Rock ‘N Learn Language DVD {Giveaway}

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Hey all, I’m back! I took some time off to pack and unpack a house, but I’m back with a few more great giveaways for you and your family! The first is from a company we know and love here on Dandy Giveaway, Rock ‘N Learn.

logo

Rock ‘N Learn is a company that creates educational DVDs for preschoolers through elementary-aged children, teaching topics such as math, reading, science, social studies, languages and test preparation. I’ve reviewed Rock ‘N Learn before on Dandy and liked the product. My kids enjoyed the movie and were learning at the same time, so that’s never a bad thing, right?

1st grade

What sets Rock ‘N Learn apart from other educational DVDs is their use of music in learning. With the Alphabet DVD that I reviewed last time, the characters would sing little songs for each letter which really helped cement the letter with the sound and other words that begin with that letter. I believe kids really can learn better through music, and my kids were definitely picking up on things quicker through the songs. However, this DVD was different.

Language DVD

I was sent a free copy of the “Learn a Language” DVD and was excited to see how quickly my children could learn new some new Spanish words through song (we chose to watch Spanish but there are five other languages on the DVD). But while where was a beat constantly in the background, they never sang any actual songs. The characters would point to or hold up a picture of an object (say a window) and then say the word in Spanish (“la ventana”). They would repeat each word twice and move on to another object in the room. They went through a whole house, pointing out common objects, and also went through the basic colors and numbers. They would repeat each section a few times as well to really cement the vocabulary.

language screen

I was disappointed that there wasn’t any singing, but my kids’ learning surely didn’t suffer! My 2- and 4-year old both caught on right away, saying the picture word in English as they held it up and said it in Spanish. By the end of the 37-minute DVD they were repeating some of the words in Spanish, too! About 30 minutes in, they were starting to get a little restless and bored, but they had definitely picked up on some new words and new skills.

language watch

Like I said, we chose to watch Spanish but you can also watch the same video with Mandarin Chinese, French, Italian, German and English as the language as well. Just think: you could teach your kid to speak 6 different languages for only $19.99! Rock ‘N Learn products can be found at teacher supply stores, specialty stores, Barnes & Noble and other online retailers. But if you shop through Rock ‘N Learn’s website, you can get 25% off your entire purchase with the code KR8822! So go fill your virtual shopping cart with the loads of educational DVDs that Rock ‘N Learn has to offer and start bragging about your trilingual baby genius 😉 Or enter this contest to win a DVD or CD of your own!

Collage Video–Ballet Beautiful {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Have any of you ever taken one of those Barre classes? I took ballet growing up and am currently teaching ballet and tap to 3-7 year olds, so I have always wanted to take one! I hear they’re pretty killer. I also hear they’re pretty pricey, which is probably why I’ve never been to one. So, in my search for ballet-inspired workouts, I came across Mary Helen Bowers’ Ballet Beautiful Series. I first tried a video out online and LOVED it, so when I found a bunch of her videos on Collage Video, I had to have one!

logo

You remember Collage Video, right? The super awesome, chock-full-of-every-type-of-workout-video-you-could-ever-want website? Yeah, it’s still awesome. It’s super easy to search for a specific video or to browse a type of workout (dance inspired, walking, circuit work, etc.) and find just the right DVD. If you are into workout DVDs then this is your one-stop shop, my friends.

ballet

So the video I reviewed was “Ballet Beautiful Cardio Fat Burn.” I’ll be honest: during the warm-up I couldn’t help but hate Mary Helen with her AMAZINGLY toned body. I mean, seriously, she has like every muscle perfectly defined but she’s still lean and graceful like a ballerina should be. I kept thinking, “This girl’s just lucky. She was born with a ballerina-perfect body and she probably doesn’t have to work at it. I could never look like her.” Once the workout began, I was singing an entirely different tune!

