Remember that little ‘ole government shut down that took place… Oh, back in October?  Well, we were actually on vacation when that whole thing went down.  Yep.  On Day #2 of our vacation to be exact.  Our vacation to…  Wait for it… The Smoky Mountains NATIONAL Park.  Day #1 we went into the park just fine.  Day #2 we were greeted by this:

1375827_10151678887215894_1599772439_n

Talk about throwing a wrench in someone’s plans.

Fortunately for us there are tons of other fun things to do in the Smoky Mountains area besides the park!  Prior to making the trip to Tennessee we were invited to attend the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show.  So even if the park had been open we were still going to attend the show.  Dinner.  Great show.  How can you pass that up?  Well, it ended up being such an amazing show!  Lots of laughs and delicious food to help us get over not being able to go back into the park.  🙂   Plus, it’s fun for the entire family!

Even the grounds of the theater are fun:

Now back to the show and the food…

Everything is served family style and it’s what you would expect out of a real Southern feast:

  • Feudin’ Fried Chick’n
  • Open Pit Pulled -to-Pieces Pork Barbeque
  • Southern Style Creamy Soup
  • Smashed Mashed Taters
  • Buttery Corn on the Cob
  • Keep It Comin’ Cornbread
  • No Tellin’ What’s In It Coleslaw
  • Granny’s Famous Specialty Dessert

photo-77

We couldn’t even eat it all!  You are given plenty of time to eat before the show starts.  That way you can really focus on the entertainment.

The story of the Hatfields and McCoys is told in a way that I had never heard before.  So that kept it interesting!  In terms of entertainment there’s music, dancing, “fighting”, romance, and a great story line.  It all comes together for a feuding good time!

Will we go back to this Pigeon Forge, Tennessee show next time we are in the Smoky Mountains?  Most definitely!  The kids loved it and it was definitely one of the best shows around.  Stay tuned for my thoughts on another great show…  The Smoky Mountain Opry!  🙂

Isn’t the fall simply breathtaking?  All the changing of the season going on…  When the leaves take on various hues of splendor.  If you live where there’s no change in season then I’m very sorry for you.  🙂  Because you are missing quite the sight!  It’s one of my most favorite times of the year and here in the midwest we get to enjoy the change in season.  So if you are missing out then get yourself very fast to a climate that changes or just visit one once in a while during the fall months.  😉

My family and I (all 9 of us– my little family, my parents, my brother and his family) spent the first week of October in the Smoky Mountains.  Now that is a sight to be seen.  Remember that Audi and I have been to the mountains of Tennessee before, but it was August.  Definitely pre-season to the change.  The leaves were just starting to change there the first week of October, but we’ve been told that we missed the really gorgeous peak which is happening right now.  I’m sure it’s always a beautiful part of the country, though!

For our stay we were welcomed by the Gatlinburg Falls Resort.  Our accommodations were spectacular and made the trip that much more enjoyable.  Especially since the National Park closed the day after we arrived due to the Federal Government Shut Down.  Nice, huh?  The park is open now, though!  Without the wonderful cabin we would have been quite sad, but it brightened our vacation immensely.  We stayed in the Treehouse cabin:

And was it ever decked out!

It had its very own theater room:

Plus, all the essentials:

Each bedroom had a king sized bed, its own bathroom and fireplace:

The end of July we went on our annual vacation to Lake Powell.  It’s in Utah/Arizona and always a family reunion of sorts.  ALL of us stay on a houseboat for an entire week and there are A LOT of us.

946300_10151562550550894_507213280_n

This time around there were 28 of us.  Again… all on one house for a week.  Fortunately for us it’s a big houseboat.  🙂

969036_10151551972835894_1406414560_n-1

It’s always a fun trip, but this year it was also very eventful!  The second night we were all surprised when my niece’s boyfriend (who joined us at the lake this year…brave boy) proposed!  It was great news and we were all very happy.  After that how could the trip get even more eventful you ask???

Well, the very next day my brother-in-law and his wife received a phone call (on the boat) from the adoption agency they have worked with in the past.  They have been on the waiting list for quite a few years to adopt again and to no avail.  Out of nowhere a birth mother selected them to adopt her 10 month old twins!  It has been over 5 years since their last adoption and we were all ecstatic by the fabulous news.  So now in addition to their two girls they have another girl and a boy!

My friends over at Joovy wanted to be involved in the blessed union of adoption and welcoming the newest additions to our family.  They are the experts on baby gear and knew that twins require double the gear.

Joovy was nice enough to send my brother-in-law and his wife a fantastic welcome home gift for their twins.  The Caboose Too Ultralight!

