Remember that little ‘ole government shut down that took place… Oh, back in October?  Well, we were actually on vacation when that whole thing went down.  Yep.  On Day #2 of our vacation to be exact.  Our vacation to…  Wait for it… The Smoky Mountains NATIONAL Park.  Day #1 we went into the park just fine.  Day #2 we were greeted by this:

Talk about throwing a wrench in someone’s plans.

Fortunately for us there are tons of other fun things to do in the Smoky Mountains area besides the park!  Prior to making the trip to Tennessee we were invited to attend the Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Show.  So even if the park had been open we were still going to attend the show.  Dinner.  Great show.  How can you pass that up?  Well, it ended up being such an amazing show!  Lots of laughs and delicious food to help us get over not being able to go back into the park.  🙂   Plus, it’s fun for the entire family!

Even the grounds of the theater are fun:

Now back to the show and the food…

Everything is served family style and it’s what you would expect out of a real Southern feast:

  • Feudin’ Fried Chick’n
  • Open Pit Pulled -to-Pieces Pork Barbeque
  • Southern Style Creamy Soup
  • Smashed Mashed Taters
  • Buttery Corn on the Cob
  • Keep It Comin’ Cornbread
  • No Tellin’ What’s In It Coleslaw
  • Granny’s Famous Specialty Dessert

We couldn’t even eat it all!  You are given plenty of time to eat before the show starts.  That way you can really focus on the entertainment.

The story of the Hatfields and McCoys is told in a way that I had never heard before.  So that kept it interesting!  In terms of entertainment there’s music, dancing, “fighting”, romance, and a great story line.  It all comes together for a feuding good time!

Will we go back to this Pigeon Forge, Tennessee show next time we are in the Smoky Mountains?  Most definitely!  The kids loved it and it was definitely one of the best shows around.  Stay tuned for my thoughts on another great show…  The Smoky Mountain Opry!  🙂

Little Pim Language DVDs {Giveaway}–CLOSED

There are several things in life that I learned while I was younger, decided I was “too busy” for them, quit, and now regret it. Playing the piano is one (seriously, what was I doing when I was 12 that made me “too busy” to practice?!), and learning Spanish is another. I took three years of Spanish in high school, and two semesters in college, but never kept up with it by practicing, so naturally, most of the Spanish I know is reduced to the menu at Taco Bell. Scientific research has shown that babies, toddlers and preschoolers are born able to learn more than one language with ease, so it makes sense to expose your children to language learning at a very early age. With this in mind, Little Pim was created.

Little Pim was created by Julia Pimsleur Levine, who was inspired by her own bilingual childhood. She knows how important it is for children to be bilingual in our global world and developed a new method of learning called The Entertainment Immersion Method. According to the website,

“Each of our educational DVDs has a unique, child-friendly theme, such as eating, playtime and feelings. The method teaches 360 words and phrases, providing the essential building blocks for language learning. A child only needs 500 words to be considered “conversational” in a language. Babies, toddlers and kids respond enthusiastically to Little Pim’s format, which combines animated and live-action videos.”

Little Pim is the leading method of teaching children a second language, and I can see why! We chose to review a DVD in Spanish and were sent Disc 6 of the Spanish series, “I Can Count!” The first time we watched it, my 3 1/2 year old was hooked. He laughed at the Panda and his friends, and seemed to be really engrossed in the Spanish parts. When the movie was over, I saw him look at me, get a sneaky look on his face, then walk over to the DVD remote. I didn’t know what he was doing (obviously something naughty), until he pressed the play button and started the movie over again! The second time through he was repeating phrases and actually counting in Spanish. I couldn’t believe it! We’ve watched it a few times since, but haven’t watched it in a week or so, yet just today I heard him count his chicken nuggets in Spanish at lunch!  I am sold.
DVD

Each DVD is around 30 minutes long, and features silly cartoon sections with Little Pim and his friends, and then the instructional parts with videos of real people and things. The quick cartoon pieces with Little Pim and his friends are fun and instantly hooked my kids,  keeping them interested. The Spanish instruction parts are pretty clear, showing a video of something, sometimes circling it in red, and then saying its name in Spanish. Most of the time my son would know what it was they were pointing to, though occasionally it was slightly unclear; for instance, he’d say “feet” but they were really saying the word for “toes.” Luckily, the DVD comes with subtitles in English so I could read along and help him out. You can see samples of videos in every language here, or you can watch a short video about Little Pim below:

Little Pim has so many products to choose from, including Gift Sets in all languages, Digital Downloads so you can watch the DVDs on your smartphone or tablet, and Apps in several languages for the iPhone/iPod, iPad and LeapPad. Jade Heart at Chicago Dramatists ***ENDED***

I LOVE Chicago!  I LOVE the theater!  So if you team the two things together then I’m one very happy girl!  Over the weekend my husband and I had the opportunity to travel up to the Windy City.  We were invited up to view the world premiere of “Jade Heart” at Chicago Dramatists.

This theater has existed in Chicago for over 30 years now and very recently received acclaim when an original play from its stage opened on Broadway in NYC; “A Steady Rain”.  Chicago Dramatists is a charming theater.  It’s a smaller venue with less than 100 seats, but I loved the atmosphere.  In celebration of Chicago Dramatist’s 31st season a campaign has been launched to raise funding from those who are willing to donate just $31 each.  This is a great way to support the Arts!

“Jade Heart” is a new production from Playwright Will Cooper and is the story of a girl who questions who she truly is.  Jade was born in China, but adopted into an American family.  It depicts the struggles between a single mother, her (at times) challenging daughter, and a life seemingly placed in the middle of two worlds.  I think that it’s the perfect time of the year for this new play to debut, because it shows the relationship between a mother and child…where the mother states that “A family isn’t who births you.”  Through “Jade Heart” one can be reminded that regardless of cultural differences, a love between a woman and her adoptive child can grow strong.  I was particularly impressed by the feeling and emotion that the actors displayed.  They truly care about what they are bringing across to the audience.  “Jade Heart” is running at Chicago Dramatists now through May 30th.

One lucky winner is going to receive 2 tickets to see the production of “Jade Heart” at Chicago Dramatists!  If you aren’t living close enough to attend this production…please feel free to tell those you know who are.   Or enter to win for them!   🙂
