One of my favorite parts of being a product reviewer is getting to entertain my children with new, innovative, education, and really FUN activities and games!  One of my favorite games yet is this Pancake Pile-Up!™ Relay Game from Educational Insights.

pan1The jist of this game is to turn over an order card and start building your pancake stack by racing from griddle to plate with each new pancake in the sequence.  You can compete as a 2-man race and compile your pancake stack all on your own before your competitor, or you can make a team and have each person handle one pancake before handing off the spatula.  The first server or team to deliver up the order correctly wins!

My kids were totally engrossed in this!  There was no coercing on my part to get them involved or excited about this totally cool game.  The makers of this game knew just what would interest little kids!  The lights in their eyes while watching them figure out what comes next and scooping it onto their spatula was priceless!  What fun I had behind the camera while they played away.

IMG_9849Besides the cards and plates being bendable, this game is practically indestructible, which is a MUST if you want your games to last!  Nothing chokable, no pieces that constantly need fixed/changed/twisted, and zero beforehand set-up.  This game rocks.

Developmentally, I’m totally pleased.  The game is listed as appropriate for ages 4+, but my 3-year-old was having a ball and was entertained without ever getting frustrated.  “Little Brother” played right along, able to carry the pancakes on the spatula and stack them with his hands.  They were both able to practice gross motor skills by scooping, balance while carrying the cakes across the room, and coordination in stacking them atop another.

I’m so proud of “Rocket” and his budding math skills in paying attention to sequences.  We took the race aspect out, since he was basically playing by himself while the little brother tinkered, but I think bringing it out again with a playing adult would sure build excitement, and I can see how this would be a great game for building teamwork.

pan3“Rocket” just asked me, “Can we play the pancake game again?”

This Pancake Pile-Up!â„¢ Relay Game is sold for $17.99 and is available at www.educationalinsights.com and specialty stores.

Cabin fever, anyone?  My kids are practically climbing walls.  We had such a good daily trip-to-the-park routine going, but the cold weather can’t tempt any of us to stay out longer than we have to.  I feel like we’ve already played to capacity with all the indoor toys we own, so an opportunity to review a new (and education!) toy from Educational Insights came at the perfect time.

logo01Education Insights is a wonderworld of award-winning toys and games.  You can search by subject, category, theme, or brand to view ingenious after ingenious, and the variety of products is so vast.  From Sprout & Growâ„¢ Wonder Soil® to a 40 Smencils® Set, you’re bound to find just what you had in mind to foster a budding curiosity in your child or student.

After reading what this Hot Dots set is all about, I was 100% confident that my toddler would be interested, intrigued, and then excited to figure it out.  Marking pens, lights, sounds, and numbers is a winning combination with him.  These Dots Let’s Master sets are activity books and markers that range from grade levels Pre-K to Grade 3 in reading or math.

We reviewed the Hot Dots® Jr. Let’s Master Pre-K Math, which is intended for children ages 3-6.  I thought it was completely developmentally appropriate for my 3-year-old.  As you can see below, when the correct dot is pressed with the “puppy marker”, as my son calls it, it lights up in green and a positive statement can be heard.  If the wrong dot is pressed, you hear a “try again” or “that’s not right”.  I feel like the instant feedback is so encouraging and motivating for my boy to keep trying and to keep answering correctly.

There are 100 lessons of a big variety.  He’s not just counting and adding things; there are activities like picking out what things are similar, what happens next, and picking out shapes.  Some of these activities are hard to figure out what to do if you can’t yet read the directions, so having a parent near by to read the directions and explain the task is ideal, and this only makes this set more appealing to me.  This has become a learning activity that we can do together, where my son doesn’t get frustrated and it is easy to move on to another lesson, or go through the whole book if he wants.

In all, what a great toy!  The activities are not grueling for kids and the talking light-up pen is just the ticket!  I also love that this activity is completely transportable.  Its a notebook and a pen.  Everyone can fit that in their purse or backpack, and this could even make a great activity for a car ride.

And how affordable!  Each set is $24.99 and currently available exclusively at www.educationalinsights.com.
