Shutter Huggers {Giveaway} – Closed

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I been trying my hand at photography for a couple of years now.  I love pictures, I love the camera and most of all I love taking pictures of the people I care about.  The thing is… kids are really hard to take pictures of.  If you’re in an interesting place the last thing a child wants to do is stand in place, look at the camera and hold a smile, at least not when there is so much to be explored!Since I have a semi decent camera and love taking pictures of people I often get these ideas in my head of taking my own family photos… and they generally end pretty badly.  What kid wants to smile at a camera on a tripod?

(Dandy Giveaway receives free products for review purposes and may sometimes be compensated for posts but all opinions expressed are 100% my own. See Dandy Giveaway’s disclosure policy for more details.)

Recently we traveled up the New England coast and saw some great lighthouses.  I really wanted family pictures at these lighthouses but when we attempted to take them they were an utter disaster.  Even having my parents along to help get the baby’s attention wasn’t good enough, he could have cared less about the camera. *Sigh*

This ended up being our best picture, because at least Dmitri was looking at the camera…

After our first failed attempt at picture my husband decided we had to try it again, the spot was so perfect and we won’t be living near lighthouses forever.  Literately an hour before we got in the car to take the second round of pictures, a package from Shutter Huggers arrived at my door.  (picture a happy dance due to awesome timing!)

Shutter Huggers are these awesome plush animals that fit around your camera or camera phone lens.  They are bright, fun and so much more interesting to look at than a plain camera.

Shutter Huggers sent me a dinosaur Shutter Hugger to review (what can I say, my kid has a thing for dinosaurs) and it was fantastic. The fabric is super soft so you don’t have to worry about it grinding against your camera if you accidentally hit the lens, the elastic is firm enough that it will stay put around your camera but it slides on and off easily, and the Shutter Hugger itself is bright and interesting… way more so than my camera alone.  The Shutter Hugger was easy for Dmitri to spot and he seemed to respond much better at being told to “look at the dinosaur” than he did to being told “look at the camera”.

Anyway, for family pictures I did my best to keep it hidden right up until “go” time with the camera, and it was amazing!  Yes, Dmitri was still a handful; he wiggled, squirmed, wanted “down”, wanted to play and was generally pretty exhausting, but when he smiled and sat still for two seconds he was looking at the dinosaur and we walked away with a few great pictures.

If you’ve got a little one that you love to photograph check out Shutter Huggers. They’ve got a bunch of adorable animals to choose from, Shutter Huggers that fit both cameras both big and small and even great little clip on animals for phone photos.

Thoroughly Modern Minis Bean Bag Cover {Giveaway} Closed

Etsy shop owners are really amazing people! The ones that make products to sell are really putting themselves and their talent out there for the world to see. Talented describes them in a word, I think. Melanie over at Thoroughly Modern Minis (TModernMinis) is no exception to this! She’s joining me to do a giveaway on a bean bag chair slipcover!

etsy

The slipcover is made to cover Dana’s, over at the blog Made, Rollie Pollie pattern. If you’re not much of a sewer but would really love to have your own Rollie Pollie, look no further than Melanie’s shop! If you’ve never heard of or are not interested in a bean bag chair these also double as a great storage space for all things soft.

IMG_5478

In the picture I have 3 large winter blankets, 1 twin comforter, and an extra decor pillow. I stuffed everything in the bag thinking it would be busting at the seams. It really only took up about half of the space available. I ended up grabbing Munchkin’s XL twin comforter and there was still a ton of room to spare! If you don’t have a ton of blankets lying around this would also be an amazing way to keep a load of stuffed animals together, and look cute in the process. Sometimes we go through spurts where he’s totally into playing pretend with his stuffed animals but mostly they just get thrown around and alway seem to be underfoot. He wasn’t sure what the bag was at first, but as soon as I told him I needed him to sit on it he flopped down and snuggled up

IMG_5479

Munchkin is about 45″ tall. This thing really is so big. I want to fill it up just so I can flop down next to him too! The rest of the evening was spent jumping off of our couches onto it. The boys loved rolling all over it. As for the actual cover, it’s stitched wonderfully and I can tell it will be able to stand up to the rough housing of two little boys. She worked with me on figuring out which fabric would suit my home decor ideas. It’s been a pleasure to work with her!

