Bitsy’s Brainfood {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I think we can all agree that we want to feed our kids good stuff.  Right?  But have you ever walked down the health food aisles at your local grocery store? I think it’s pretty clear that the food there is marketed to adults and in general the packaging can be on the bland side… It can be hard to convince a child that they would rather have a cereal that’s also loaded with nutrients when it’s coming from a bland blue box.

**This post contains affiliate links which support Dandy Giveaway when you purchase through them, yet don’t cost you anything extra. See Disclosure Policy for more information.**

This is where Bitsy’s Brainfood comes in.

Bisty’s Brianfood was started by two moms who wanted eating smart to also be fun. They created a bunch of snack foods that are perfect for kids. They are packed with good stuff (vitamins, Omega-3) that help support your child’s development, tasty, nutritious, and are perfect for on-the-go.

I was sent a box of “Fruit & Veggie 1, 2, 3” cereal, a box of “Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin Cookies” and a box of “Lemon Broccoli Cookies” to review.

The box of cereal is bright and fun, the back of the box is covered with games and fun facts as well as the whole inside of the box.  The cereal is shaped in numbers, and I was little apprehensive about how it would taste after it tooted it healthyness so clearly.  Eating it by the handful I think it actually taste quite good, a bit like Trix to start with but there is more of a grainy after taste, however when I added milk to it and ate it as proper cereal it tasted less sweet and more similar to cheerios.  Dimitri thought the cereal was fantastic either way and was more than happy to shove both fistfuls and spoonfuls into his mouth.

The Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin Cookies were sweet, flavorful, and hard to leave alone. The Lemon Broccoli Cookies seemed a little softer and more apt to crumbling but they were also amazing, the lemon made them tangy and I even knowing they were loaded with broccoli I couldn’t really taste it.  Both sets of cookies were shaped like alphabet letters and a lot of fun to play with before eating.

Bitsy’s Brainfood makes it clear that really want this food to appeal to kids, and through using interactive packaging, fun stickers, characters that spark little imaginations, and a kid friendly website your child might actually ask for a Lemon Broccoli Smart Cookie, instead of a chocolate chip cookie next time they’re looking for something sweet.

If you’re looking for a great alternative to the loads of unhealthy snack targeted at kids then you really need to check out Bitsy’s Brainfood.  Places to buy Bitsy’s Brainfood.

It shouldn’t come as a great surprise that I haven’t another post about something to eat when you’re trying to be healthy. I’d like to introduce you to Rabbit Creek Gourmet Food.

I was excited to try something from Donna’s line. She sent me Rabbit Creek’s Bird Seed Crunch. I was surprised to see the mix when I opened the package. It tastes fresh and I’m not baffled by what might be in it. The ingredients are pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, sugar, honey, cream and vanilla.

YumEarth Fruit Snacks {Review}

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I still remember the first time we bought fruit snacks. We were going on a road trip with our son, who was only about a year at the time, and we thought we’d get him something new and exciting to eat that would keep him happy through our long trip. Ironically enough, he didn’t like them! Of course, after repeated exposure (and seeing his friends eating the coveted snacks) he grew to love them, and now they’re like gold. Bribery with fruit snacks can get just about anything done! Sadly, fruit snacks aren’t the healthiest of all foods, so I can’t bribe with them all day long.  That is, until I found YumEarth Natural Organic Fruit Snacks.

logo

YumEarth Organics fruit snacks are better tasting and better for you than your average fruit snack.  They are vegan, contain no gluten, dairy, nuts, soy, or artificial colors and dyes, AND they’re actually made from fruit extract. So, you know, they actually taste like FRUIT. Imagine that!

package

The fruit snacks are dry to the touch instead of sticky and they have a chewy consistency, but not sticky-chewy like other snacks. They’re shaped like the fruit that they taste like, and the taste is good! Peach was my favorite, but the other flavors–Strawberry, Cherry and Banana–were also delicious. And because they’re made from fruit extracts, each package has 100% of a child’s daily recommended Vitamin C! My kids gobbled them up, and when I asked them if they tasted any different than the fruit snacks we normally buy, they said no. So, you don’t have to compromise taste and likability to give your kids a healthier option. And with so many kids today with allergens or sensitivities to certain ingredients, it’s nice to know there’s a healthier, more conscientious candy out there for everyone to enjoy! You can check the list of ingredients for each candy here.

kids

In addition to fruit snacks, YumEarth Organics  makes organic lollipops, sour beans, candy drops and gummy bears, all of which are gluten-free, dye- and artificial-color free, contain no high fructose corn syrup, and use ingredients grown on sustainable family farms. YumEarth can be purchased from their website, on other online retailers such as Amazon.com and Drugstore.com, or at local retailers such as Walgreens and Target.