Aren’t they adorable?  My sister-in-law said that it’s the perfect stroller for doubles.  It’s really light weight and the back seat can easily be converted to a tandem for when the babies are older.  Most importantly due to the positioning of the seats the babies aren’t able to pull each others hair!  We were able to officially meet the little cuties last weekend at the wedding of our niece.  They of course had their Caboose stroller in tow.   🙂

Oh and here’s a picture of the bride and groom with the happy parents of the bride looking on admiringly at all of their children.

Love them all!

Thanks again Joovy for sending the stroller to my family and helping to congratulate them on their newest additions!

A few months ago we had family from Utah come to visit us in St. Louis.  We had a grand time showing them around our fine city…  However, the most favorite part of the visit was spending the day up in Nauvoo, Illinois.  Sure it was quite the drive and down more than a few country roads to get to, but it’s definitely worth the trip!  There’s so much history in Nauvoo and it’s fun for all ages:

Plus, there are authentic Nauvoo log cabins that you can stay in.

We actually stayed in the cutest little cabin east of the Mississippi!

The Danielson cabin has everything you need for your nights stay:  A refrigerator, microwave, bathroom with shower, desk, and 2 bunk beds.

photo-55

Each cabin comes with it’s own unique story and you can read about the families that used to reside in them.  The Danielson cabin actually used to be in Wyoming, but was moved to Nauvoo and reconstructed by the owner’s of Nauvoo Log Cabins.  So the community of cabins itself has a rich history just like the city of Nauvoo!

Our visiting family stayed in the Beebe cabin, because it had more room for their size of 7 people:

The Beebe comes with a fully equipped kitchen, 1 1/2 baths, and sleeps 9.

It even has a really cool loft!

The weather is getting colder, and isn’t it grand?  We’re certainly jazzed about all the upcoming Fall festivities (aka, hay rides, apple picking, and the oddly phrased Boston tradition called ‘leaf peeping’).  Once we cross off all the items on our autumn bucket list, I’ll be more than happy to take it easy for a few months and enjoy the comfort of my cozy home!  When baby its cold outside, I am perfectly happy to stay indoors for up to a week at a time!  One of my favorite parts about winter hibernation is all the games we pull out during the day!
logo
Winning Moves Games (who also brought you our Sorry! game giveaway a few weeks ago) sent me two new ones to try, they are new family favorites!
IMG_6668
The first game is called 5ive Straight, and really, the rules are as simple as: draw a card, put one of your pegs on that number or higher, and try to get five in a row, but it is not as simple as it sounds!  Especially when you have a team of players.  I chose this game because you can play with 2-9 people.  That is so rare!  It makes this game great for date night as well as family night.
IMG_6669
My husband and I have pulled it out several nights in a row to play a quick game before bed (just like we did with “Sorry!”), and this one is just as fun!  There is certainly some strategy involved, and you really have to start playing to figure it out.
IMG_6674
While I’m sure this isn’t recommended for children under 3 because of the small chokable pieces, but the kids really liked playing with this one!  With a hundred colored pieces and a board covered with numbers, you can use your imagination and come up with all sorts of counting games, color games, and creative play.  My toddler will sit with this game for quite a while, putting all the colored pieces in specific numbered spots.
IMG_6679
We also busted out this Swan puzzle!  My mom is visiting us this week, and I can’t wait to bust this out tonight while we visit all night.  These whimsical pieces are so fun!!  There are THIRTY of them so you feel like you’re constantly coming across the most bizarre cut-outs and recognizable shapes.

One winner will get to choose whether they’d like their own 5ive Straight game or Swan boats puzzle!

Labor Day “officially” marks the end of summer, at least according to people who have kids in school. For those of us with kids little enough to be at home 24/7, summer’s still going, and will be for at least another month. But for those of you with school-age children, chances are, you’ve already done most of your back-to-school shopping, or maybe you’re going to finish it up this weekend with all the good Labor Day sales. But in case you’ve got just a few items of clothing left on your list or you’re looking for a gift for a friend (or something for yourself!) look no further than KicKee Pants!

logo

KicKee Pants designs all its clothing with the idea that “children should feel unrestricted by their clothing, even when they are dressed up, and that apparel for little ones should celebrate the innocence of childhood!” I love this mantra! Kids should be able to run, skip, tumble and play in their clothes, but not have to live in grungy sweats 24/7 to be able to do so. KicKee Pants has an adorable girls line including dresses, rompers, pants, hoodies, tights and leggings, and much more. Check out just some of these cute designs!

girls

Their boys line is equally cute (though we should say “cool” for the sake of the boys). I love their pajama line–they pair fun fabrics in bold colors for the bottoms with a coordinating top. Some tops have a large single-digit number on them. How fun would it be to get a set of pajamas with your new age for your birthday?!