One lucky winner will win one Bean Bag Cover!

****Note, this is for the cover only. No pattern or filling of any kind is included****

BeginAgain Toys Dinosaur A-Z Puzzle {Giveaway}

I love wooden toys. I love how they don’t fade or break, how they have a little bit of substance when you hold them in your hand and how they last forever! By forever, I’m talking generations. My grandma has a freestanding wooden elephant puzzle in her house. It’s white and I think it has four or so pieces. My cousins and I adored it growing up. It was always out in the house, and as I grew up the silly elephant stuck around. I think my grandma ended up having to repainting it (possibly a number of times) because the white started to look a bit dingy with so many little hands carrying it around, but it never broke and it never grew old. Twenty years later my grandma still has that puzzle!

**This post may contain affiliate links which support Dandy Giveaway when you purchase through them, yet don’t cost you
anything extra. See Disclosure Policy for more information.**

I think I first saw BeginAgain Toys as part of a promotion for wooden toys, since I already love the idea of wooden toys I was pretty enthralled with the whole list but I was absolutely mesmerized by the BeginAgain Puzzles. I was hit with a wave of nostalgia seeing the free standing animal family puzzles (they even have an elephant!) and pulled in by the beauty and simplicity of their designs. The patterns on their puzzles are unique, the painting is colorful, and they’ve made them even better learning tools by having lettered pieces (uppercase and lowercase depending on the side of the puzzle you’re looking at).

Plus I can really get behind the BeginAgain company and their “Workshop Rules” aka moto for toys:

  1. Kids are the true noisemakers!
    – No batteries, no electronics, ever!
  2. Share your ideas, then build
    – Collaborate, share, and build in partnership.
  3. Don’t leave a mess
    – Take OIL out of play, use plant based materials whenever possible and always reduce, recycle, and seek improvement.
  4. Great products have greater purpose
    – BeginAgain gives 1% to the community.

I couldn’t wait to review the Wooden Dinosaur A-Z Puzzle!

The puzzle came with a nice wooden tray, great for storing the pieces in when the puzzle if finished or still in pieces (though I wish the tray had a lid…). One side of the puzzle has capital letters the other side has lowercase letters so your child has a chance to learn both, and the puzzle can be built face up, face down or standing on it’s feet.

The puzzle is well crafted and the pieces are solid and easy to put together. I was a little surprised by the difficulty of the puzzle, I thought it would be a breeze since it’s more or less alphabetized, but I think I relied on the alphabet a little too much and it took me a try or two to piece the thing back together. I thought it was surprisingly fun to piece together and I really love how big the pieces are the 3D feel of the puzzle.

Dimitri LOVED that this was a dinosaur! But…, I think I might have been jumping the gun with his ability level. While he wasn’t able to build the puzzle, but he did get a good chance to work on his fine motor skills as I helped him piece little bits of it together and he had a blast identifying the different letters on the pieces and sorting the colored shapes into piles. And the great thing about puzzle is, it’s wood, it’s not going to fade or break and we can play with it all over again when he’s ready to start piecing the whole thing together.

Your child might not be as into dinosaurs at mine, but no worries. BeginAgain has a bunch of different puzzles with varying degrees of difficulty. They have a butterfly that is suggested for 5+, a food assortment puzzle (Alphabites) that is suggest for 3+, and adorable wooden block puzzles for 18+ months. The Alphabites Puzzle, has pieces shaped like a bunch of food, and when all the pieces are removed from the tray, the tray is shaped like a serving tray, complete with plate and napkin and the flip side of the tray is shaved like a stove top! It sounds like some fantastic, dual use play food to me.