BodyMedia {Giveaway}–CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Every January, I get the blues. I think it’s the post-holiday slump, coupled with “cold” weather (Southern California doesn’t really get that cold, I’ll admit) plus a few extra pounds put on from too many holiday goodies. At the beginning of this year I was really unhappy with the way I felt about my body, so I decided to make a change. I started exercising more, tracking my calories and trying to make better choices, and as a result I lost  almost 15 pounds in about 5 months. Those last few pounds are the hardest and I still fluctuate from day-to-day, but I have definitely maintained my 10 pound weight loss and am struggling to work off those last 3-5. There are many tools to help with weight loss and maintenance, but one tool that has been helpful is the BodyMedia FIT LINK Armband.

Compare

According to the BodyMedia website, “The BodyMedia system equips consumers with information they can use to make sweeping changes to their own health and wellness beginning with weight management” and “is proven to improve weight loss by 3 times versus behavioral support alone.” It also claims to be “the most accurate device in the market for measuring calorie burn.”

The BodyMedia FIT Armband is not just a pedometer, nor is it only a weight-loss tool, but it is a Fitness Tracker. It can help you set to goals to lose weight, maintain weight, or live a more active lifestyle without tracking your weight. BodyMedia’s armbands are the same bands used by the contestants on The Biggest Loser, so you know this is good technology! The armband features multiple sensors which monitor motion, steps, Galvanic skin response (how much you sweat), skin temperature and heat flux. All those sensors make it extremely reliable when it comes to an accurate count of your calories burned for the day. BodyMedia FIT makes the CORE Armband which can transmit your stats to an optional Display device, and the Wireless LINK Armband which connects to your mobile device via Bluetooth.

side by side

I was sent the LINK Armband to review.  The Armband is adjustable and straps to your arm with a velcro closure. It mostly stayed put, but would occasionally slide off during heavy physical activity or if it had gotten moved around somehow (my daughter was usually the cause of this). It’s small for a fitness tracker, but sometimes felt large and out-of-place on my arm, especially when I was dressed up at church or out with friends. But overall, it’s not bad.

me

The cool thing about the LINK is that you can download the free BodyMedia App on your smartphone and check your stats on the Activity Manager throughout the day. Definitely a cool feature, but because my phone is old and not very smart, I mostly relied on checking my stats at the end of the day, when the sensor was hooked up to the computer and was charging. I loved seeing how many calories I’d burned each day, even just from walking around. It was fascinating to see how many calories I burned on a Sunday, when all I did was walk around for a few hours, versus a Monday when I would run in the morning then go grocery shopping in the afternoon then play as a family that night. I kept it on at night so I could track my sleep, and it was really interesting to see how long it took me to fall asleep, or the times I would wake up in the middle of the night, though I had no record of being awake!  Both the CORE and LINK Armbands connect to various third-party apps for easier recording of workouts, goals and activities. Here’s what the Activity Manager page looks like:

screen

Overall, I liked the LINK Armband. It was helpful to see how hard I was working and to compare my days so I could work harder the next day. I had set a goal to lose 5 pounds in a month, and though I didn’t hit my goal, I do feel healthier and more in tune with my body. There are a ton of other cool features that I didn’t even get to use and don’t have time to mention, but it is safe to say that this Armband will help you to reach your fitness goals, whatever they may be. In order to access the online Activity Manager, you have to have a subscription, which is $6.95/month. However, a 3-month subscription is included with any purchase. The BodyMedia FIT Core Armband runs $119 and the LINK is $149, but if you buy right now, you can get 25% off! The BodyMedia FIT Armbands can be purchased online and at select retailers near you such as Target, Best Buy and Walgreens.  One lucky winner will receive a BodyMedia FIT LINK Armband for free!

