Where does the time seriously go?  Only yesterday it seems that I was on bed rest and awaiting the arrival of our little “Banjo”.  How did he exactly become 5 years old already?  That’s mean I’m how old?  I shudder at the thought…  I am now the mother of a preschool graduate:

If the past 5 years went by this fast then very soon it will be junior high graduate, then high school graduate, and so on.  Slow down!  I did tell Banjo that he will have at least 3 more graduations in his life to end with college.  Hopefully there will be a second college level graduation added in there, because we aim high in this family.  😉

I do look forward to the coming years of graduations, but for now I just want to focus on the here and now…

My sweet ones just chilling together:

And of course remembering how they were just a little over a year ago:

No matter how many years go by they will always be my babies.  🙂

Nice Weather.

Today it’s in the 50’s.  Tonight and tomorrow we are supposed to receive a dumping from a massive snow storm.

We got out of the house today before the dumping arrives:

St. Louis Science Center

If you have never been to St. Louis then you really should come for a visit.  We have the some of the very best museums and a very dandy zoo.  And it’s all FREE!  So definitely worth the trip.  😉

Hopefully we won’t be snowed in tomorrow.  I’ll keep you posted…

Crazy St. Louis weather.

The weather has been a little out of control around here.  Last week we hit the 70’s.  Then we had tornado warnings mid week.  We woke up to quite a bit of snow on Sunday.  Banjo and Audi built a snowman.  By Sunday evening Frosty was hunching over.  Monday he continued to hunch and finally decided to just fall over altogether.  Today the snow is completely gone.  See what I mean?  Crazy weather.  It just needs to make its mind up already.  Is it going to be warm?  Is it going to be cold?  Weather, just stick with one please!  🙂

“Once there was a snowman, snowman, snowman,
Once there was a snowman, tall, tall, tall.
In the sun he melted, melted, melted.
In the sun he melted, small, small, small.”

That song is one of Banjo’s favorites!  The end.

Silence is not always so golden…

Or is it?  Sorry my dandy friends for being so MIA! I cannot believe that I’ve been so unusually quiet these last few weeks.  Usually I’m quite the talker.  😉  Or maybe you haven’t minded my quietness???  That’s okay, too.  At any rate I’ve missed checking in with all of you.  It was a very busy end to 2012 around here as I’m sure it was in all of your own lives.

We visited the Missouri Botanical Garden Holiday Trains with friends:

Our neighborhood has this wonderful tradition (since the 1960’s) that takes place ever year on Christmas Eve and Christmas night:

Today leaving Banjo at school was tough.  We haven’t talked to him at all about Friday’s senseless tragedy.  We don’t need to.  He’s only four, too young to understand, and is oblivious to the fact that it even happened.  This morning we were running behind and slowly getting out the door.  The back doors at his school are locked at 8 and we pulled into the parking lot at 8:02.  As I drove around to the front entrance Banjo asked why the doors to his school need to be locked.  Without even thinking I blurted out, “Oh it’s just to keep you safe”.  Like it was something as nonchalant as that.  I felt my stomach clinch as I contemplated why does any child need to be kept safe at school???  Parking the car I looked back to see his big brown eyes emitting this beautiful look of innocence.  I knew that I owed him a further explanation.  I would never want him to feel unsafe by the doors being unlocked.  I would never want him to worry that it was to keep the “bad guys” out.  So I told him that only people who go to school and want to learn are supposed to be there and that the locked doors just keeps it that way.  He’s four.  That’s all he needs to know.  Sometimes I wish that was all I needed to know.

Everyone lost something on Friday.  Some more than others, but as an entire nation we yet again lost our sense of security.  Over the weekend I felt a bit of fear taking grasp of my heart.  Why do these things happen?  How can we make it stop?  When will there be peace?  What can be done to keep my children safe?  So many questions.  Ultimately I concluded that I may not be able to control the actions of others, but I can maintain control from within my own home.  I can build a safe and secure place for my children.  I can cherish them and hug them just a little bit tighter every day; not just when tragedy strikes.