I’m telling you, these are worth checking out! See more BeginAgain Toys on:

We Miss Gran & Boompa Already!
Banjo had such a fun time with his grandparents and he loves them so much! See how much?  You can also see some of our cute baby gifts in the background.  We are so loved!  My parents came into town the weekend before Banjo  was born and they were such a great help to us. They were a support to us at the hospital, got us all settled back in at home and even made our neglected backyard beautiful…just to name a few!!  My dad was able to stay for a week and my mom stayed to help for an additional week and a half. She just left yesterday and ever since Banjo has been wondering where she is! We can hardly wait until June to see them again.  Isn’t family the best?  Just spending time with family.  THE best.  Thanks again Mom and Dad! Mom and Dad, thank you for planting a garden and the yard decorations and making our home that much more dandy!  We couldn’t have done it without you!!!

So sad to leave Gran at the airport!

Try the World {Review}

Back in the day, between graduating high school and graduating college I had the chance to see some incredible places – Spain, France, England, Jamaica & Namibia to name a few.  Each place I got to visit was amazing and even the European countries, that seem so close together, each had a unique culture.  Getting to step outside my everyday and experience some of these places was absolutely fantastic, and getting to relive some of those moments when I look at pictures or read my trip journals still amazes me. In fact here is a picture of me petting a Cheetah in Keetmanshoop, Namibia which is totally one of my life achievements. Another life achievement is me stepping up and eating a fried caterpillar – which our Namibian friends ate like popcorn. (Don’t worry, I’m fairly confident Try The World is not going to be sending fried caterpillars, but I’m getting ahead of myself…)

Anyway, I grew up, got married, graduated college, had a career, moved across the country, and had a baby. My options to experience some of these amazing cultures first hand have been put on the back burner for the time being, something about having a young child at home and a husband drowning in course work…

Then I saw Try The World, which is an amazing service that brings the world to you!

Try the World is a subscription service where you can get a curated box sent to your door every other month with all sorts of food from a specific country.  Great idea right?  I mean doesn’t the thought of having some of those delicious and exotic foods sent to you sounds interesting? I thought so.

When I started looking into Try the World, I was curious but also a little bit dubious…  the price tag seemed a bit high for someone in grad school ($45/box), but the concept was so interesting that I had to know more.

I was sent a Try The World sampler box to review, which is a little different than what you would get if you signed up for the service but it gives you a great idea about what it is without giving away all the fun.  What I realized is, each box is so much more than just food! I mean this box is great because they’ve got food (of course) but they’ve also got an incredible ideas for an exotic date night or girls/guys night built into the box.

Each box comes with a booklet about the country you are touring, and this book contains all sorts of goodies.  It starts with a short explanation of what a day might be like touring that specific country, for the Turkey Culture Guide it started off “Wake up to the sound of prayer accompanied by a small but intense cup of Turkish coffee, so dark and rich it leaves sediments used to tell fortunes.”  Then it walks you through what a day touring the city might be, giving you great tidbits about the culture and tourist spots that really bring it to life.

The booklet also has playlist of Turkish music (that you can find on the Trytheworld.com website) a list of Turkish movies you can look into, poems, cultural info, and recipes you can make at home of some Turkish dishes!  Honestly I think the little booklets is nearly as amazing the food, and it gives you so many options to explore the culture from your home (or to build the perfect date/girls/guys night).

Now for the food part (again I was sent a sampler box, which had a little bit of a lot of cultures).  It was such a fun surprise to be able to sample the different food.  I don’t speak french and we didn’t know what many of the items we were sent actually were, or how they were suppose to be used, but it was a blast opening each container and taking a sniff of it, or tasting a little bit of them and figuring out what the food would be best paired with.

I’m a sucker for chocolate, especially rich dark chocolate, so the cookies and the French hot coco were especially divine!

In short, I’m sold.  And if you are looking for a great way to spice up date night, experience something new, or travel without leaving your home you’ve got to check out Try The World.  For 30% off your subscription use code: DANDY30 durning check out.