pajamas

We were sent the Print Long Sleeve Polo in River Lattice to review. The shirt is solidly constructed and fits just right. My son is currently wearing a size 4T/5T/Boys size 4, and the size 5 fit him perfectly. The sleeves seemed a bit short, but maybe my son just has monkey arms (his dad does, so it’s a possibility). The fabric (95% Viscose from bamboo, 5% Spandex) is SUPER soft and stretchy and feels like it would be so comfortable to wear. It is long sleeved which will be warm in the winter but is light (not thin) which is good for my always-running-around-and-getting-sweaty boy. I love the print–it is fun and unique, and the colors blend well together. The blue looks great on my son, too! There’s no way I could get him to put this on with a pair of jeans or khaki pants in this heat, but you can imagine how slick this would look paired with a pair of pants!

shirt

KicKee Pants also has a great Women’s line. They sell all sorts of cute Maternity Shirts as well as Nightgowns and Robes. The nightgowns are made out of the same fabric as the shirt we were sent, and believe me, I could LIVE in a nightgown made out of this fabric.  I really don’t think I’d ever change out of it because it’s just so soft and stretchy and dreamy. The website suggests pairing the Nightgown with a Newborn Outfit (which they also sell) as a shower gift–how perfect would that be?!

About five years ago, I was up in the middle of the night and couldn’t get back to sleep, so I got out of bed and decided to get something done.  We had just moved in to our very first home that we had purchased a couple of weeks earlier, and I was in the middle of decorating.  There was a large wall that ran from our living room to our dining room, and I couldn’t figure out what to do with it.  That night, though, I came up with the most perfect wall college of different sizes/shapes/colors of frames that just happened to fit together perfectly.  I included some of the most important things to us in these frames (our marriage certificate, a family picture, a picture of Jesus Christ, etc.) along with some cute decorations (a large teal J, burlap background, etc.), and that large wall college has been a staple in every house we’ve lived in since then.

Since having children, we’ve had to make some changes to the pictures in the frames, and over the past year, I’ve had an empty 8×10 white frame that I couldn’t figure out what to do with.  Pure laziness, I know.  When I discovered Sprinkled Joy, though, I knew that I had found the perfect fit for that empty frame!

main

Sprinkled Joy is an Etsy shop that specializes in customizable prints and printables that are perfect for every room in the house or for any occasion.  There are a number of prints for family reunions, weddings, anniversaries, baby shower, birthdays, etc. that could then be framed and hung in a bedroom, living room, family room, or nursery.  I love that there is literally something for everyone in this shop — all customizable at an amazing price with a quick turnaround time.

One of my favorite parts of working with Sprinkled Joy over the past few weeks has been my interaction with Sarah, the shop owner.   She has been quick to respond to my messages, to update me with changes along the way, and to allow me the chance to make changes to my proof.  If you’re looking for someone who will ensure that your customizable products looks exactly the way you want it, I would highly recommend Sarah at Sprinkled Joy!

Sarah tells us on her About Us page: “In January 2012 I put some products up and people began buying them – I was shocked, and super flattered. From there Sprinkled Joy has grown beyond any expectations I initially had and has some regular customers and many new happy ones. I always love it when I can create something that has been personalized especially for someone and hope that my designs can bring an extra measure of joy into people’s lives.”

**This is the print I worked on with Sarah to create, and I could not have been more pleased with the outcome!!  I especially loved the idea of creating a print of these important places because my husband and I met in Okinawa, Japan, which is where we had our first date and where my husband proposed.  The interesting thing, though, is that we discovered a few weeks into our dating that we had both lived about a mile away from each other in a little town in Utah for about eight years!  My husband’s family moved to Washington state about the same time that we moved overseas, but our family would fly through Seattle during our summer trips back to visit grandparents.  We’ve loved how these places have forever changed our lives!

Once my son turned 3, my husband and I decided he was old enough to start playing games, so we got Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders for our family for Christmas. We had fun playing for about the first 10 times. After that, my husband and I would both cringe when he would ask to play either game. It wasn’t necessarily the game’s fault–he was young and would make up his own rules or would get really mad when he wouldn’t win–but the games definitely got real old real fast. Now he’s almost 4 and can handle more complicated and mature games, like card games. One of my favorite  card games that I played with my dad growing up was Go Fish, and Patch Products has put a new spin on this classic game with Go Oink® and Go Ape®!

logo

Patch Products sells games, construction sets, educational toys and puzzles, all with the main goal of families having FUN! They began making just puzzles in 1985 and since then have grown to produce hundreds of games and toys for kids and adults alike. Some of their more popular games include Farkle Frenzy®, The Game of Things…®, Bed Bugsâ„¢, Malarky® and Shark Attackâ„¢. They also have a huge line of  brand-licensed games including Dora, Clifford, SpongeBob and Where the Wild Things Are.