collage

This workout was HARD, but in a good way! I quickly appreciated Mary Helen for her strength and dedication to her art. I could tell that she earned every defined muscle through her exercises. The video is broken up into four 15-minute segments that start with an “Allegra” fat-burning interval (i.e. constant jumping and leg kicks) followed up by a mat workout that focuses on your arms, abs, butt and legs. Mary Helen likes to do four sets of eight counts of most exercises, and by set two I’d be dying but she was hardly breaking a sweat. She was cool as a cucumber the whole time, though I know she was working twice as hard as I was; her legs were straighter, her kicks were higher, and she held positions much longer than I could dream of. But she was good motivation to keep going and try harder–if she could do it, so could I!

me

Bottom line: I LOVED this DVD! I know I will never look exactly like her, but I think if I did this 60-minute DVD 3-4 times a week I could have beautifully sculpted arms, legs and abs in only a few months.  And after doing the same workout for a while, I would truly appreciate the option to workout to the music only (beautiful Beethoven melodies) without Mary Helen’s instruction. If you want to look like a long, lean ballerina, this is the DVD to try! Ballet Beautiful Cardio Fat Burn can be purchased on CollageVideo.com, along with several other Ballet Beautiful/Ballet-inspired DVDs. But you can try to win this video (or another of your choice) for FREE today!

Copy-Kids {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

My kids are snack monsters. They eat breakfast and are asking for snacks no more than an hour later. We do the usual–crackers, apples, fruit snacks, granola bars, etc.–but I know they should be eating more fruits and especially vegetables in place of some of those carby foods. But, as most of you probably have experienced, getting kids to eat fruits and veggies can be tricky. That’s where Copy-Kids comes to the rescue!

logo

Copy-Kids is a DVD that is focused on getting kids to eat fruits and vegetables. According to their website, “this product is a positive approach in the quest to get children eating healthy from the start.”  The idea behind the video is that kids will see other kids eating healthy foods and will want to copy them and eat the foods themselves. The film’s producer witnessed this phenomenon with her daughter and decided to try it on a large scale with other children through a video. I can tell you that it works!

dvd

The DVD features 12 7-minute segments, one for bell pepper, carrots, raspberries, broccoli, bananas, strawberries, tomato, cucumber, orange, avocado, apple, and blueberry. Several different adorable kids are filmed (unscripted) eating these foods and the result is hilarious! There’s one girl in the video who laughs hysterically throughout half the video, and both of my kids liked the “laughing girl.” They also liked trying to figure out what the kids were saying while they were talking and eating (not the best habit to emulate, but hey, if it gets them eating veggies…). At the end of the video, there is a discussion about eating healthy with Pediatrician Jay Gordon and some adorable outtakes with the kids. You can see a small clip of the video here:

Besides being hilarious, the video is very effective. My 4-year-old son wanted some veggies within the first 5 minutes of watching the movie. Both kids ate raw zucchini, which they’d only ever had cooked, but they wanted to eat it crunchy like the kids in the video. My two-year old was asking for avocado during the avocado section, but sadly, we didn’t have any, so she settled for raw broccoli instead (!).  Needless to say, we love the DVD and stand by its claim to get kids to eat healthier 100%!

The Copy-Kids DVD can be purchased on Amazon or Copy-Kids.com for $19.95, with free shipping direct from the website. But one lucky winner will receive a DVD for free, just by entering below!

Rock ‘N Learn {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

My kids learn from music. It’s scary how quickly they both can remember a song, a rhyme or even instructions when given in song form. I actually have to be really careful what we listen to on the radio because they will remember things after the first go-through, and it’s usually the things you don’t want them to remember! So when I found this company, Rock N Learn, I knew it was for us!

logo

Rock N Learn is a series of educational DVDs, CDs and Apps dedicated to teaching children through music. They sell DVDs that teach everything from early childhood learning to science, math, reading and even foreign languages. Most of the songs are all in the style of rock, but for math and social studies they also offer rap and country DVDs. Those are some our family would never purchase, but I’m sure someone out there would 🙂

1st gradeearly

Their website is really easy to navigate–you can search for DVDs by Subject or by Age, and there is a special tab for their Mobile Apps, iBooks, and Albums available for download on iTunes. And the variety of products they offer is fabulous. Here’s just a sample: Phonics,  Money and Money Changing, Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Getting Ready for Kindergarten, Math Word Problems, Physical Science, the Solar System, States & Capitals, and lots more. They also sell some of their Preschool & Kindergarten titles as Books with CDs, which my son is SUPER into recently, so I love that option.