Introducing Baby Banjo!!!

He is finally here!  Banjo was born on April 14th at 5:32 pm.

 His first baby pictures:
For a 37-weeker he was a BIG baby! Our little heavy weight weighed in at 8 lbs. 3 oz. and was 20 and 3/4 inches long!

What a proud Papa!

Of course my Audi had to get a picture of the hearing screening being done…by someone else!  Now why should insurance have to pay for something that daddy could have done himself???  It’s only a matter of time before Banjo makes the trip to the office and just for kicks gets a full work up done by his daddy. Guess that will be their male bonding time!
I’m awake!
I’m asleep!

I’m really awake!
****************
Well, that was a fun little jog down memory lane!  I really need to get some of those picture developed.  Why is it so hard to get photo prints taken care of?  Shouldn’t it be so much easier?  It really should!  These are memories, people!  🙂   Perhaps I should make a photo calendar.  That would be a perfectly effective and dandy way to use all of our pictures from the past.  Otherwise they will never be seen.  So many pictures.  So little time.  I must make a habit of actually doing things with the pictures.  Like for instance…  My phone… It contains hundreds and hundreds of pictures.  iPhone pictures that will never be seen unless I get them printed.  Time to print them!
*****
Stay tuned for more posts from the past.  A glimpse into my life before the Dandy.  🙂

Soybu {Giveaway} Closed

First of all I just have to say how excited I am for this giveaway! I know I usually wait until the end of the post to talk about how exciting it is to have a chance to do a giveaway but I just can’t wait! I have been MIA lately because it has been super crazy in my little family’s life. We accepted a job offer a couple hours away from our home, packed our house, put it on the market, moved, and very nearly had a melt down when I couldn’t get a box open all in about 3 weeks. It’s been crazy! But today when I put these clothes on and got ready for a photo shoot, I felt at ease and just so comfortable. Do you own any clothes that make you feel that way? Better yet, do you own work out clothes that make you feel that way? That is exactly what Soybu is all about!

logo-soybu

I got the opportunity to try out three pieces from their fall line. The colors and patterns are amazing! The first piece is called the Soybu Flex Tank in Orchard (it really makes me want to go apple picking). It’s a totally cute tank top.

IMG_5439

One thing I love about Soybu is how much cover it gives me. Maybe I’ve never invested in a really great sports bra, but I always seem to have trouble with the sides not giving me enough support. This is not the case with Soybu, the built in sports bra is wide and provides a lot of coverage and support.

IMG_5443

Which for me that means I can wrangle my little boys without having to worry about any sort of a wardrobe malfunction. Let’s be honest, whether you are working out, cleaning, cooking or taking giveaway pictures, children (the pet variety as well) always seem to find their way under our feet!

IMG_5456

I was so thrilled to try their Allegro Leggings in Fresco. The pattern is fantastic! It reminds me of a stained glass window. What do you think? The fabric is thick enough for the cooler weather but it breathes too.

IMG_5446

The waist band is wide enough so it doesn’t cut in and give me that all so attractive muffin top. I’m trying to figure out how to work them into a totally cute date night outfit!

IMG_5462

With the cooler months finally upon us I’m always looking for a way to cozy up in the brisk air. When it comes to active wear I usually think of your run of the mill zip up. Those are totally nice to have around when you need to layer, but what if you’re morning routine isn’t going to have you sweating and you need something a little more on the warm side? When I saw the Rhonda Sweater in Candlelight I knew it would suit my needs perfectly!

IMG_5468

It is so cozy and comfortable! I want to wear it all the time. My absolute favorite part about it is the back! I like to call it a peek-a-boo. It just seems so sneaky and cute!