Bitsy’s Brainfood {Review}

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

Oy, the battles have begun.  The bartering with my toddlers to get just one broccoli tree down their throat.  Today I even made a deal–eat three baby carrots for one cookie.  They both used to be such good veggie eaters!  I used to be able to open a can of mixed veggies, dump it in front of them, and they’d chow down.  Now “Rocket” follows me around the house saying “cake, cake, cake” and holding out cake mixes and muffin tins.

images

I am completely unashamed about my tactics to get more goodness in them.  Mix a little of this in that, dip it in ranch, throw some cheese on it, etc.  Still, it takes a concentrated effort to disguise some of the nutrients I know they need, and I wish it was easier.  I was pretty excited about these little cookies from Bitsy’s Brainfood, especially after looking at their kid-friendly website, which even has some fun printables to color.  These snacks are made from organic ingredients, and all start out with organic wheat flour.

IMG_4078

We were sent one of each of the four flavors, and they all smell great!  Bitsy has done a great job in enhancing the more preferred positive scent and masking the veggie smell.  The look and smell like fun cookies!  Naturally, we busted these open immediately and started looking for letters:

IMG_4082

Here’s what we think:

Zucchini Gingerbread Carrot: delicious, naturally.  With ingredients like that, you naturally think of carrot cake, zucchini bread, and gingerbread cookies, so you know you can’t go wrong.

Chocolate Orange Beet: practically an adult-person cookie.  I could eat these all night sitting in front of So You Think You Can Dance, and feel great about it.  A little reddish in color, but not too crazy to ward off colored-food-fearing kids.

Sweet Potato Oatmeal Raisin:  See, each one I try is a new favorite.  I think I like these the best so far because they remind me of that delicious cereal, Cracklin Oat Bran.  They seem a little more solid and crunchy, and less crumbly than the others.  Also displayed in the number of fully intact letters in the bag.  Less partials.

Lemon Broccoli:  Ok, I could probably taste the masked veggie more in this than in the other three varieties, but if you’re not thinking “broccoli”, you probably wouldn’t even notice.  My kids sure didn’t.  Look at them. Untitled-1

Here is why these are so fantastic:

  • They are an excellent source of Vitamins A, B12, B6, D3, and Folic Acid
  • They are an excellent source of Omega-3 EPA and DHA–20% of the Daily Value for a combination of EPA and DHA.
  • Good source of Calcium and Iron.  No GMOs.
  • Oven baked with real fruits and veggies!

My ONLY recommendation: maybe more vowels?  Making words gets a little tricky when we’re consanant-heavy, but it was still fun to point out letters together 🙂 IMG_4092

If you have a picker eater, a cookie-fiend, or just want to get more wholesome goodness in your kids, this Bitsy’s Brainfood is a great choice!  You can purchase them on Amazon as well as diapers.com, Abe’s Market, and freshdirect.

Conscious Box {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.
A couple weeks ago, my doorbell rang at 7am, and I ran down to find a city employee asking if I knew whose car was parked in a spot along the street, because a tree was coming down, and they didn’t want to crunch the car.  My heart sank, and I thought, “Nooooo!  These trees are the only beautiful thing we’ve got on this terribly overcrowded intercity Boston street!”  The owner moved their car, and within 5 minutes, these men who were clearly tree-chopping professionals, hacked down and chopped up a perfectly beautiful and thriving tree, threw it in a chopper, pulled out the stump and swept up the mess.  Apparently it was going to soon interfere with some phone lines, and so someone decided it needed to go, and I had to witness the deed.  It COMPLETELY ruined my day.
It surprises me more and more how much I care about the environment and the natural beauty of the earth.  Perhaps as I get older and understand the value of open space and natural earth, I’m becoming a little more eco-friendly every day.
Conscious-Box-Header
Conscious Box struck me as something I could stand behind and enjoy.  This is a monthly subscription box consisting of new, natural, and eco-friendly products!  It is exciting thinking of the variety of products it could contain–healthy food, natural beauty products, or even non-toxic home goods!  Natural and eco-friendly companies are popping up all over, and a monthly box of hand-picked items from new and trusted companies that I don’t have to hand select sounds great to me.  10-20 companies with the most ethical goals are featured every month.