18685_10151208950680894_919219810_n

I must be strong for my children.  I cannot and will not live in fear.  I can overcome fear through faith and by learning to forgive.  The entire weekend I found myself reflecting on these two talks:  The Healing Power of Forgiveness, by James E. Faust and Do Not Fear, by Boyd K. Packer.  Both gave me resolve when I originally heard them and solace now.  I will rise above the fear.

As I picked Banjo up this afternoon I told his teacher that it was hard leaving him with her this morning and then thanked her for taking care of him.  She nodded in acknowledgement.  I couldn’t bring myself to say the words I was really thinking:  “Thank you for keeping him safe”.  I’m sure she understood.

Thinking of everyone in Newtown, Connecticut.  My prayers are with you!

School picture time!

On a side note we survived at being first timers to pink eye. Both Banjo and Ruby. At the same time. That was a nightmare.

Ruby took it like a champ and still kept her cute smile on her face!

It’s okay, Santa. I totally got this!

Clearly I was never a 4 year-old little boy, but who would have seriously thunk that this guy: Would cost $40?!  Real shocker, I know.
It all started with the visit with the man in red… Banjo couldn’t take his eyes off the jolly one and Ruby was just wondering what was going on.

Then the magical question was uttered. Whoever came up with the bright idea to have mall Santa ask the kiddos what they want him to bring for Christmas?  It definitely must have been someone with the last name of Hasbro or Mattel.  I mean it really puts us parents on the spot.  The kids aren’t just writing it down on paper to send up North.  It’s their moment to actually tell the big guy in person!  How did Banjo respond to that magical question?  With one item.  One very specific item. He wanted that yellow thing up above.  The yellow thing that we (ahem Santa) had no idea he wanted.  I thought we were done with our shopping.  Finished.  Complete.  But thanks to that jolly ‘ole elf I had to do some scrambling to avoid a total Santa fail.  Fortunately I was able to purchase that yellow thing online last night for over half off.  Otherwise we (the parents), not you Santa, would have been explaining to Banjo on Christmas morning how the elves must have ran out of parts to make Bumblebee. Oh and alright, Mr. Claus if that’s how you want to play then expect a visit from me at the mall before the 25th.  I’ll have a sit and tell you that all I want for Christmas is an iPad Mini.  Then if I don’t find it under the tree you will definitely have some explaining to do.

In all actuality I think we should start a revolution to

revise the script that mall Santa uses with our kids.

Who’s with me???  😉

For now it’s Me: 1, Santa: 0

Getting her to actually look at the camera was never going to happen. Pine needles are just too, too interesting to look at. Camera? Mom? Not interesting enough. But pine needles…

I’m so very thankful for my family even though everything is not always picture perfect.

Bed for Banjo

Well, it’s high time Banjo moves out of his toddler bed.  He will after all be 5 in April.  So he’s not a toddler anymore.  *sniff*  For the last few months Banjo has been begging us for a bunk bed.  What is with little boys and bunk beds, anyway?  All of his friends have one and he has been insisting that he needs it.  I think the appeal is that top bunk, but who wants a child to fly right off and break an arm???  This would be the 5 years working in the children’s emergency department speaking…  Audi does agree with this concern.  So I found this bed on Zulily:

It’s only $299!!  That’s a huge savings.  Plus, it’s only 46 inches off the ground, so our fears of falls are taken care of.  Audi approves and so Santa will be delivering this to our house especially for Banjo.  We figure he’ll use it for a couple of years and then we can sand and paint it for Ruby.  At that point I’m guessing I will be constructing a really cute girl’s playhouse out of felt to drape from the bed.  😉

You’ve been hearing all week about how I’m this total Zulily shopper.  I seriously love the savings I find there.  Remember if you are new to Zulily then you get $10 free to spend at Zulily!

Have a dandy weekend my friends!
