9999 Stories from the Bible

by Juliet David
Illustrated by Elina Ellis

Try reading scriptures with your squirmy toddlers at night and see if they last for more than two verses.  Since we’ve started reading scripture stories from this cute composition of ninety nine stories from the Bible, my kids have been more and more willing to sit and learn the stories I know and love!

I really commend the author for writing these stories in a way that is easy for little children to understand, but they are not too watered down.  There have been children’s bibles in the past where I have not completely agreed with the interpretation of the author, but this edition jives with me and my beliefs.

What really makes this book wonderful are the friendly illustrations!  The artist’s style is pleasant, soft, and colorful in what looks like watercolors and crayon.  Every character has a sort of large-nose and wide-eyed look, which sounds odd, but looks so friendly!

With almost every story, there is one page of dialogue and narration along with one page of illustration in a double page spread.  That allows for 99 stories in 196 pages.  The hard back cover has really held up well, and the high-quality pages and printing are very well-done.

I’m glad we got this book back in November so that we could enjoy it nightly for the past three months!

9781859857663Bumper Wipe Clean Activities

by Juliet David; illustrated by Marie Allen

Our church service is three hours long every Sunday, and the first hour is spent in our chapel for “Sacrament Meeting”.  We sit as families and we all do our best to keep our kids of all ages quiet and seated.  Some days are much harder than others!  We mothers have all shared ideas and passed around the books and toys, but I know that I find myself continuously looking for even more sit-still-and-quiet activities for my rambunctious boys.

This Bumper Wipe Clean Activities book is super, super, super!   This is one of the best quiet books we’ve taken to church EVER, and I’m excited to tell you more about it.  First of all, kids love markers.  They write easier, darker, and brighter than crayons or colored pencils, so any activity that involves a marker is bound to be a winner.

There are 72 pages in this activity book!  Your little guy could spend a minute on each page and be occupied for well over an hour.   What makes it so intriguing is the huge variety in activities.  It seems like every page is something new, from mazes, dot to dots, spot the mistake, find the way, matching pairs, to hidden objects, etc. etc.

What I love about this activity book is that it is obviously not a one-time activity book.  The game is not over as soon as you’ve done every page.  Wiping it clean is fast and easy, and it makes for a brand new clean start from the beginning.  The marker comes off just by smearing it with your fingers, and I never needed to pass over it more than twice.  I imagine using a tissue, or even some windex if necessary, would be able to clean up any markings no matter long they’ve been left on.  I also like that the pages have a moderate to thick lamination, making them sturdy, hard to bend, and easy to clean.  Every page is full of bright colors, friendly drawings, and wonderful stories!

I love being able to bring this to church because of the bible stories that my son is getting more exposure to.  While he is also helping Jesus find his way to John the Baptist in a maze, he is being exposed to bible characters and stories, and hopefully becoming more and more familiar with this stories that I cherish.  This was a hit with both my boys (under 3), so surely it will entertain a wide variety of ages.

9781859859797My mother is a remarkable oil painter, and she has instilled in me a similar love for painting.  My boy has been watching me paint up little house projects and has been ever curious with the paints.  We started out with little cups filled with water and food coloring, but now he wants the hard stuff.  I am really trying to steer him away from playing with my acrylics because they are so dang messy!  A little bit goes a LONG way when toddler fingers get busy.  I’ve been wanting to try one of these painting books for awhile, so an opportunity to review the Bible Stories Painting Book 2 came at just the right time, and it seems to have satisfied his desire for some more adult-like paints.
This is a hefty little activity book, measuring 8.25 x 11.75 inches.  I was really surprised with the heavy card-stock weight of so many pages, and oh-so-happy that have activity that we can tote around with a big mess!  No jars, no paints kits, just a paintbrush and a small cup of water.
The front and the back cover each open to reveal two pages of paint palettes (so four pages in total), with a big variety of colors–more than just the standard red, orange, yellow, green, blue.  These swatches become paints when water is added, and the front swatches are identical to the back ones, so you’re not tempted to have all four open, but you have another helping of colors when the first paints are used up.  The blank inside pages can be ripped out and painted on an absorbent surface if they’re worried about colors bleeding through.  There are a 8 double-sided pages of coloring-book-style pictures (so 16 scenes in all), and they are the cute, simplified stories of the bible, starting with Adam & Eve and ending with the resurrection.  We made a fun little scripture-reading activity out of it, and the boy had a dandy time!  With the cardstock cover pages not laying completely flat, the water on the paint tended to run into the creases, but “Rocket” didn’t mind, and was still entertained for the good part of the morning!

And you probably guessed correctly that there was a Bible Stories Painting Book 1 before there was a Book 2.  Both of these are available HERE for $7.99.

9781859859315My toddler is crazy for stickers lately!  What toddler isn’t, right?  They’re one of the best sit-still tools I have in the diaper bag.  This delightful storybook of David & Goliath is spot on perfect for any little kid who loves books and stickers.

So you see the white cut out shapes on the front cover?  The entire book is set up in this fashion, with full-color illustrated pictures depicting the well-known story, and white shapes where the stickers are intended to go, so it becomes a sort of shape-matching activity at the same time.  The pictures are rather cute and have a hand-drawn appeal.

I like the way the story was summarized and simplified.  The storyline and dialogue is easy for children to follow along.  I also like the last sentence of the book, encouraging readers to go read the full story themselves in their bible.

Great vivid colors, pleasant character depictions, and high quality stickers!  A key feature is the glossiness of the pages, which allows the stickers to be peeled off and reapplied.  This also adds to the appeal of being more than a one-time-use activity.

There are 12 pages in all, and 4 pages of stickers, and recommended for ages 3 and up.  The size is just right to sit in the lap of a toddler, and the pages can stay open on their own when pressed.

The author, Karen Williamson, is a mother of three, and worked as a London primary school teacher before launching her career as a full-time writer.

I think this is a great activity for church!  I love that my kids can read bible stories while they are trying to be still and quiet.

You can purchase the book online HERE for $5.99, which is a totally acceptable price for the value and entertainment it will provide.