Healthy Surprise {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.
Green smoothie fan?  Love that super ugly look of that super healthy meal?  Love how you know exactly what goes into it, and its kind of a surprise every time as to what this new concoction will taste like?  We are definitely a green smoothie family.  We can buy a ginormous bag of spinach at Haymarket for $3 and have smoothies every morning for a week.  “Rocket” drinks it like milk, and I love knowing that our bodies are chock full of fruits and veggies first thing in the morning, especially so that I can justify my not-so-healthy choices later on in the day.
hs-logo-no-border
I’m fairly positive that if you are a green smoothie junkie, you’re going to be all over this monthly subscription box called Healthy Surprise.  So how do you get this goodness in you?  You subscribe to a “Starter Box”, “Healthy Box”, or a “Large Box”, depending on what size you would like.  The smallest box starts at $33/month, but this includes 16-20 servings!  The Large Box runs for $99, but that is 48-60 servings, people!  The box ships the same day, and on your doorstep arrives a box of delicious, healthy snacks.  Everything included in the box is vegan, gluten-free, healthy, and delicious.  I can attest to this!  Rest assured, everything has been carefully selected by this criteria, and you won’t be disappointed in the great snacks.  No MSG, no corn, no soy, no gluten, no egg, no shellfish, etc., just good and healthy!
IMG_3445
My first impression when I opened the box was that there was SO much food in there!  Of all the monthly subscription boxes I’ve reviewed, Healthy Surprise has the most food, by far.  These aren’t just tiny sample size portions with a lot of wrapper.  These are substantial, practically full-meal sizes.
IMG_3447
I dug right in and starting enjoying some things I’ve never seen before.  Among the goodies this month were: Beanitos black bean chips, Enjoy Life seed and fruit mix, fruit.0 organic fruit snack, Hail Merry almonds, Hail Merry choco macaroons, Homefree chocolate chip cookies (my boys loved them), a Gopal’s power wrap, a Gopal’s brownie, a Cocomo Joe Green Joebar, a Chi Bar cocoa cherry energy bar, and three Righteouslky Raw chocolates in pure dark, divine mint, and synergy spice.  Yum!
The first thing I consumed was this amazing kale granola (excuse me, “greenola”) which was practically two whole meals of goodness.  And so filling!  Plain, with milk, or on top of yogurt, I was so impressed with how delicious kale can taste.  My thoughts on the Mexican power wraps: wow, holy flavor!  I can’t say I’ve tried or seen anything quite like it.  The choco macaroons were my favorite!  They are slightly dehydrated and such a yummy treat, even if they do look like packed dirt clumps.
 IMG_3449
See, everything included kind of had a different look to it, but everything tasted fantastic!!  Just like green smoothies–don’t let the appearance bother you, and you’ll introduce your taste buds to some fantastic flavors, and have the assurance that what you’re eating is healthy healthy healthy!
How fun to have so many surprises in one product!  It is a surprise as to when your box will show up, its a surprise as to what will be inside, but even more, it will surprise you how much you will enjoy these truly healthy and new, exciting products!  If you have resolved to eat better and live a healthier lifestyle, try these boxes from Healthy Surprise!  I, for one, would love to see what is in store for next month’s box!

YOU might be the lucky winner to find out!  One reader will win a starter box from Healthy Surprise!  ($33 value)  And they ship internationally!

Sometimes you win and sometimes you gain…

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I’ve been silent for over a week, because I didn’t lose.  I gained.  A LOT.  Okay not  really a lot.  Just a couple of pounds.  But it was enough to make me discouraged.  Majorly discouraged!  Remember I had a problem a couple of weeks back with being introduced to Nutella?  It’s evil.  What was the culprit this time???  Sadly there was more than one:

818CCDScfDL._SL1500_

donuts

Sickening, isn’t it?  Of course I didn’t indulge in the mini bag of the mini eggs.  No siree.  I got the BIG ‘ole family bag.  I do have a family, so it was easy to rationalize getting that size of bag.  Only… My family may or may not have eaten the majority of the bag.  Okay.  They did not.  I ate them.  I munch.  I binged.  I lost complete control!  And the donuts.  Don’t even get me started on the donuts…

But those mini eggs.  Back to those glorious mini eggs.  They were just so good that they called out to me at the store this very morning.  They weren’t even in the spot they were in last week.  They had moved to the interior of the store with all the other Easter merchandise.  But they were able to call me I tell you!  They said, “Tara, we are over in aisle 5.  Come find us now!”  Oh and I did not resist.  I found them and I bought 2 bags.  I failed.

