you I am already in Valentine-mode?  I cleared the entire house of Christmas decor yesterday, and now I can’t wait to put up pink and red hearts everywhere!  I’m already dreaming of Valentine’s treats…

Is a little chocolate the way to win your heart?  Sjaak’s Organic Chocolates creates some delicious gourmet organic chocolates!  On top of being a lacto-vegetarian operation (meaning, they have no eggs or gelatin in their factory), they support fair trade practices and encourage sustainable agriculture by using organic, non-GMO ingredients.  They are a gluten free facility and they use organic soy in all of our products.  Impressive, right?  Wait till you taste their chocolate!

sjaaks-logo

Sjaak’s sent me two Valentine tote bags of their delicious organic chocolates: dark chocolate hearts and dark chocolate caramel bites.  I still can’t decide which ones are my favorite.

IMG_1686

The chocolates have a very strong flavor of pure ingredients: organic evaporated cane juice, organic cocoa paste, organic cocoa butter, and organic vanilla.  That’s it!  It produces the most intensely rich dark chocolate I’ve tasted.  I kept thinking to myself, this is how dark chocolate should taste.  If you like a lot of flavor in your very dark chocolate, these will light up your life. IMG_1735

Sjaak’s also sent me some candy bars!  Eli’s Earth Bars: chocolate goodness certified organic candy bars.  And man oh man, they are delicious, as well as organic and fair trade, which makes them environmentally and socially responsible.  Eli’s Earth Bars also gives back 5% of every sale to a non-profit charitable organization that benefits children.  Way to go Eli’s!

IMG_1706

They were so creamy!  That simply pure taste of ingredients void of artificial flavors and additives is one I could get used to.  There are terrific candy bars on their own—not identical to common grocery store candy bars, or imitation knock-offs.

IMG_1714