DVD

I was sent a copy of the Alphabet DVD to review. My almost-4-year old has known his alphabet for a long time, so I thought he’d be bored with it. But the first time we watched it he was glued. I like that along with showing a picture of the letter (both upper and lower case) and saying the letter name, they show pictures of other words that start with that letter and spell out the word below the picture.  I think this helped extend the video from being just for “babies” to “big kids” (in his words). Another cool thing about this video was that at the end, once they’d gotten through all the letters, they had some letter games. One game was recognizing letters in different fonts, and another was the “Name Game,” where you stand up when the first letter of your name is on the screen. Also, at the very end they show how to write each letter on a chalkboard. This is especially appropriate for my older kid who is learning to write, but a little over-the-top for my two-year old who is just learning her letters. Because of that, I would say the video caters to a wide variety of skills and ages.

Screen

The animation is nothing spectacular, but it kept my kids interest for the 35 minutes of the DVD. The songs were also less “rock” and all started to sound the same after a while, but again, my kids enjoyed it and I know they were learning, so I can handle it. Let’s just say it’s not a DVD I would pop in and watch on my own time 🙂 Here’s a sample of the Alphabet DVD I reviewed. You can preview most DVDs on the individual pages on their website.

Rock N Learn products can be purchased at Rocknlearn.com and on Amazon.com. The prices are pretty reasonable–$19.99 for DVDs, $12.99 for CDs with Books, $3.00 for Books, and some Apps are even free!  They even sell some DVDs in groups, like the 1st & 2nd Grade Collection, at a discounted bundle price. Right now Rock N Learn is offering YOU a discount code for 25% off on any products on their website. Just enter the code JQ7711 at Checkout.  But for one really lucky reader, they are offering a DVD or CD of your choice!

Little Pim Language DVDs {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

There are several things in life that I learned while I was younger, decided I was “too busy” for them, quit, and now regret it. Playing the piano is one (seriously, what was I doing when I was 12 that made me “too busy” to practice?!), and learning Spanish is another. I took three years of Spanish in high school, and two semesters in college, but never kept up with it by practicing, so naturally, most of the Spanish I know is reduced to the menu at Taco Bell. Scientific research has shown that babies, toddlers and preschoolers are born able to learn more than one language with ease, so it makes sense to expose your children to language learning at a very early age. With this in mind, Little Pim was created.

logo

Little Pim was created by Julia Pimsleur Levine, who was inspired by her own bilingual childhood. She knows how important it is for children to be bilingual in our global world and developed a new method of learning called The Entertainment Immersion Method. According to the website,

“Each of our educational DVDs has a unique, child-friendly theme, such as eating, playtime and feelings. The method teaches 360 words and phrases, providing the essential building blocks for language learning. A child only needs 500 words to be considered “conversational” in a language. Babies, toddlers and kids respond enthusiastically to Little Pim’s format, which combines animated and live-action videos.”

