MOLO Microwave Cover {Giveaway}

Have you ever had the power go out and only then realize just how much you use your microwave every day? Between hot dogs for lunch, veggies for dinner and maybe a warmed-up snack or two in between, I use my microwave at least 5 times a day. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t live without it! I’ve never used any kind of microwave cover, however, and after recently spending about 15 minutes scrubbing splattered food off the inside walls, I realized it was time to make some changes!

Enter the MOLO: Moisture Lock Microwave Coverâ„¢. The MOLO is more than just a microwave cover. It has a secret compartment that holds water to keep your food moist (hence the name) while it cooks, as well as protecting from splats and explosions. Sounds simple, right? Kind of makes you wonder why no one thought of something like this before!

So, does it really work? It does! I’ve used it several times now to steam veggies, cook frozen veggies and reheat leftovers. I’ve been happy with the consistency of the steamed veggies and even happier that I’m not leaching chemicals into my food by cooking them with plastic wrap over the top. I find that when I’m heating frozen veggies I don’t have to add as much water to the bowl because of the steam that is already in the MOLO when I microwave. That means less water that I have to drain off before serving the veggies, and less time to the table equals a happier family 🙂

These carrots were perfectly cooked; soft and moist with no weird dry spots on any of them. I forgot to take a picture before I set them on the table and my rabbit-family gobbled them up before I could stop them! But believe me when I say they all looked like this:

I even put the MOLO to the ultimate test: I reheated restaurant french fries! I’ve tried this before with several disastrous, disgusting results. The fries are either limp and soggy or hard and overcooked and usually broiling hot when bitten into. I nuked some fries from Red Robin yesterday with the MOLO covering the plate and the result was quite pleasing! Microwaved fries can never come close to the fresh stuff, but these were delightfully edible. I even ate a few, and I NEVER eat reheated fries (for the reasons stated above). Obviously, my kids ate them, no problem.

My only complaint about the MOLO is that when you go to grab your food out of the microwave, you have to hold the MOLO straight or the water inside the moisture holder will spill out and onto your food, the inside of the microwave or your counter. I’m sure as I get used to using it and with some finessing I’ll be able to get my food out without spilling every time. But so far my microwave has stayed perfectly clean and my food has been nicely moist, so I’m happy! You can buy a MOLO of your own at Dingware.com for $19.99, with free shipping to the US. Last January, my husband was selected to attend the Marine Security Guard training that will take place this December, and the completion of that course means that he’ll be stationed at an Embassy somewhere in the world in March 2014.  The best part of this billet?  We all get to go with him!

I’ve been beside myself with excitement since we found out about it, and this year-long wait has been so excruciatingly long.  The best way that I’ve found to pass the time on those nights when my mind keeps racing and I can’t sleep because of the excitement of going to another country?  By perusing the U.S. Department of State website showing all of the embassy locations, of course!

I’m not too concerned that we’ll be sent to a location that will be unsafe for our family or that won’t provide for our basic needs, but I have to admit that I’ve worried about the amenities and conveniences that we’ll be leaving behind, especially if we go to a third-world country.  I was excited to find these Utensil Wipes available now and the upcoming Pacifier Wipes that will be out next year!

  • What are Utensil Wipes / Pacifier Wipes?  All natural wipes that should be used to clean surfaces that comes in contact with your mouth.
  • How are they different than other Wipes?  Many wipes on the market use alcohol, which have an unpleasant taste or stringent chemicals, and are not intended to come in contact with your mouth.
  • Are they safe?  Yes.  Obviously you should not intentionally ingest the liquid, the wipes, or the bags. But Pacifier and Utensil wipes are non-toxic, and when used properly help keep food contact items clean. The liquid is safe for human consumption after it dries on the surface. If you should ingest the liquid, drink milk and contact the hospital immediately.  The active ingredient in Utensil Wipes is 4% food grade lemongrass oil.

I’m sure that these will come in handy next year when we’re in any foreign country with three little boys ages 5 and under (!), but I can also think of a number of ways that these Utensil Wipes would be handy right now — outside or while camping, eating at fast-food restaurants, cleaning a favorite bowl/spoon/plate that hasn’t gone through the dishwasher yet, etc.

Head on over to the Utensil Wipes website, where you can learn more about their products, ask questions, and order these to try yourself!

Remember a couple of years ago when everyone was buying microfiber furniture?  And, usually, the number one reason that was given for buying furniture with this fabric was that you could quickly and easily wipe it clean, making it perfect for those with kids and pets?  Well, we bought in to it with our large dark brown sectional couch (that we absolutely love!) and have been pleased with the condition of our couch, especially considering the number of moves (including one cross-country move) and the six months that it sat in storage.

However, we bought a new-to-us dining set about a year ago, and it included microfiber chairs — not my favorite fabric for a dining set, especially with our youngest who really can be a tornado during a meal or snack.  I tried out an amazing solution that I found on Pinterest (you’d think that I’m paid to promote Pinterest with the number of times I mention it on this site, but it really has just changed my life that much!) that included spraying rubbing alcohol all over the fabric, scrubbing it clean, then brushing the fibers back up.  Worked like a charm!  Until, of course, the next meal.

I was so excited to receive ViveVita’s Everyday Elegance Chair Covers in the mail that I immediately ripped open the package and stuck them on my seats!  They match the color of my chairs so well and are comfortable.  I wasn’t sure what I’d think about having the cover on only the seat part of our chairs, but I actually like it better than I thought I would — one of the things that I don’t like about slipcovers is feeling like your whole body moves every time you have to shift, but this isn’t an issue at all with Everyday Elegance Chair Covers.

 Our chairs also have microfiber fabric on the back, and I was concerned that I’d still have to clean off the chairs as frequently as before.  I haven’t noticed this to be much of a problem, though, as most of our spills occur on the seat of the chair and not on the backs.  Although it would be nice to not have to wipe down the chairs at all, I think that the comfort and clean fit of these chair covers outweighs that desire.

And, the absolute best part is that they’re machine washable!  It’s easy to just take off the covers that need to be washed every week (or so…) and stick them in the laundry with a load of towels.  They quickly and easily attach to the chairs with a velcro strip, back again to catch any potential stains.