IMG_5467

Now that I’ve told you about the clothes let me tell you a little more about the company. The “Everywoman” is who Soybu has in mind when they create their ultra fashionable active wear.  When they started out they wanted to create clothing that “would transition with her throughout her day… Soybu’s versatile active wear and lifestyle pieces help women exude beauty, strength, and balance in all they do- whether they’re enjoying a solitary moment of reflection, chasing a toddler, fitting in a hardcore workout, running to catch a flight, or meeting friends for happy hour… The company creates functional, stylish clothing so the Everywoman can get ready and stay ready all day.” I love these clothes and I really believe I could incorporate them into my everyday wardrobe. Are you sold on them?

IMG_5472

One lucky winner will win a Flex Tank! The sizes range from XS to XXL.

{The color of the tank won will depend on availability}

Well, this baby keeps a-growin’ and I keep finding myself going through my maternity box of clothes and thinking, “I wore THIS?!”  I know that the first time I was pregnant four and a half years ago, I was willing to take almost anything ‘maternity’, but I have higher standards this time around!  I’m on the hunt for cute, versatile, and comfortable classics that I’ll want to wear all 9 months, after baby, and even with the next pregnancy!  I’ve found some great maternity clothes at a site called MaternitySale.com.au, and if you’re also in the belly-growing stage of motherhood, look no further for some great finds!

logo_sm@2x

This time around, I’ve really been looking for staples, like this white shirt and jeans.  This is the Ruched White Maternity T-shirt and Straight Dusty Blue Maternity Jeans.  I was instantly pleased with this shirt from the moment I put it on.  It is not thin or transparent in the least, and I love not having to wear a cami underneath it.  The V-neck is flattering and not too low-cut, and as with any good maternity shirt, it has great length to allow for a belly of all sizes.  The side ruching is a subtle detail, but is great at showing off the bump while creating some interest visually.  The cap sleeves are comfortable, and the shirt feels very breathable, due to the 95% cotton component.  It is also available in black, charcoal, and purple-toned stripes.  This is a size 6 (AUS 10), and I think it is a perfect fit.  I’ll be wearing the heck out of this!

1

The jeans are also a favorite.  These are also a size 6 (AUS 10), and as you can see, they are a little baggy and very long, so perhaps going a size smaller would be a good recommendation.  They are still as comfortable as ever, and I love the wash.  Now, the reason I wanted these exact jeans are because they do NOT have a panel.  I’m a jeans-panel hater.  I can’t stand that huge spandex wrap that squishes all your insides even more and is supposed to keep your pants up at the same time.  No way.  Hate em.  I needed to find something under-belly with a very adjustable width, and these are just what I was hoping for.

2As you can see, there are THREE areas for adjustment that will keep these jeans close fitting, but comfortable, body hugging, and extremely adjustable.  Music to my ears!

3

Lastly, I’m excited to show you this killer Blue Striped Nursing Dress!  Yes, its true.  Its not just a maternity dress, and I’ll be wearing this throughout this pregnancy, and for much of the upcoming Spring/Summer as strictly a nursing dress!  Like I keep saying, you gotta love the versatility of these clothes.  This I ordered in a size 8 (AUS 12), and the larger size felt great.  Since it is so elastic and will shrink back to its original shape after washing, you don’t have to worry about your belly stretching it out, or the dress keeping its shape post-baby.

4

Besides being flattering, extremely comfortable, cute for Fall/Winter/Spring, and so easy to accessorize, could you even tell from the look of it that it has these ‘secret’ overlapping areas, where you can have easy access when breastfeeding?!  I’m so tickled about an outfit where I’ll be able to stay warm, concealed, and decently covered while nursing.

Buy it:

Ruched White Maternity T-shirt ($37)

Straight Dusty Blue Maternity Jeans ($73)

Blue Striped Nursing Dress ($63)

Be sure to check out their HUGE selection of adorable dresses, tops, leggings, skirts, swimwear, evening wear, nursing bras, belly bands, etc…

And now its time for that discount, as promised!  You can use the code DANDY2014 to receive a $10 discount on orders over $60.  It will expire Dec. 31st, 2014, and is one use per customer.