French gift set

Little Pim is the leading method of teaching children a second language, and I can see why! We chose to review a DVD in Spanish and were sent Disc 6 of the Spanish series, “I Can Count!” The first time we watched it, my 3 1/2 year old was hooked. He laughed at the Panda and his friends, and seemed to be really engrossed in the Spanish parts. When the movie was over, I saw him look at me, get a sneaky look on his face, then walk over to the DVD remote. I didn’t know what he was doing (obviously something naughty), until he pressed the play button and started the movie over again! The second time through he was repeating phrases and actually counting in Spanish. I couldn’t believe it! We’ve watched it a few times since, but haven’t watched it in a week or so, yet just today I heard him count his chicken nuggets in Spanish at lunch!  I am sold.
DVD

Each DVD is around 30 minutes long, and features silly cartoon sections with Little Pim and his friends, and then the instructional parts with videos of real people and things. The quick cartoon pieces with Little Pim and his friends are fun and instantly hooked my kids,  keeping them interested. The Spanish instruction parts are pretty clear, showing a video of something, sometimes circling it in red, and then saying its name in Spanish. Most of the time my son would know what it was they were pointing to, though occasionally it was slightly unclear; for instance, he’d say “feet” but they were really saying the word for “toes.” Luckily, the DVD comes with subtitles in English so I could read along and help him out. You can see samples of videos in every language here, or you can watch a short video about Little Pim below:

Little Pim has so many products to choose from, including Gift Sets in all languages, Digital Downloads so you can watch the DVDs on your smartphone or tablet, and Apps in several languages for the iPhone/iPod, iPad and LeapPad. If you follow Little Pim on facebook, twitter and pinterest, you can receive special discounts and offers. If you can’t decide which set to buy just yet, enter our giveaway to try one out first!

Marshall Publishing Trucks DVDs {Review}

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.
He fought it.  It wasn’t Blue’s Clues, so he was skeptical of it being anything good, but within 5 seconds, he was hooked.  Line and sinker.  “Rocket” was completely entranced by a DVD of all sorts of trucks doing fantastic things.  This DVD, appropriately called “Lots and Lots of Trucks” has since become the favorite movie of choice around here, thank you Marshall Publishing!
logo
The moment you turn on one of these DVD’s, you are greeted with catchy music that instantly captures the attention of any toddler.  They are quick paced, spending only a few seconds on each frame.  Each DVD is just as friendly and happy as the last!
yhst-59124551425647_2248_26982703
The first DVD we watched was Lots and Lots of Trucks, and just like the title says, it was filled with lots and lots and LOTS of trucks!  What an extensive amount of never-repeating footage of trucks doing all sorts of things, in a huge variety of different locations.  It is such a buffet of visuals, and very entrancing!
yhst-59124551425647_2248_35332468
And just as I thought no video would replace the awesomeness of the Trucks DVD, “Lots and Lots of Fire Trucks” was just as fantastic.  These movies have just the right amount of dialogue–not too much talking to bore little kids.  We really liked the friendly fireman on the fire trucks DVD.  There is sure an extensive collection of footage!  These clips were not filmed in a single day.  They span thousands of miles and easily over a hundred different vehicles doing all sorts of things.  There are great sound affects and fun slide transitions from video clip to video clip. I tell you, these are so entertaining!
yhst-59124551425647_2246_12639036 yhst-59124551425647_2248_39418320
Last, we enjoyed some Lots and Lots of Monster trucks.  Pretty exciting stuff!  Very impressive monsters.  The Monster Truck Classics DVD is probably suited for ages 3 or 4+, as there is more dialogue throughout, and not the same catchy tunes in the background as the other DVDs.  The feature includes history about how monster trucks came to be and interviews with the truck drivers/builders.  It is evident that it was filmed within the last 25 years, but the title is “classics”, after all, which make them timeless!  My boy was still enthralled, even with the host commentators narrating the show instead of catchy songs in the background.  Most of the action takes place in superdomes and stadiums across North America and Australia.  The mud run races were pretty great, and I must say I’ve never seen something quite like it!  Near the end is a visit to see the world’s biggest truck at the time, and the car show at the end was fun.  It concludes with some impressive drag racing, for a total of appox. 3 hours among the three programs.
IMG_2181 copy
The real cherry on top was the two CDs included in this set of videos.  My boy squealed in delight when it turned it on in the car after he had watched the videos inside.  He clapped to the music of “Lots and lots of fire trucks”, and I am just SO relieved to be listening to something other than animal songs!  Great sound, the words are clear, and the voices are fun to sing along with.
So what do I think?  I think you have a little boy who is at all into trucks, fire trucks, monster cars, jets, planes, trains, or moving things in general, these are terrific DVDs for your child’s collection.  They are eye-candy for a busy little mind who love to watch things that go!  And a two-DVD set for $19.95 is pretty dandy.  Especially because these are not available in stores.  These would make great birthday gifts!
And I just got a sweet tip to keep checking their website for new arrivals this summer – Lots of Roaring Rockets and Alphabet and Counting Songs!  How fun!

