HIC Oven–to-Table Transitionals {Review}

If you have been on a cruise recently, you probably know what I mean when I say, “chocolate melting cake”.  If you’re like us, and have tried for months and years to recreate that recipe without any luck, listen in!  We’ve found the perfect imitation recipe!  And I think the key difference in our success was cooking them in our new beautiful porcelain ramekins from HIC – Brands that Cook!


When my husband came home and I pulled these out of the box, he exclaimed, “molten lava cake?!”.  Haha, indeed, we have an ultimate favorite dessert around here, and HIC just made our dessert dreams come true.  Previously, we’ve made our lava cakes in giant muffin tins, but methinks it doesn’t create an even cooking medium like porcelain ramekins.  Previously, we’ve had to dump out our cakes unless we all want to huddle around the ugly muffin tin.  Not so cool when we have guests over for dessert.


These ramekins are just the ticket–they are just so pretty!  They are called Oven-to-Table Transitionals because, just like they say, they can go straight from the oven, to the table.  Aka, the cooking dish IS the serving dish, and the beautiful red high-fired scratch-free glaze makes it as lovely and appealing as the food inside.


These ramekins are top quality!  They are solid, sturdy, and have a good weight.  The glaze is excellently finished, and the textured sides are great for handling.  They washed up as nice as new, and didn’t leave any stains or residue.  There are no rough places or paint imperfections, and the paint is so deep and vibrant!

Whether you’re planning a ham, turkey, or even a goose as the centerpiece for your Christmas dinner menu, you need a variety of other mouthwatering dishes that invite everyone to indulge and enjoy the season. Delicious Christmas desserts are an essential part of your holiday table.

As you select your Christmas dinner recipes, don’t forget to pick out a complementary dessert to finish off the evening. Choose one of these three options that all bring in the rich flavors of the season. Any of these sweet treats will ensure that everybody leaves the dinner table content, and you may even have people ask you to make the desserts again after the Christmas season is over!

Moist and Chocolate-y Mousse

Rich, decadent chocolate mousse gives guests a reason to savor every bite of this mouthwatering dessert. The whipped cream and raspberries on top speak to the colors of the season, and you can even add a sprig of fresh mint to each serving to bring in the green. Perhaps the best part is that the mousse simple to make, requiring only 15 minutes of active prep time, which gives you plenty of time to focus on other parts of your Christmas dinner menu.

What You Need

  • 1-1/2 cups fat-free milk, divided

  • 2 oz. semi-sweet chocolate

  • 1 pkg. chocolate instant pudding

  • 2 cups thawed whipped topping, divided

  • 1/2 cup fresh raspberries

Make It

  • MICROWAVE 1 cup milk and chocolate squares in large microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min.; whisk until chocolate is melted. Add remaining milk and dry pudding mix; beat 2 min. Refrigerate 20 min.

  • WHISK in 1-1/2 cups whipped topping; spoon into 6 dessert dishes.

  • TOP with remaining whipped topping and berries.

Cranberry and Orange Trifle

Get out your best trifle bowl for one of the most stunning Christmas desserts you can make. It’s even pretty enough to take center stage on your holiday table. The bright flavors of cranberry and oranges mix with dense, buttery pound cake and rich vanilla pudding for a mouthwatering dessert to end your holiday meal. If you don’t have a trifle bowl, consider making individual trifles in dessert cups instead.

What You Need

  • 2 cups boiling water

  • 1 pkg. (0.6 oz.) cranberry flavor gelatin

  • 1 cup cold water

  • 2 pkg. (1 oz. each) vanilla flavor instant pudding

  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

  • 2 cups cold milk

  • 1 tub (8 oz.) whipped topping, thawed

  • 1 pkg. (13.6 oz.) prepared fat-free pound cake, cut into 1/2-inch cubes

  • 1 can (11 oz.) mandarin oranges, drained

Make It

  • ADD boiling water to gelatin mix in medium bowl; stir 2 min. until completely dissolved. Stir in cold water. Pour into 13×9-inch pan. Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm. Cut into 1/2-inch cubes.

  • BEAT pudding mixes, cinnamon and milk in large bowl with whisk 2 min. Let stand 5 min. or until thickened. Stir in whipped topping.

  • REMOVE 1 cup gelatin cubes; set aside. Layer half each of the remaining gelatin cubes, cake cubes, oranges and pudding in 3-qt. serving bowl. Repeat layers; top with reserved gelatin cubes. Refrigerate 1 hour.

White Chocolate-Mint Cheesecake

Candy canes aren’t just for kids, and this easy Christmas dessert flawlessly incorporates the flavor of the season into a moist and rich cheesecake. You’ll have guests savoring every creamy bite and gathering graham cracker crust crumbs from every corner of their dessert plates. Make the cheesecake earlier in the day, or even the day before, to give you plenty of time to focus on your Christmas side dishes and main course.

What You Need

  • 1-1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

  • 3 Tbsp. sugar

  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

  • 4 pkg. (8 oz. each) cream cheese, softened

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1/4 tsp. peppermint extract

  • 1 cup sour cream

  • 4 squares white chocolate, melted

  • 4 eggs

  • 1 cup thawed whipped topping

  • 16 miniature candy canes

Make It

  • HEAT oven to 325°F.

  • LINE 13×9-inch pan with foil, with ends of foil extending over sides. Mix graham crumbs, 3 Tbsp. sugar and butter; press onto bottom of pan. Bake 10 min.

  • BEAT cream cheese, 1 cup sugar and extract in large bowl with mixer until well blended. Add sour cream and chocolate; mix well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, mixing on low speed after each just until blended. Pour over crust.

  • BAKE 40 min. or until center is almost set. Cool. Refrigerate 4 hours. Use foil handles to lift cheesecake from pan before cutting to serve. Top each piece with a dollop of whipped topping and candy cane.