Someone please help me!  I’m in need of a major intervention.  Now before all hope is lost I think I may have found a solution.  Or rather it found me.  Just last week I was offered a position to do some social media consulting for Revolt.  What is it?  Well, it’s this amazing new fitness plan developed by Nichole Huntsman.  Great meal plans.  Quick workout videos.  All things I can do right from my own home!  It’s proven to transform your body in as little as 6 weeks.  I need that kind of transformation!  Do you?  Part of my job as their social media consultant is working with the bloggers.  So…  If you are a blogger and you are interested in trying out Revolt and blogging about it then give me a holler.  🙂   You can email me at dandygiveaway at gmail dot com   and I’ll give you all the details.

REDSHIP Care Packages {Giveaway} – CLOSED

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I really love any holiday for lots of different reasons, but I especially love that my mom and my mother-in-law usually send out a cute little package for our family filled with treats, stickers, games, you name it!  The actual package itself is always fun, but it’s the thought and the sentiment that usually touches me the most.

That being said, I know as one who has put together a number of care packages that they can sometimes be a bear to finally get in the mail.  Figuring out what to send, how to send it, how much to shove in, and then the anxiety of waiting to find how much it will cost to send makes me really hope that the sentiment is later appreciated by the receiver!

REDSHIP Care Packages are the perfect solution for these dilemmas!  Each care package is already ready to go with snacks and a complete Chinese dinner (ceramic bowl, chopsticks, Ramen noodles, and fortune cookies) and are packed in a laundry bag inside a big red tube.  What a fun package for anyone to receive!

These packages are “uniquely designed for a college student, boarding school student, summer camper, and anyone you want to make smile. Our care packages have a universal appeal making it easy to send for a variety of reasons to a variety of recipients.”  As a military spouse and a sister/cousin/granddaughter of those serving missions, I could also easily see REDSHIP Care Packages sent to military members on training or deployment and also for missionaries on special occasions.

To give a personal touch, though, each REDSHIP Care Package also includes a personalized card with a pick-me-up or good luck wishes.

REDSHIP Care Package sent us the Healthy Care Package option, and we loved it from the moment it arrived in all its cylindrical glory!  I love grabbing a couple of packages of snacks to throw in my purse as I run out the door for a playdate, and we were shocked to see how much could fit in the tube.  I would highly recommend REDSHIP Care Packages for anyone!

Getting Healthy Week 3: ONE pound!

Disclosure: This could be a sponsored post or contain affiliate links (which means I earn a percentage of the sale), but all opinions are strictly my own.

I never thought in all my life that I would be so excited over one pound.  It was a tough week and took a lot to get there.  Well, that’s not exactly true.  The week started off fabulously.  I stayed right on track, worked out, and ate super healthy  snacks.  This is by far my favorite:

481482_10151502094384813_2066396505_n

I could eat apples and peanut butter all day long and be quite content.  Soooo yummy!

Most of the week I was feeling pretty amazing.  In fact by Friday I was down FIVE pounds.  That’s right, FIVE pounds!  It might have been a lot of water weight (okay it was water weight), but it was FIVE pounds!!!

Then Friday evening came with dinner *insert horror film music* at this place:

Maggianos_logo

I had never before been to that restaurant (probably a good thing since I obviously can’t control myself when it comes to pasta) and it is dangerous…Let.  Me.  Tell.  You.

I entered thinking I would be totally good and just eat part of my eggplant parmesan.  Then they sabotaged me with bread and appetizers.  I was hooked.  That portion control of my meal?  Did.  Not.  Happen.  Plus, they are tricky tricksters.  When you order one of their classic dishes (i.e. my eggplant parmesan) they let you pick an extra classic pasta to take home with you!  How can anyone refuse free food?  Why is that tricky?  Well, here’s my logic:  You go home with that “free” meal.  You eat that “free” meal the next day, because it tastes so amazing and the guilt of it going bad is too much.  You gain weight from the 2 days of calorie rich pasta in a row.  You then feel bad from your mistake, but are now addicted to that particular restaurant.  You feed the addiction the next week by returning to said restaurant.  You get sent home with the “free” classic pasta.  And the vicious cycle goes on and on and on.

Well, this week I’m breaking free from the cycle.  I will not be returning to the above restaurant any time soon.  At least until I’m able to control myself.  😉   This week I’m going to work really hard at eating healthy (the entire week) and working out.  Plus, I’m looking forward to starting on this new fitness plan.  Stay tuned…