games 2

gamesgames 3

I was sent a copy of both Go Ape® and Go Oink® to review. Both games immediately became family favorites! We play Go Ape® at least once a day, and we rotate in Go Oink® every few days. Both games are similar to Go Fish, but instead of asking for a specific card to get three-of-a-kind, you have to act out what is on your card. So, in Go Ape®, you act out the action that the monkey is doing on your card. There are some really funny ones, and playing with a 3-year old is even funnier. We definitely have some favorite cards that, when one of us picks, make us giggle in anticipation to act it out. Of course, just like in the regular game, if the other player doesn’t have the card you asked for, you say “Go Ape” and they pick from the pile. Go Oink® is similar, except there are cartoon pictures of animals on the cards and you have to make the corresponding animal noise to ask for a card. We found that, before you play, you should go through all the cards and designate sounds for each animal. Most are very straightforward, but a few, like the lion and the bear, can sound similar, and it’s best to establish your “house rules” before you play to avoid confusion.

box

These games are definitely fun and hilarious to play together as a family. My 3-year old was able to pick up the mechanics of the game after about 3 games, though he still has a hard time holding his cards without showing them to us, so we have to employ a little creative cheating/non-cheating when playing with him. My 1 1/2-year old can even play Go Oink® with us when someone is helping because she can make the animal sounds! The cards are sturdy and mostly durable; we’ve only had one get permanently creased after being sucked on for about 5 minutes by my teething daughter. The illustrations on the cards are colorful and cute and for Go Ape®, are fairly easy to mimic.

play

I would HIGHLY recommend these games to anyone who loves to play games as a family. They are playable for ages 3+ and would even be funny with a group of adults. We have LOVED both games and will continue to play them as long as we can. Seriously, I don’t even mind playing them multiple times a day, unlike some other games I’ve already mentioned 🙂 You can purchase them online or at select brick-and-mortar retailers (JoAnn Fabrics and Sears are some I saw in a quick online search). The games are $9.99 in the cute Ape– or Pig-shaped carrying case, but just the Go Ape® cards by themselves are only $6.99–what a deal! Seriously, go check these games out and have fun with your family tonight!

Enter below to win either Go Ape® or Go Oink®!

I’ve been hesitant in writing this post for a while now.  Mostly because I don’t want it to be taken the wrong way.  So here’s the disclaimer:  Please don’t take it the wrong way.

Last week was the Race For The Cure here in St. Louis.  You know… the big race for breast cancer awareness and to raise loads of money for the cure.  Back in 2003 I even participated in the Komen race in San Antonio, but over the years I’ve developed some resentment towards the whole thing.  Okay this time of year just makes me cringe.  There’s tons of media coverage.  The presence is all over the internet.  Women wearing pink shirts that read, “Fight Like A Girl” are all over the place.  Pink ribbons:  Everywhere.  As you will discover later in this posting… a false sense of security.

Don’t get me wrong. (This is where you shouldn’t take any of the above the wrong way.)  Breast cancer IS horrible.  It’s unfair.  It can strike anyone at anytime.  I dislike the pain it causes individuals and families with every fiber of my being.  BUT.  There’s more than just pink ribbons.  There are yellow (bone cancer), white (lung cancer), grey (brain cancer), green (lymphoma), black (melanoma), and so many others.  All different shades. Women (and men) are struck by more than just breast cancer.

When my nana survived colon cancer and then brain cancer I felt enormously blessed.  She was left with some major deficits, remotely not the same person she was, but she is still here with us.  We are able to spend time with her.  My children know who she is.  Nana was recently able to meet her great niece.  All things that wouldn’t be possible if cancer had taken her life.

Then the real kicker in my life occurred.  My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma the beginning of January 2012.  One week after our little girl was born.  I was initially in shock.  Couldn’t believe that this was happening just a few short years after our family dealt with brain cancer of a loved one.  I also couldn’t believe that it was happening to my mom.  Then that false sense of security kicked in.  My mom was going to be just fine.  She was going to do the treatments, rid her body of the blood cancer, and we would never have to think of it again.  After all, breast cancer was “the only” non curable type of cancer.  That’s what the big race is all about.  Finding the cure for breast cancer.

Sure I took loads of health classes before getting my degree in college.  I shouldn’t have been that clueless, I should have put two and two together, but somehow I remained oblivious to the facts.  Other cancers have no cure.  Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma has no cure.  LLS has walks, races, and other events, but I honestly never heard about them until my mom was diagnosed.  I probably knew that the cause existed, but I never saw documentation in the media.  I’ve only ever saw pink everywhere.  Lots and lots of pink.  May we all remember that there are more than just pink ribbons out there.  People are fighting all sorts of cancer.  Women get more than just breast cancer.

My mom still has Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.  She is a fighter, but she is living with cancer.

I’m so very proud of my mom.  She underwent six months of rigorous chemotherapy in 2012.

Now she goes every two months for maintenance chemo.

She fights like a girl wearing green.