Friends Prize Pack {Giveaway} – CLOSED

My friends and I were actually discussing the greatest TV show ever yesterday:  Friends.  We all LOVED that show and lived for that  Thursday night line up on NBC.  This was pre DVR people.  If we didn’t watch it in real time then we would have to break out the VCR to tape it.  Wow.  I’m feeling old now.  I’ll bet many of you are too.  🙂  What else did my friends and I discuss in regards to the Friends show?  Well… Being teens of the 90’s we got our fashion styles from Rachel and Monica.  We wore the bodysuits under overalls.  (I must confess that yesterday I forgot the word for bodysuit and actually referred to it as a onesie.  Oh I am indeed a mom now!)  We wore the plaid skirts with the leather buckles and giant safety pins.  We had the hairstyles.  Yes, I had the “Rachel” hairstyle.  It’s true, but I don’t have a picture on hand to prove it.  Maybe one day I’ll share it with you…  😉

For the time being you can reminisce with some of the show clips here:

And…

Prima Princessa presents the Nutcracker DVD {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Ballet used to be a huge part of my life!  I took classes for a number of years and even studied on pointe shoes for a while.  I had dreams of studying ballet in college and would dream and draw and think of nothing else!

As every ballerina knows, the Nutcracker is a big deal.  How pleased I was to get this opportunity to review an adorable movie all about the Nutcracker!  And It was darling!  The little dancing girls kept my toddler enthralled!  The sweet “Prima Princessa” character has a perfectly enthusiastic narrator voice and asks interactive questions throughout.

“Become a ballerina! Prima Princessa brings you England’s world famous Birmingham Royal Ballet performing excerpts from The Nutcracker that will inspire the ballerina in you! Come join in the holiday fun with Prima Princessa as she takes you to a magical show filled with snow fairies, toy soldiers, tutus, pirouettes and plies.”

The ballet clips themselves from the Birmingham Royal Ballet were beautiful!  Truly a premiere ballet company with exquisite costumes and choreography.  It took me back to all my childhood Nutcracker dreams.  I couldn’t take my eyes away!  I loved being able to see the dancing from up close, since everytime I’ve seen the Nutcracker (which is many!), I’ve been in the nosebleeds, or atleast far enough back in the audience to miss the terrific facial expressions on these dancers.

Between clips of the Nutcracker are interactive sections that encourage the kids to try out ballet steps.  I can only imagine how this would entertain a room full of little girls at a sleepover!  Mid-movie, I had to go to the computer and see what other movies Prima Princessa has.  Turns out they also have a Sleeping Beauty and a Swan Lake movie, as well as other fun things to look up, like where to buy little ballet tutus!  How perfect!

Such a darling and educational video for little ones!  I think it would make a wonderful Christmas present or stocking stuffer for girls ages 3-7.

Oh how it put me in the Christmas mood!  What a treat for ME to watch, as a mom!  You can buy it HERE on amazon for $6.99!  Honestly, if you have a little girl who loves ballet, just get all three for $19.87!  Give one to her for her birthday, Easter, and Christmas!  Also, the Prima Princess Blog has some fun activities and ideas for moms and their daughters.

I am thrilled to have Prima Princessa the Nutcracker in our DVD collection, and also thrilled to announce that one lucky winner will receive this same darling movie!
